It s amazing, and a little disconcerting, to think how fast time goes by. The whirlwind of the last couple of months has included a lot of activity at the church, too. New projects being started; old ones being completed; and progress being made at every turn. One of the most apparent changes lately has been on the former Howard Johnson Hotel lot. Phase 1 of the improvement/ beautification process is well underway and the results are incredible. It s exciting to see the transformation and know that more is to come. Our own Mildred Smith, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, has been a long time supporter of the acquisition and improvement of this property. We are so pleased her vision is beginning to come to fruition. Donations are currently being accepted in her honor that will go toward this huge landscaping project. If you would like to donate, please be sure to include In honor of Mildred Smith in the memo line of your check. Enjoy your spring and if you figure out how to slow down time, let me know! Outreach Ministry Candy Poirier cpoirier@fumchs.com ext 117 Dinner & A Movie Join us in the Christian Life Center for Dinner & A Movie on Thursday, March 15 at 4:30 pm. Our movie this month, August Rush, tells of a young boy named August Rush who is drawn to music so that it takes him to New York City, penniless and alone, in a quest to find - somehow, someway - the parents separated from him years earlier. Along the way he also finds the musical genius hidden within him. Call Candy Poirier at (501) to RSVP. Cost for the dinner, movie, and popcorn is $5. Road Trip: Lunch at Marlsgate Plantation Let s take a day trip to Scott, Arkansas! On Friday, April 6, we ll go back in time at Marlsgate Mansion to have lunch and tour the gardens. Marlsgate s rooms, furniture, and paintings illuminate the rich historical and cultural heritage of the American South, the habits and traditions of its people, and the triumphs and tragedies of its past. If you have never visited, it s definitely a treat! We will leave the church from the Christian Life Center at 9:30 am and should return by 3:00-4:00 pm. The cost is $50 for lunch and the tour. Call Candy Poirier at (501) ext. 117 to RSVP. Valentine s Cards Update A big thank you all that made Valentine s cards for the youth to share with our nursing home friends! The youth handed out the cards and visited with the residents at Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Home and they were enjoyed by all. They all were so welcoming and so wonderful to see the smiles on their faces. 5 5 UMW s Cookies On A Mission The United Methodist Women are gearing up for their first bake sale of 2018! The next Cookies on a Mission, the UMW s fundraiser to support missions, is scheduled for Sunday, March 11. Cookies will be on sale in the breezeway and in the Christian Life Center during the following times: 9:15-9:45 am 10:15-10:45 am After all 3 services Purchase a bag of three home-baked cookies for $1.00, or a dozen home-baked cookies for $4.00. Please bring your cash to support UMW Missions! Successful Men s Summit! The men of First United Methodist Church were thoroughly entertained and inspired by the principal speaker, Walt Coleman, at the 2018 Men s Summit! This was the eighth consecutive year for the men to come together for fun, food, fellowship and spiritual renewal. Coleman, a native of Little Rock, has been an official in the National Football League since 1989 and is looking forward to beginning his 30th year in that role. He had stories of his experiences as a football official, and asked the audience to give him a loud BOO as he began his speech to make him feel at home around sports fans. He ended the speech by receiving a loud ovation of thanks from the attendees as they were thoroughly entertained by his many stories and experiences as a NFL Official. Included in his talk were words of encouragement for work with youth and for always remembering that EVERY person is important and everyone can make a contribution to making this a better world. He ended his talk with a question/answer session that let all the attendees get involved in the program. Bart Bledsoe, chairman for the Men s Annual Summit, reminded everyone of the many opportunities for men to get involved in activities at First United Methodist Church. The 2018 Summit was dedicated to the late John Miles, who was a regular attendee at past Summits and who had a long and active career in Methodist ministry in Arkansas. The planning committee called on Pastor David Moseley for comments about and a special tribute to Rev. Miles. A delicious home-made spaghetti and meatball dinner, with all the trimmings, was prepared for the men by Jen Bledsoe. She is known for this special dish which came from her Italian grandmothers secret recipe. Entertainment was provided by The ConneXion Praise Team under the direction of longtime FUMC member Lauren English Britton. Lauren, her mother Cindy, and all the members of the band added a wonderful time of worhsip with their special music presentations. FUMC Pastor Emeritus David Wilson closed this annual meeting with prayer. The men of FUMC express their appreciation to Walt Coleman and the many volunteers who made this eighth annual program possible. Now, the men are back to work planning for the 2019 Annual Men s Summit.

6 Child Development Center LesLee Jones This is the second in a series of Did You Know? articles leading up to the CDC S 50th Anniversary Celebration to take place in September DID YOU KNOW that when the CDC opened in 1997, it began serving children from six weeks to five years of age? Factors such as changes in public school education, in family economics, in the increased number of infants and toddlers in group care, and increased space in the Christian Life Center influenced the decision to change the focus and name of the program. When public school kindergartens became a reality, some children who previously attended faith-based kindergartens such as First United Methodist were now attending the public programs. In many families both parents were working, thus increasing the need for full-time child care, including care for infants and toddlers. The name of the program was changed to First United Methodist Church Child Development Center to more accurately reflect the children and families served and the program s goal of providing both care and education for each child. As you will see in future DID YOU KNOW? articles, the CDC has continued to evolve to meet the needs of families in the community.
