Peace Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Synod BUILT ON THE ROCK CHURCH STAFF Pastor Hartwig: Pastor Moldstad: Church Office: JESUS LAMBS AT PEACE PRESCHOOL Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Phone: Church website: Peacemankato.com Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM JANUARY 21, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY WELCOME TO PEACE! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, You sent Your Son to proclaim Your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of Your Spirit that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FOR THE CHILDREN A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. 2
THE DIVINE SERVICE Rite 1, p. 41 OPENING PRAYER P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. HYMN #211:1-4 BUILT ON THE ROCK CHOIR LORD KEEP US STEADFAST IN THY WORD TEXT: MARTIN LUTHER ARR. JOHANN WALTER THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us a true knowledge of You, and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. CHOIR REMEMBER NOT, LORD, OUR OFFENSES HENRY PURCELL THE ABSOLUTION P: Lift up your hearts unto God! Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us, and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Amen. 3
THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. CHOIR JESUS LOVES ME ARR. MICHAEL HASSELL THE LESSON JONAH 3:1-5,10 1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2 Get up, go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you. 3 So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh just as the word of the LORD had commanded. Now Nineveh was a great city to God. It required a three-day walk. 4 Jonah walked through the city for a day, and he called out, Forty more days and Nineveh is going to be overthrown! 5 The men of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least. 10 When God saw their actions, that they had turned from their evil way, God relented from the disaster which he said he would bring on them, and he did not carry it out. 4
THE EPISTLE 1 CORINTHIANS 7: I also say this, brothers: The time is short. From now on, let those who have wives live as if they have none; 30 those who weep, as if not weeping; those who rejoice, as if not rejoicing; those who buy, as if not possessing; 31 and those who use the world, as if not getting any use out of it. For the way of life that belongs to this world is passing away. THE HOLY GOSPEL MARK 1:14-20 P: The Holy Gospel for the Third Sunday after the Epiphany is written in the 1 st chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the 14 th verse. 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. 15 The time is fulfilled, he said. The kingdom of God has come near! Repent, and believe in the gospel. 16 As Jesus was going along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 Going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately Jesus called them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 5
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. HYMN #250 A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD THE SERMON 1 CORINTHIANS 7:29-31 SET APART IN CHRIST LIVE LIKE YOU RE DYING THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary s son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death: C: You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold. P: Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging: C: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death. 6
P: Prince of Peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope: C: Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel. P: Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn: C: Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do. P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent Prayer. P: Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph. C: Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. And my God will meet your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 PLEASE FILL OUT THE FRIENDSHIP REGISTER. CHOIR SONG OF TRIUMPH DALE GROTENHUIS 7
THE COLLECT P: We thank You, Almighty God, that You have built Your Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Head Cornerstone. Grant that we may be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable unto You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. CHOIR PEACE I LEAVE WITH YOU RENE CLAUSEN THE CLOSING PRAYER P: O Lord, we render unto You our heartfelt thanks that You have taught us what You would have us believe and do. Help us, O God, by Your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ, to keep Your Word in pure hearts, that we thereby may be strengthened in faith, perfected in holiness, and comforted in life and death. Amen. 8
