Canadians celebrate it on July 1 st. The French celebrate it on July 14 th. Mexicans celebrate it on September 16 th. On July 4 th we Americans join together in celebrating our Independence Day. Countries all over the world have designated special holidays where their people join together to celebrate their liberty and freedom. This goes to show that liberty, freedom, and independence are principles and virtues that are appreciated and cherished everywhere the world over. Nobody wants to be oppressed, tyrannized, or burdened. Such things are universally recognized as bad and evil. We desire the opposite. We want liberty, freedom, and independence from such torment. And so, on Independence Day we celebrate the fact that those who went before us were able to cast off the burdensome chains of such evil so that we might have things better! The Bible also speaks about the importance of having liberty, freedom, and independence. In fact, a love of these principles and virtues is why Christians believe what they do! The Christian understands that he is one who is naturally oppressed, tyrannized, and burdened. It is something that all people can feel and relate to because all people understand what guilt feels like. Consciences are heavy and troubled. We know what we have done to hurt and harm those that we should instead be loving. The burden of a heavy conscience only gets worse when Newsletter July/August 2018 Liberty, Freedom, & Independence we recognize that our own attempted solutions and our efforts to correct things only end in failure, continued distress, and despair! Where can we turn for liberty, freedom, and independence of our guilt and sin? The Christian finds relief in Him who said: Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) We find comfort in the One who proclaims: Take heart! Your sins are forgiven. (Matthew 9:2) We find liberty, freedom, and independence of our guilt and sin in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the answer to being spiritually oppressed, tyrannized, and burdened. He who came with the power of God, proving Himself to be the very Son of God, trustworthy and true, points people everywhere to Himself and says: If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed! (John 8:36) You are invited to celebrate your liberty, freedom, and independence over sin and guilt! You are invited to celebrate these things forever in a place where there will be unending happiness and joy! Jesus is providing YOU with spiritual liberty, freedom, and independence! Jesus provides us with liberty, freedom, and independence with His holy, righteous life, lived for us. Where we have sinned and feel the burden of guilt and shame, Jesus lived perfectly. There was never any burden upon Him. But He willingly took our burden upon Himself as He went to suffer and die upon the Cross. There, Jesus took the sin and guilt that should oppress, tyrannize, and Continued on page 2

burden us and He made it His own while His liberty, freedom, and independence, He gave to you and to me! By simply trusting in Jesus life, death, and resurrection, we shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) When we begin to feel oppressed, tyrannized, and burdened by our consciences, when we feel the weight of our sin and guilt, Jesus invites us again and again to come to Him. He wants us to hear His words that tell us He has set us free. And He invites us to celebrate the fact that through Him, we have spiritual liberty, freedom, and independence. - Board for Home Outreach Our Mission The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. 4 New Business Theme for the church year Mmsp to approve Now Thank We All Our God as our new theme. This theme recognizes our thanks to God for the growth of our congregation, the fact we have realized our dreams and goals, the 100 years of the ELS and preservation of God s Word and the Reformation. There will be a prayer of Thanksgiving to announce this theme at the July 1 st church service. It will be incorporated with the Prayer of the Church during the service. Electronic Sign Quote Pastor Hartwig presented a quote received from a company called Hoyco. This would be a higher quality sign, but the company would not do all the installation work. However, even with the costs of installation this would be a lower total cost than the other estimates received. This company wants to offer this at a lower cost, so they can use our sign as an example of their work to break into the sign market in this area of the country. It is estimated that our total cost would be approximately $ which if covered under the building loan would amount to an increase of about $120/month to our mortgage payments. The Council decided that more research needed to be done, contacting Hoyco for more information and checking with other sign companies. A decision on whether to recommend this was tabled for now. Long Range Planning for the Church There was considerable discussion of all the brainstorming ideas arrived at the previous day. It was decided that some of our ideas belonged to short range projects that could be handled by the respective boards. The Council voted on the following as our recommendation for the focus of the church s long-range planning with the highest priority at the top: 1.) The Church developing a plan to become Debt Free. 2.) Developing our Technology capabilities for, among other things, continuing the Peace Devotions videos and possibly developing a virtual church for those who cannot be physically present. 3.) Developing opportunities in our church for Equipping Members for Christian Living. (Using Biblical ideas for dealing with the challenges of our culture and life challenges.) 4.) Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School Tuition Assistance for members with high school students. 5.) A Summer Care Program for the community and members. It was decided that the following could be handled by the respective boards: Pastors teaching catechism at Mt. Olive Lutheran School, a Marriage Retreat, the use of I Pads for giving and volunteer sign-up, and a Golf Tournament fund raiser. Next council meeting August 14 th at 6:30pm. Motion made to adjourn with the Lord s Prayer. MMSP. Respectfully Submitted, Greg Miller Are you unable to care for your feet? Your church home is offering a service to help you care for your feet and toenails. By appointment, a registered nurse, using sanitary equipment, will soak and wash your feet, trim toenails, and finish with a lotion foot massage. If the nurse feels further medical attention is needed, she may suggest an appointment with your health care provider. This service is free; however, donations will be accepted to go to a church cause. For more information, or to set up an appointment, please call Amy Jo Reiner at To watch our services live, go to: or our Facebook page. The service will start automatically when it is live (8:30AM). For recorded services, go to: and you can choose which service you wish to watch. We are currently only streaming and recording during the 8:30 service.

An Impressive Gift In Mark chapter 12 we hear this story, Jesus sat down opposite the offering box and was watching how the crowd put money into it. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 One poor widow came and put in two small bronze coins, worth less than a penny. 43 He called his disciples together and said to them, Amen I tell you: This poor widow put more into the offering box than all the others. 44 For they all gave out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything all that she had to live on. As Jesus sat at the temple watching the people bring gifts to the Lord, many were likely impressed by the sizable gifts that some of the wealthier people brought. Perhaps some of these individuals even brought their gifts because they liked the attention of others who praised them for their generosity. However, Jesus draws his disciples attention to a woman who was overlooked, a widow who placed only two small bronze coins in the box. Though so many were impressed with the big donors, Jesus says this woman gave more. How could that be? Jesus knew the circumstances of each, he knew the wealth of the rich and the poverty of this widow, he knew she didn t just give a portion, but she gave all she had and in so doing revealed her faith. By her offering she showed her trust in the Lord. Many of the wealthy sought praise for their large donations and they had much more to take care of their needs, but this woman gave all she had. We too can have the wrong attitude when it comes to giving. Sometimes we ourselves can get so caught up with the size of the gift rather than the heart of the giver. Maybe we have had a wrong motivation in giving at times, hoping others may see and be impressed by the amount we give. Others might give nothing because they think their gift would be so small. But this is sin. We seek God s forgiveness for such attitudes. Let us also know that by his grace he does grant it in Jesus name. May God always help us to always give generously from a heart of faith, thanking Him who is our Savior from sin and trusting that He will provide for our earthly needs. Amen. Just a reminder of the option you have of using electronic giving for making your regular church offerings or special fund offerings. Contributions can be debited automatically from your checking or savings account or processed using your credit card (Peace is charged a percentage of your donation) or debit card. The electronic giving program offers convenience for you and much needed donation consistency for our congregation. If you are currently giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to write out 52 checks a year or prepare 52 envelopes. And, when travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services, this program will allow your weekly offerings to continue in an uninterrupted basis. It is now possible for you to set it up yourself by going to our website, clicking on the Give now box and putting in your information. You can choose how often you donate (weekly, monthly, certain date(s), etc.). This summer, join the M.O.M.s study group at the park! All are welcome to join us for our summer park playdates beginning Wednesday, June 7. Park playdates are come and go, from 9- noon, and you are welcome to pack a lunch and picnic if you like. Wednesday mornings in July, we will be at Sibley Park. It is a chance to get the kids out to play and the parents to connect with other Christian parents. If raining, the playdate is cancelled. We hope to see you there!

What a wonderful three days we had for VBS 2018, Divine Nature Adventure! We were blessed to have 120 children (a record high) and 38 helpers, learning about our Amazing Creator and the science behind this wonderful world we live in. Although there were many bodies at VBS this year, it didn t feel too crowded. Our new addition allowed us to spread out and have great space for all of our stations: bible lessons, music, science lab, crafts, snacks, and games! Thank you, building committee members, for your hard work! Our VBS program was even better because of the new space. Each day opened with a science experiment from Dr. Eric Woller, our resident scientist for the week, and a devotion from Pastor Hartwig. The daily themes, God Creates Me, God Changes Me, and God Sustains Me, were woven throughout the different stations each day. The children learned daily bible verses and recited them energetically with actions.

Lessons Music Crafts Science

At lunch time, everyone picnicked outside on the grass (or inside the narthex on the rainy days!). Lunch time was a great time to talk with friends, enjoy food, and play outside on the beautiful property God has given our congregation. Following lunch time, we had our Extraordinary Earth Exploration time, a chance to explore more science as a big group. Some activities we enjoyed during this time included creating liquid nitrogen ice cream, observing a thermite explosion, enjoying water games and activities, and having a visit from biologist, Chad Heins, accompanied by a spider hunt on the church grounds. Science has never been so fun and exciting! Our VBS concluded with the Wednesday evening worship service on June 13. Pastor Moldstad gave three devotions on our daily VBS themes, and the children sang songs and recited their bible passages during the service. Following the service, we enjoyed a video presentation of our VBS week. This 2018 VBS Highlights Video is on the church website and facebook page (check it out!). An ice cream social concluded the evening. Thank you to all who came! It truly was a fantastic week, and we couldn t have done it without the many people who played a part in it.

Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschool will begin its 15 th year as a preschool. Our Biblical theme for this year is, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5 and 6. We call ourselves a Christ-centered preschool at Jesus Lambs at Peace which means the very core of our early childhood education is Jesus Christ and Him crucified for our salvation. These students of 3, 4, and 5 learn the most valuable lesson of their life that it is through Christ alone that we live, move and have our being. He is the one who forgives our sins and grants us eternal life. We ask each day that He would direct the paths of these little ones and their teachers so that the Holy Spirit would cause faith to grow in their hearts and give them a sincere desire to serve Jesus in all they do until we reach our heavenly home. We thank Mrs. Stephanie Wentzlaff for helping our preschool for two years in the classroom, with our Facebook page and website. We thank her for the deep friendships she has made with the parents and families of our children and shining the Gospel of Jesus in the hearts of these little ones. We will miss her greatly. This fall, we welcome Mrs. Tammi Emmons into our preschool. With many years of experience in early child hood, Tammi will be a great asset to our preschool. Tammi is the wife of Roger Emmons, a student beginning his second year at our ELS seminary. We ask your prayers as we embark upon a brand-new year. We send our congratulations to the high school graduating class which filled our preschool the very first year! We began our school year with 19 students and finished with 21. We had 9 preschool graduates that first year!
