The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in Your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lesson Genesis 2:7-9, 15-17; 3:1-7 7 The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground-- trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. 9 The Gospel Matthew 4: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." 4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." 10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! We thank You, Lord, the Holy Spirit, that You have created in our hearts true faith, that we know of nothing to trust for our salvation, except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. O God, grant us Your grace, that we may perfectly believe that all our sins are forgiven for the sake of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, and so enlighten us by Your Holy Spirit, that, in the power of our Redeemer s death, we may day by day put off sin, and never forsake the Lord Jesus Christ, until we see Him face to face in life eternal. The study officially begins at 8:40, but you can drop children off in childcare beginning at 8:10 and have fellowship with other mothers in the social hall until the study begins. 16 Bethany Lutheran College Events Monday, March 13 at 7:00 pm in Trinity Chapel - The Bethany Concert Band and Jazz Band, directed by retiring Prof. Adrian Lo, perform the homecoming concert of their spring tour. The concert is free and the public is welcome. Thursday, March 16 - Saturday, March 18 - The 5th annual international Speechless Film Festival takes place at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato, March 16-18, The festival screens short films, feature films, and animations in a broad range of categories. Faculty Music (Instrumental Conducting) The Fine Arts division has an opening for a full-time, nine-month faculty position in the Music department. Job description is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex. Lent The season of Lent officially begins on Ash Wednesday. In Old Testament times, the Jews expressed their sorrow over sin by putting ashes on their heads. Ashes were a symbol of their own mortality and their sorrow over sin. The season of Lent extends from Ash Wednesday until Easter. It is 40 days in length, not counting Sundays. Join Us For Supper! Lenten suppers will be served from 5:15-6:15PM every Wednesday during the Lenten season. We have awesome cooks in our congregation come and enjoy the food and fellowship!
