1 July 2018 Getting Ahead Children s Ministry Our Getting Ahead Classes will start meeting this Fall on Wednesday evenings starting on August 15. These GETTING AHEAD classes are designed to teach individuals the skills and mindset to Children's Ministry develop a plan that will allow them to get out of poverty. Our church has embraced this ministry and has funded four classes over the past two years. The stories shared by our graduates are significant. We have five facilitators/facilitators in training (Elizabeth Alderman, Doug Miller, Lee Richardson, Carolyn Watts, Tracy Keaton) and they have developed a significant ministry with the assistance of mentors who continue to meet with participants after graduation. If you would like to volunteer to this ministry, we are always in need of mentors to walk alongside our community as they strive to make a better life for themselves. To support this ministry well, we must also provide education for their children. Children in grades 3rd - 6th will meet with Debbie and Walker Lloyd this fall for cooking classes. We offered these classes last fall and they were a considerable hit! These classes help children learn how to cook nutritional dinners and snacks with little expense. To assist with these classes, we are asking our congregation to help us by donating funds to supply the following: 16 $30 Walmart or Kroger gift cards for food supplies New pots and pans Seasonings Cooking utensils Electric burner plate to be stored in the upstairs mini kitchen in the Christian Life Center Monogramed aprons for each child The total cost for the class will be approximately $800. If you would like to contribute to this ministry, please make checks out to the church with a note that it is for the Getting Ahead Children s Ministry. 3 Outreach Ministry Candy Poirier ext 117 Dinner & A Movie Join us on Thursday, July 26 at 4:30 pm in the Shelton Room of the Christian Life Center for our monthly Dinner & A Movie! We will be watching I Can Only Imagine with Dennis Quaid and Trace Adkins. This is the inspiring true story behind MercyMe s hit song. Running from a troubled home life and a broken relationship, Bart Millard (J. Michael Finley) found his escape in music. Bart and his band go on an amazing journey none of them could have ever imagined. This uplifting movie illustrates the power of forgiveness and God s love. Cost for dinner, the movie, and popcorn is $5. Call Candy Poirier at (501) ext. 117 to RSVP. A Big Thank You! A big thank you to everyone who hosted OMP kids and adults in June. We couldn t have done it without you! The kids and adults enjoyed the food and meeting families in the community and all of you that kindly offered them into your homes to shower and clean up after a day of giving back to the community. First United Methodist Church, Hot Springs hospitality is a true light of building God s kingdom. Thank you all again! A Thank You From Darrow Frazier The following message was sent to us from Darrow Frazier, a missionary with Cadence International Ministry to the U.S. Military communities who is currently living in Okinawa, Japan. Our church supports Darrow every year as part of our Easter Offering. Learn more about Darrow s efforts at Dear First United Methodist Church Hot Springs, To the Pastors and Outreach Committee and congregation, Thank you so much for the continued prayers and financial support of ministry to the US military that Vicki and I were called to. This past year has allowed us to serve many meals, teach the Word and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Marines and Sailors stationed here at Camp Hansen Okinawa. We had baptisms in the Pacific Ocean, said many goodbyes and many hellos. The house has a bunch of Marines leaving and we have already seen new guys coming to find out about Christ. It is an important time of discipleship for these men and women, ages 17-22, first time from home. This being a totally singles and unaccompanied base (no families), means we are family to them. A lot of them have never been to a Bible study and those that were in church growing up have to decide if Jesus is something they were taught or is He really their Lord. We are here with them as they have that conversation with our Lord, praying with them, that He is the most important thing in their lives. We really appreciate all of you being in this with us. Love, blessings and praises Darrow and Vicki Frazier Hansen Christian Center, Okinawa Japan A Cadence Adult Ministry 3

5 Child Development Center LesLee Jones Farewell From LesLee Jones As I hold back my tears, I would like to reflect on my six years here at the Child Development Center. Between all the people I have met, the friends I have made, and the families that I have touched, I am forever grateful to God for the experience of being Director of THIS quality child care center. Thank you to all the people that supported the Child Development Center. You made my job so much easier. A special Thank You to all the CDC Board members, church staff, and especially Ms. Dot Brown. You all have taught me so much. I will forever be grateful. With Love, LesLee Jones Did You Know? that the Child Development Center is a Better Beginnings Three Star Center, which is the highest level of quality awarded in Arkansas? Better Beginnings is Arkansas Quality Rating System. The CDC is the only faith-based and nonpublicly funded program in Garland County to receive this designation of quality from the Department of Human Services Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education. This highest level of quality is awarded when a program receives required scores on four different scales that rate all facets of the program, including administrative procedures. It is also required that each classroom staff member receives at least twenty-five clock hours of professional development training each year. Share Your Artistic Gift With Us This fall, our church will explore what it means to be hospitable in a diverse community and world. The world has become polarized around economic, political, religious, and racial lines. We are uniquely qualified with the good news of Jesus Christ to share a different vision that reflects the image of God in our diversity, and we need to take this good news into our community. If you would like to help share your artistic gifts in a way that needs little words and touches the heart and longings of our church and community, contact Rev. Teresa Holt at (501) or at tholt@ arumc.org. In Our Prayers Christian Sympathy goes to... Randy and Mary Morgan in the death of Randy s mother, Hank Holderfield; Larry Pinion in the recent death of his wife, Jo Ann Pinion; and Debbie Dahl in the recent death of her father, Paul Dahl. Please keep these families in your prayers at this time. 5
6 1974 Hendrix Reunion Choir to Perform The 1974 Hendrix College Reunion Choir will sing in the traditional worship services on July 29th. This group toured Europe in June of 1974 under the direction of Robert McGill where the choir sang in cathedrals and other venues in Romania, Austria and Italy. During the tour the choir visited Florence, Venice, Vienna and other cities. The choir spent two weeks in Romania touring the country and singing. The group stayed in local homes several times and learned to appreciate the comforts of home. They then traveled on the Orient Express train from Romania to Venice, where they were stopped by border police and all were made to depart the train for a passport check. The group will be under the direction of Richard Scott and accompanied by Jess Anthony. Some of the pieces that will be performed are: Glory to the Trinity--Rachmaninoff; Deep River--arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw; O Magnum Mysterium--Tomas Luis de Victoria; Evensong--Callahan; Song of Simeon-Unfried; and the signature entrance, Once in Royal David s City.
