Counting Our Blessings Cyndee Metcalf cmetcalf@fumchs.com ext 102 December 2017 General Church Operations Year-to-Date Tithes and Offerings $377, Tithes and offerings $1,800, Monthly Expenses -$184, YTD expenses -$1,727, Monthly Net Income $192, YTD net income $73, December 2017 Missions and Memorials Year-to-Date Mission Offerings $9, Mission Offerings $111, Memorial Offerings $1, Memorial Offerings $44, Mission Disbursements $7, Mission Disbursements $97, Memorial Disbursements $3, Memorial Disbursements $22, Property Loan Balance as of December 31, 2017 $1,442, Year-to-Date P / I Payments $123, Blessings certainly abounded at the end of 2017! December was our best month of the year as we received an influx of annual pledges, pre-paid 2018 pledges, and special donations to help defer the cost of new heating units and other unexpected year-end repairs. If you ve been following these monthly reports throughout the year, you know the church has been in the red for many months. With all that was received in December, we were able to end the year very strongly was a remarkable year in many ways. In January, we were able to completely pay off our Line of Credit thanks in large part to a bequest from the Cecil Cupp, Jr. estate. And, even though we replaced multiple HVAC units last year along with many other repairs, we did so completely on a cash basis and never increased our debt. For an aging campus such as this, that s quite an accomplishment! 2018 promises to hold it s own financial challenges, but strong plans are in place to make much needed repairs and improvements. Your support is crucial in maintaining not only our facilities, but our varied ministries as well. I m looking forward to a great 2018!! Thank you for all you ve done for FUMC Hot Springs and all you continue to do! Christian Sympathy goes to... In Our Prayers 2 Pam Herrington in the death of her sister, Ann Morse; Ann Lindsey in death of her mother, Molly Ilene Arnette; Betty Jo Cochran in the recent death of her mother, Virginia Holt; Larry and Judy Kauffman in the recent death of Judy s father, Billy Earl Jr.; and Timothy, Colleen, and Aiden Tucker in the death of Timothy s aunt, Wanda McGhee. Please keep these families in your prayers at this time.
3 Outreach Ministry Candy Poirier ext 117 Dinner & A Movie Join us for Dinner & A Movie on Thursday, February 22 at 4:30 pm in the Christian Life Center. We ll be watching Hidden Figures. Call Candy Poirier at (501) to RSVP. Cost for the dinner, movie and popcorn is $5. Wednesday Night Dinner Update Wednesday Night Dinner has been going great! A big thank you to all who come and fellowship over a meal every week. If we collect more money than is spent on food, the excess goes to the Open Arms Food Pantry at the end of the year. In 2017, we had $1,754 that went into our fund for the pantry. We fed 2,572 families in 2017 totaling 6,951 individuals. We couldn t have done this without you. A big thank you all for your generosity! See you on Wednesday s at 5:00 pm! Make Valentine Cards! Spread God s love for Valentine s Day this year! Make Valentine cards for those in local convalescent homes in the atrium of the Christian Life Center. All of the cards, trimmings, and glue are provided for you to use. When you re finished creating your cards, just drop them in the basket at the table. The cards will be delivered to homes on Sunday, February 11. Adult Discipleship Rev. Teresa Holt tholt@fumchs.com ext 103 Book of Joy Study - a Five Week Book Quest. Two spiritual giants. Five days. One timeless question. Wednesday, February 14 - March 14 from 4:30-5:00 pm in Christian Life Center Room 205. Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships or, as they would say, because of them they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness s eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life s inevitable suffering? This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final good-bye. We get to listen as they explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy from fear, stress, and anger to grief, illness, and death. They then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness. Throughout, they include stories, wisdom, and science. Finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. We will be incorporating Jesus teaching on what it means to be blessed, along with the sharing of these two spiritual leaders. Rev. Teresa Holt will be the book discussion facilitator. Final What if? Conference We complete our What if? Conferences on February 7 from 6:00 7:30 pm on an examination of Mentoring: seeking those who can help us live out the vision that God has for our lives and discovering those who we can encourage and resource to more fully live in God s Kingdom. If you haven t signed up for the Work as Worship Conference at First Baptist Church, on February 23, go to and register! 3
4 Children s Ministry Michelle Wilkins mwilkins@fumchs.com NEW Children s Sundays Have you noticed children serving in worship on the 2nd or 3rd Sundays of each month? We are teaching our children at a young age that serving God in worship is a major part of our calling as disciples of Christ! On the 2nd Sunday of each month in both Traditional worship services, children will be leading worship by giving the opening prayer, leading the Affirmation of Faith, reading scripture, ushering, greeting, acolyting, and giving the closing Benediction. The same will happen on the 3rd Sunday of the month in The ConneXion, service! In The ConneXion, the children will also have the opportunity to serve Communion. The more we give children in our congregation opportunities to serve at a young age, the higher the possibilities become for them to hear their calling from God on how they can serve in their adult lives. Our goal is to instill servitude in their hearts so that they can grow in their faith and become life-long disciples for Christ! How you can help: If you see a child serving, please be sure to encourage them with words of praise! If you feel led to help in this ministry, contact Michelle Wilkins at mwilkins@fumchs.com. We are looking for Children s Sunday coordinators for each of the three services to help schedule when the kids will serve and in what way. Parents: We need to build a rotation of children that like to read in the services, as well as a rotation of children that would like to be ushers, greeters, or serve communion. Contact Michelle to sign your child up! Save the Date! Spring Fling Sunday, March 25 from 4:00-6:00 pm Walk with Jesus is an interactive event for the entire church family that guides guests through Jesus last days on earth. Travel through time to Jerusalem for Palm Sunday. Sit down for the Last Supper and discover the sacrifice of Good Friday. Then celebrate freedom from sins at the empty tomb that first Easter morning. This program is designed for all ages and is a powerful way to reach our community! Discover Easter, and the events leading up to it, in a way you ll never forget! 6 Child Development Center LesLee Jones Wishing Tree On the wall just outside the doors of the children s wing is a Wishing Tree with materials that the CDC teachers wish to have in their classrooms. You are invited to take a wish from the tree and purchase the item or give LesLee Jones, CDC Director, the money to cover the cost of the item and she will order it. Your generous gift will help the CDC children Explore, Discover and Learn. CDC Celebrates its fifty-year anniversary in September Here is the first in a series of articles that highlight significant events that occurred from 1968 to Did You Know that the Child Development Center will be celebrating its fifty-year anniversary in September 2018? However, it was not always the CDC. First United Methodist Kindergarten was the forerunner of the Child Development Center. The Kindergarten opened on September 3, 1968, serving four and five year old children. Classes were held in the Education Building. Tish Fulenwider was the teacher for the five year olds and became Director of the program, which operated for twenty-nine years. Then during the first week of July 1997, the renamed Child Development Center opened in the Christian Life Center with fifty children enrolled in the summer program and 108 children registered for the fall program. So for fifty years, from 1968 to 2018, First United Methodist Church has served children and families in the Hot Springs community.
