THE EPISTLE JAMES 1: Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the lights, who does not change or shift like a shadow. 18 Just as he planned, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creations. 19 Remember this, my dear brothers: Let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. 20 Certainly, a man s anger does not bring about what is right before God. 21 So after getting rid of all moral filthiness and overflowing wickedness, receive with humility the word planted in you. It is able to save your souls. 22 Be people who do what the word says, not people who only hear it. Such people are deceiving themselves. 23 In fact, if anyone hears the word and does not do what it says, he is like a man who carefully looks at his own natural face in a mirror. 24 Indeed, he carefully looks at himself; then, he goes away and immediately forgets what he looked like. 25 But the one who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues to do so since he does not hear and forget but actually does what it says that person will be blessed in what he does. 26 If anyone considers himself to be religious but deceives his own heart because he does not bridle his tongue, this person s religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled in the sight of God the Father is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. THE HOLY GOSPEL MARK 7:31-37 P: The Holy Gospel for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 7 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the 31 st verse. 31 Jesus left the region of Tyre again and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the Decapolis. 32 They brought a man to him who was deaf and had a speech impediment. They pleaded with Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 Jesus took him aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man s ears. Then he spit and touched the man s tongue. 34 After he looked up to heaven, he sighed and said, Ephphatha! (which means Be opened! ) 35 Immediately the man s ears were opened, his tongue was set free, and he began to speak plainly. 36 Jesus gave the people strict orders to tell no one, but the more he did so, the more they kept proclaiming it. 37 They were 7

8 amazed beyond measure and said, He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak! THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. In the confession of the only true God we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty coequal. 18 Inviting all youth in grades K-6 to join in the fun! Pioneers will have the inaugural meeting of the year tonight at Peace, 5-7 p.m. We will be playing in the yard, making awesome art and planning a meal which we will make together in the coming months. The theme of the year is "Building a Better You" and many exciting activities are planned for each month as we learn about how God wants us to take care of ourselves and others. We would love to have you join us! If you can't make the meeting tonight, that's ok. You can always join later in the year. 19 New Member Sunday is Name Tag Sunday Next week, September 16 th, is our new member Sunday where we invite those who have joined Peace over the last six months to be recognized at the front of church during our services. As part of this special day we would also like you to join in to make our new members feel welcome. We are asking that all of our members, old and new, wear a nametag to help our new members get to know us better. Nametags and markers will be provided in the entryway. Please make sure to pick one up next week. Thanks! Trunk R Treat Planning Meeting on Sept. 17 th This year we are looking to have a Trunk R Treat event at Peace in late October. Trunk R Treat is a fun community event where individuals are invited to decorate the trunk of their car and hand out candy to kids who trick r treat from car to car in our parking lot. If you would be interested in helping plan or volunteer for the event, please join us for a planning meeting on Monday, Sept. 17 th, at 6:30pm at Peace. Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschoolers have enjoyed their first week of classes! We thank all our parents for bringing their children to preschool. The children also enjoyed their first chapel this week. Pastor Moldstad reminded them that learning about Jesus as their Savior is the most important thing that they learn at our school. To honor your military service member On Veteran s Day 2018, Peace Lutheran Church wishes to honor members and friends who are currently or who formerly served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Information you submit about these individuals will be displayed on the flat screens at church on Sunday morning, November 11 th. Submission forms are available on the bulletin broad in the narthex. Olive CDS has an immediate need for A and B team volleyball and soccer coaches as well as officials, in order to keep these sports for this fall. 20 Mt. Olive s K-8 th grade students and teachers are gearing up this fall for their third annual Charger Challenge! The Charger Challenge it the ONE and ONLY fundraiser for the school year. Participants seek donors to sponsor them to walk the four-mile trek, from Lower North Mankato (starting at Spring Lake Park) to Upper North Mankato (Culver s) and back again! Any monetary amount is acceptable and 100% of the money collected goes to the goal of raising $20,000. Receipts for tax purposes are also available! The collected money will be used to purchase a new active board, classroom furniture and loft for the new kindergarten room, and a gaga ball pit for the school playground. In addition, the money raised will support the special programs and events enjoyed throughout the school year. Ways YOU can be a part of the Charger Challenge! Proclaim the Wonders God Has Done: The Synodical Conference came to a close after the ELS and the WELS separated from the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod over the doctrine of church fellowship. In 1993 efforts by the ELS and the WELS to form a new international organization of fellowship came to fruition in what today is known as the Confessional Evangelical Lutheran Conference (CELC) which meets on a triennial basis. 22 Bethany Lutheran College Events The Mankato chapter of the Bethany Auxiliary invites you to join us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11 th for "The Sculpture Walk on Bethany Campus" led by Prof. William Bukowski, head of the Bethany art department. We will follow Prof. Bukowski as we explore how these sculptures, which are part of the gift left to the college by art patron Lester Goetzke, affect the landscape of campus as they have been integrated at various locations. Anyone interested is most welcome to attend. Following the tour, the members of the Auxiliary will gather for a brief business meeting and refreshments. Wed., Sept. 12 th at 7 p.m. in Trinity Chapel: BLC's Guest Artist concert series kicks off the year with the Juli Wood Quartet, a jazz group from Chicago, IL. The quartet consists of Juli Wood, saxophone; Mike Schlick, drums; Clay Schaub, bass; and Paul Silbergleit, guitar. Juli Wood is the Finlandia Foundation performer of the year, performing Jazz influenced folk tunes all across the country. $10 suggested donation at the door.
