1 November 2017 Gospel Music Fundriaser Join us at First United Methodist for An Evening of Gospel Music For the Soul presented by the FunCity Chorus! The concert will be on Saturday, November 4 at 6:00 pm in the Christian Life Center. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. You are invited to come early at 5:30 pm to enjoy refreshments. All proceeds will go towards restoring the historic John L. Webb House on 403 Pleasant Street in Hot Springs. John Lee Webb was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1877 during the first year of segregation. He was born with a stutter, which he never allowed to stop him from becoming one of the most prolific speakers of all time. He picked cotton and waited tables to attend Tuskegee Institute. He was spoken highly of by Mrs. Booker T. Washington as a man of great accomplishment who had foresight, integrity and excellence in character. Mr. Webb moved to Hot Springs with his family in 1919 and was the contractor for the five-story Woodmen of the Union Building, later known as the National Baptist Hotel. Mr. Webb died in The John L. Webb House is owned by P.H.O.E.B.E. (People Helping Other Excel by Example), a nonprofit organization dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of African American culture in Hot Springs. P.H.O.E.B.E. hopes to preserve, protect and promote the John L. Webb House, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in For more information on the concert and the John L. Webb House, please contact Cheryl Batts at First United Methodist is partnering with the Congregation House of Israel, Cooperative Christian Ministries, and The Rosenzweig Fund for Interfaith Activities to host a concert by Jewish Americana musician, Joe Buchanan. 5 A Night In Bethlehem I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:10-11 And the good news is too important to keep silent! So we are spreading it throughout Hot Springs with A Night in Bethlehem on Sunday, December 10 from 4:00-6:00 pm. Throughout our church buildings and grounds, craftsmen and women from Bethlehem (including a live nativity at the stable) will instruct visitors in their trade and tell them the good news that Jesus has come! For dinner, we will be encouraging everyone to bring a pot of stone soup (no stone necessary). We are also asking our congregation to bring bags of beans to the welcome center during the month of November, so that children can compile a bag of their own stone bean soup that night. The story of stone soup tells of how one community came together to feast in generosity even though they thought they had nothing to give. A visiting monk encouraged them to join him in his stone soup and each one contributed a small item that gave way to a majestic soup! They thought it was the Monk s stone, but we know it was the community and their contributions that made the soup so great. During this time of Christmas, it is this generosity of Jesus grace and love that we want to share with our community. Outreach Ministry Candy Poirier cpoirier@fumchs.com ext 117 Dinner & A Movie Join us on Thursday, November 16 at 4:30 pm in the Christian Life Center for an evening of fun and fellowship! We will be watching Christmas Angel. Ashley has been on her own all her life. She feels even more alone this Christmas as she searches fruitlessly for a job. Her neighbor, Nick, offers her a job, to be his assistant in the best work-helping others. There s one catch: Ashley she can t tell anyone that her new boss is a sort of Secret Santa, helping others anonymously. Coat Drive We are gathering adult and children s coats that are clean and in good condition for the winter at the Open Arms Food Pantry. If you have any coats you are willing to depart from, bring them to the Christian Life Center. We will be collecting October, November and through December 15. Call Candy Poirier at (501) ext. 117 to RSVP. Cost for the meal is $5. United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) 11 volunteers just returned from Baldwin, LA working at UMCOR for the week. Jerry Bush, Byron Jackson, Bill McCoy, Anna Sue McCoy, Pam Herrington, Helen Griffith, Betty Jo Cochran, Marsha Rogers, Gail Elsea, Nitalynn Sigman and Candy Poirier put in a full week of verifying flood buckets and loading 2 shipping containers of health kits, layette kits and flood buckets for the Ukraine. We met fellow Methodists working there from Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and Virginia all there for the same purpose. Next year s date is October 14-19, If you are interested in going call Candy Poirier at (501) ext. 117 to be put on the list. We fill up fast! 5

(It costs approximately $12.00 to provide a family with groceries and we allow a family to come once every five weeks. We needed just under 30,000 last year to provide meals for over 2500 families). Come join us as we gather with our church and community to give thanks for God s blessings and extend those blessings to our community. Congregational Care We have trained Congregational Care Volunteers who visit in the Hospital, Nursing Home and those who are Homebound. To register and learn more, call (501) or visit uamscaregiving.org. How Will You Help? Have you ever wondered how you could create a change in a person s heart and mind, and positively affect their life? We are all capable of being a very active and important part of something that does just that. But how do you and I fit into that equation? It s not simply by attending church on Sunday mornings. Although that is very important, God expects more from us. It isn t about what the church can do for you and me. We are the church and it is about what we can do to make God s plan happen. Do you love children? We have a wonderful children s ministry that is critical to the growth of our church. Volunteer to teach a Sunday school class or help with a special children s event. Does the over 65 crowd touch your heart? Volunteer to read to seniors, drive the homebound to church, or just sit with them and share a good laugh. Is mission work your passion? Go on our annual mission trip to Rio Bravo, Mexico to build houses and provide medical care to those in need. If you prefer to do your mission work in Hot Springs, volunteer to help at the weekly Open Arms Food Pantry at our church. Visit UMCOR to help put together flood buckets for victims of natural disasters. And Caring Place is always in need of volunteers to work with their participants who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer s. God left the care and responsibility of the church to us. The Stewardship 2018 campaign is the perfect time to step up to take care of it! How will you put your talents to work in the church? 7

8 Child Development Center LesLee Jones CDC Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser The 2017 CDC Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser was a great success in many ways. Approximately 145 people enjoyed a delicious breakfast that featured flapjacks made from scratch (that means the cooks didn t start with a mix). Church members bought and donated tickets and many attended the event, visiting with each other long after their plates were empty. Five participants in the Getting Ahead Program sponsored by our church attended the breakfast, three bringing with them a total of ten children. Leaders in the program and other church members visited with the guests, making them feel welcome. More tickets were sold, more people attended, and the proceeds of over $1,900 were greater than any of the previous years. That amount will go toward the purchase of a storage building for the CDC playground equipment. Thank you First United Methodist Church for your generosity and your hospitality! AECA Conference CDC staff members attended the Arkansas Early Childhood Association (AECA) Conference in Little Rock on Friday, October 13. At the Conference they attended workshop sessions, heard a nationally recognized speaker, visited both commercial and educational exhibits and networked with other early childhood professions from across Arkansas. They returned with renewed energy and new ideas for supporting the development and education of children enrolled in the CDC. CDC Director LesLee Jones serves on the AECA Board and was involved in setting up for the Conference and for overseeing the silent auction which raises funds to provide scholarships for AECA members to attend the annual conference of the Southern Early Childhood Association (SECA). In 2015, two CDC staff members, Shannon Jones and Sherry Lunsford, received scholarships to attend the SECA conference in Tulsa.
