Psalm 85:12 CALLED BY GOD Today s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the Lord to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God destined us for adoption (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God s living word. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the time of the Reformation, although England broke away from papal authority under Henry VIII, a silent majority clung to the Catholic faith. Henry s eldest daughter, Mary, restored the old religion in a fierce persecution of Protestants (she is called Bloody Mary for good reason.) His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, rejected papal ties. Under her reign, beginning with legislation in 1593, Catholics were persecuted again, and only the very wealthy could afford the fines for not attending Anglican services on Sunday. They were called recusants, from a Latin word meaning refuse, since they refused to attend the liturgy of the Church of England. Many families maintained Catholic tradition in secret, and today their descendants claim Recusancy as a mark of family pride. For generations they sent their young people abroad to be educated in convents and monasteries. It is not surprising that the first monastery in colonial America springs from Holland with the daughters of patrician English recusant families. Port Tobacco, Maryland, proved fruitful soil for the Carmelite tradition.

Dennis We are all created in the image and likeness of God and we are chosen by God to fulfill the purpose of the "One who accomplishes all things." We are sent as missionaries and prophets to preach the good news by the witness of our lives. The path will not always be straight, nor will the message always be heard or welcome. But the Lord promises that as we go forth into the world, his grace is sufficient to do the work of disciples hip: to preach and to heal those we encounter. As you can see, this journey, like any journey is made up of STEPS. It's not perfection, its not sainthood or sanctity, its following the Lord step by step...a little bit more today than yesterday -A little bit more tomorrow than today. And in this process, our life is simply more successful. Think about each of the letters in the words STEPS; they will show you how to be a true disciple of the Lord. Read the bulletin next week to find out if you were correct. Remember, don't worry so much, and know that you are loved! Have ablest third week of July, Fr. May Dale rest easy with all the saints and angels in heaven.

3 IT S NOT TOO EARLY! Has someone in your family or a friend said to you they were interested in learning about or joining the Catholic Church? Even though the summer has just begun, it's not too early to let us know that someone has expressed interest. We will begin our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult sessions in September. Please spread the word throughout our parish partnership! Give Fr. Dennis a call at St. John's Thank You! The Prayer chain is in place. If you know of someone who is in need of emergency prayers please call Jeanelle or the ON THE LIGHTER SIDE After getting a traffic ticket, Sarah found herself in court. The judge asked what she did for a living. She replied, I'm a teacher at the Catholic School. "In that case" said the judge, "I have the perfect punishment, one I've been waiting to give since I went to Catholic school. Sit down at that table and write 'I will never run a stop sign again'- 200 times. When you finish you can go home." Sarah laughed and said, "And I suppose you expect me to use the Palmer method for my handwriting!" THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish. RESPECT LIFE CORNER Love is Our Life Mission The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring comfort to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captive. God s love is our life mission. If we choose to embrace this mission, we will have a new perspective on many issues. This may also mean that we will sometimes live as minorities, with different values from our surrounding secular culture. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: If we understand that love is our mission then we have learned a basic truth that will shape many other areas of life. Pray for the ability to see clearly the path to take when situations arise that are contrary to our beliefs as Catholics. DIOCESAN HAPPENINGS: INITIAL CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING Anyone interested in helping with any of our children s programs must take an initial child protection class. These are offered at varies dates & locations throughout our diocese. Oh yeah, and they are FREE. This information can be found on the calendar on left side of the front page. If you are not tech savvy call the rectory and Jill can help you find a date and location that works for you.

The Picnic Committee, Finance Council, Parish Council, Trustees, and Msgr. Dennis, listened to the request from the chairpersons and majority of workers. Together they unanimously approved a change of the date to the First Saturday in August starting With the 2019 change we hope this will offset the busy schedules involved with the Monroe County fair and other activities that fall that week/weekend. In response to the change we hope this will fill some of the gaps we have for young workers the week prior, the day of and following day. Along with the parishioner support we hope to see more attendees and an increase in revenues as well. Appropriate means of advertising are in place to announce publicly the change at this year s picnic. There will be no advertising of the change until that day to prevent confusion. The members of all councils and committees thank you for your support and understanding that will be needed to make the change a success. This decision was not made hastily or without support from all of the members in the approval process. We believe while it is a break from tradition it is in the best interest of our picnic staying successful. TRI-CENTENNIAL PLANS As many of you know our 300 th anniversary is fast approaching.
