1 January is Exciting! REV. MICHAEL MATTOX January 2016 It s not just the new year that makes the month of January exciting it s actually a month-long calendar of events and activities that make me proud to be a United Methodist and here s why! Ever since I met him, I ve been eager to invite the senior pastor of Historic Visitors Chapel AME Church to preach here in our historic church. Having mutual friends in the state in years past, I already feel a bond with him beyond that bond of Methodist roots which we share. Rev. Gregory C. Nettles is a native of Camden, Arkansas, and has been in the ministry since He is a graduate of the Northeast Louisiana University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas. Rev. Nettles attended The Rhema Bible Training Institute in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and has served various appointments in Arkansas and Oklahoma, including the Allen Temple AME Church, Pine Bluff; St. John AME Church, Fordyce, and the Pilgrim Rest AME Church, Monticello before coming to serve the Historic Visitors Chapel AME Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In 2014, Pastor Greg enrolled in the Novel Preaching Program at SMU (Southern Methodist University) in Dallas, Texas under the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Alyce McKenzie, Professor of Preaching, where he studies with 10 other United Methodist preachers and one Presbyterian preacher in the Central Arkansas Area. This Lilly Foundation funded program is the same program our own Pastor Zach Roberts graduated from last year. As a minister in the 12th Episcopal District of the AME Church, Pastor Nettles serves on various boards and alliances, including the Salvation Army Board, S.E.A.R.K. Concert & Fine Arts Organization Board, and the Habitat for Humanity Board. Rev. Nettles is married to Gladys Nettles, and they have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Mrs. Nettles is the Deputy Appraiser for Ouachita County Assessor, in Camden, Arkansas. I m excited to preach there in his church at the end of the month. As well, anyone who knows me knows I love and support the organization called United Methodist Women! My own spouse has been the Conference President of UMW as well as numerous other conference responsibilities. Presently, she serves as the President of the South Central District UMW, so you would expect that I d welcome UMW Sunday, and I do! Our wonderful Unit President, Ann Lowerre has a powerful guest speaker coming for our local observation of UMW Sunday on January 24, 2016 with Sarah Wacaster, Director of Camp Aldersgate, a nationally known entity owned by UMW, coming to bring a word of greeting and challenge to all of us in all three Sunday services on that day. Please send your child to Sunday school each week with an offering. What a wonderful habit to establish at a young age! FUMCHS Kidz Sunday School (1st - 5th grade) As we set our New Year s resolutions, shouldn t we make the one at the top of the list be to slow down and spend more time with God? By doing so, we set the example for our children to follow. We all want our children to read and hear the Bible stories that have touched and inspired our hearts over the years. So let s make a New Year s resolution to come as a family to Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. each week in January! Your children will hear stories from the Bible that teach the importance of self-control and you will have options for classes on parenting, women s Bible studies and more! FUMCHS Kidz Sunday School (Nursery, Toddlers, Pre-K & Kindergarten) Each week in January, we will tell a story about something ONLY JESUS can do! By telling these stories, we are sharing with our youngest friends the awesome power of Jesus and that He can do anything. In fact, there are many things only Jesus can do! 4 The Messenger

6 Discipleship Ministries REV. TERESA HOLT Be involved this winter at First United Methodist of Hot Springs! We are offering a variety of small groups and Bible studies for adults, including studies specifically for women and families. To Sign up for any of these classes, contact the Discipleship Office at tholt@fumchs.com or (501) , ext 116. Register online at Disciple Bible Study (Fast Track Version) - Over 400 members of our church have participated in a Disciple Bible Study over the past 15 years. Disciple Fast Track maintains the integrity and principles of the original study, but its modifications can better meet the needs of a hectic world. Participants still receive a thorough introduction to the Bible, but in almost a third less time. Each session is 75 minutes and the course is 24 weeks. Janet & Jim Tarkington, facilitators. Dates: Sundays, January 3rd - end of June, 2016 Time: 5:00-6:30 p.m. Where: Christian Life Center room 203 Henri Nouwen s Spiritual Formation - Spiritual Formation Groups are an opportunity to practice and grow deeper in your relationship with God through a very small group with personal sharing and individual and corporate practice. Contemplative (quiet) prayer and ancient practices will be the focus of the 7 weeks. The groups are limited to 6-8 participants per group. Teresa Holt, facilitator. Dates: Wednesdays, January 6 - February 24 Time: 11:45-12:45 a.m. Where: Christian Life Center room 204 Power of a Focused Heart (Women s Study) - Looking to simplify your life? Quiet your mind? Find your unique spiritual gift(s) and make a difference? Turn to the Beatitudes! Sometimes teachings from well-known biblical passages are so obvious and preached so often that we overlook other helpful, not-so-obvious lessons. The Beatitudes are celebrated as being the template for humble Christian living. Dig deeper and you ll also find practical applications for living a simpler yet more spiritually engaged life, especially in this distraction-heavy and frenzied world. Julie Holt, facilitator. Dates: Thursdays, January 21st - March 17th Time: 9:00 a.m. Where: Christian Life Center room 201. The Holy Spirit - Who is the Holy Spirit and what does he do? In this study, Billy Graham offers a sensitive and comprehensive portrait of the much discussed but often-misunderstood member of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit came to empower God s people and transform their lives, yet so often the doctrine of the Holy Spirit causes division in the church. It is crucial to develop a genuinely biblical understand of the Third Person of the Trinity - and to experience an authentic outpouring of his power. Max Wittman, facilitator. Dates: Tuesdays, February 9th - April 12 Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Where: Christian Life Center room 201 We care about Your Family! We want to help you and your children, grow in your relationship with God, develop friendships that help support you, and discover practices that help keep you family strong! This coming January 3rd at 9:30 a.m., we start the new year with Sunday School small group classes that will help strengthen the family through Christian and Biblical values. Simplfy. - Exhausted. Overwhelmed. Overscheduled. Sound familiar? Today s velocity of life can consume and control us... until our breakneck pace begins to feel normal and expected. What if your life could be different? What if you could be certain you were living the life God called you to live - and building a legacy for those you love? If you crave a simpler life anchored by the priorities that matter most, roll up your sleeves: Simplified living requires more than just cleaning out your closets or reorganizing your desk drawer. It requires uncluttering your soul. By eradicating the stuff that leaves your spirit drained, you can stop doing what doesn t matter - and start doing what does. 7 Discipleship Ministries cont. Revolutionary Parenting - How can parents make a lasting impact in the spiritual lives of their children? To find the answer, acclaimed researcher George Barna investigated the lives of thriving adult Christians and discovered the essential steps their parents took to shape their spiritual lives in childhood. He also learned surprising truths about which popular parenting tactics just aren t working. Revolutionary Parenting shows parents how to instill in their children a vibrant commitment to Christ. Where: Christian Life Center room 205 Broken and Blessed is a six-week Women s Bible study that traces the story of the Genesis family from Adam and Eve through the generations to Joseph, bringing blessing from brokenness. We will see that despite both good and bad traits that were passed down, God worked for good in every generation-determined to transform those within and outside the family bloodlines. Through Biblical teachings, and stories of contemporary families changed and used by God, this study shows us how God can use our own imperfect families to bring blessing in a hurting and broken world. Where: Christian Life Center room 105 (Parlor) Children also have the opportunity during the Sunday School hour to grow in their faith and relationships with Jesus, their family and others. Everything we teach in 252 Basics is based on one of three basic, but powerful, truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52: I need to make the wise choice, I can trust God no matter what, and I should treat others the way I want to be treated. 252 Basics focuses on: 150 Key Bible stories, 4 Faith Skills, and 30 Life Apps (practical applications of God s Truth). The Life Apps for January and February will be Self-Control and Cooperation. Where: Children meet in the lower and upper level of the Christian Life Center.
