The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, before the suffering and death of Your one and only Son, You revealed His glory on the holy mountain. Grant that we who bear His cross on earth may behold by faith the light of His heavenly glory and so be changed into His likeness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 3 THE DIVINE SERVICE Rite 1, p. 41 OPENING PRAYER P: O Lord, our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter, we are assembled in Your presence to hear Your holy Word. We pray You to open our hearts by Your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of Your Word we may be taught to repent of our sins, to believe on Jesus in life and death, and to grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Christ s sake. Amen. HYMN #54 BEAUTIFUL SAVIOR THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Let us confess our sins to God and pray: We poor sinners confess to You, O God, not only that we have been conceived and born in sin, but also that throughout life we have often and in many ways offended You, our Lord and Maker, in thought, word and deed, so that You could with perfect justice reject and condemn us for all eternity. Therefore we come before You with sorrow of heart, in dread and terror of Your holy justice and of everlasting death. Our sins are a grievous foe, which we should hate in every way as long as we live. O merciful God, You still grant us in this hour to be reminded of Your fatherly goodness. According to the promise of Your Word we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy and implore You, dearest Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your onlybegotten Son, our Brother, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised again for our justification: Forgive us all our sins through faith, which the Holy Spirit increases in our hearts to full assurance. 7 THE LESSON EXODUS 34: When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not realize that the skin of his face was shining because he had been speaking with the LORD. 30 When Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, they were amazed that the skin of his face was shining, so they were afraid to come close to him. 31 Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the rulers of the community returned to him, and Moses spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came close to him, and he gave them all of the commands that the LORD had spoken to him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses was finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would take the veil off until he came out again. Then he would come out and tell the people of Israel what he had been commanded. 35 Whenever the people of Israel saw Moses face, they would see that the skin of Moses face was shining. 8 THE ALLELUIA, VERSE THE HOLY GOSPEL LUKE 9:28-36 P: The Holy Gospel for the Last Sunday after the Epiphany, The Transfiguration of Our Lord, is written in the 9 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 28 th verse. 28 About eight days after he said these words, Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 While he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 Just then, two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with him! 31 They appeared in glory and were talking about his departure, which he was going to bring to fulfillment in Jerusalem. 8

9 32 Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep, but when they were completely awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, Master, it is good for us to be here. Let s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not realize what he was saying. 34 While he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them. They were afraid as they went into the cloud. 35 Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him! 36 After the voice had spoken, they found Jesus alone. They kept this secret and told no one in those days any of the things they had seen. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, 9

HYMN #223 O WONDROUS TYPE THE SERMON LUKE 9:28-36 LISTEN TO JESUS THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Everlasting and merciful God, we beseech You in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: C: To have mercy upon us and to hear our prayer. P: Look in mercy upon Your Church. Protect it and sanctify it by Your truth. May Your Word be taught in its purity and Your Sacraments be rightly administered. Grant unto Your Church faithful pastors who shall declare Your truth with power and shall live according to Your will. Send forth laborers into Your harvest and open the door of faith unto all unbelievers and unto the people of Israel. In mercy remember the enemies of Your Church and grant to them repentance unto life. C: O God, in the multitude of Your mercy, hear us in the truth of Your salvation. P: Let Your protecting hand be over our country and over all who travel. Prosper what is good among us and bring to naught every evil counsel and purpose. Protect and bless Your servants, the President of the United States, the Governor of this state, our judges and magistrates and all in authority. Fit them for their high calling by the gift of Your Spirit of wisdom and fear, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. C: Hear, O Lord, and have mercy! Lord be our helper. P: According to Your promise, O God, be the defender of the widow and the father of the orphan. Relieve and comfort the sick and the sorrowful (especially our 10

11 brother/sister who is ill/grieving). Graciously help those who are assaulted by the devil and who are in peril of death. Be the strength of those who are suffering for the sake of Christ s holy name. Grant that we may live together in peace and prosperity. Bestow upon us good and seasonable weather; and bless us with upright Christian counsel in all that we undertake. C: O Lord, be with all in trouble. Hear their prayers to the honor of Your Name. P: We especially commend to Your care and keeping this Your congregation which You have bought with a great price. Keep from us all offenses and bind us together in the unity of Your holy love. Grant that the little ones who are baptized in Your name may be brought up in Your fear. At Your table give to those who there commune with You peace and life everlasting. C: Let all rejoice who trust in You; let them shout for joy because You defend them. P: Be merciful, O God, to all, according to Your great love in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Grant that we may be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable unto You, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. 17 Family Night Pizza & Pictionary Our next Family Night will be on Friday, March 8 th, at 6pm. The theme will be Pizza and Pictionary. We invite you to bring a pizza (homemade or store bought) to share. We will be playing a large group version of Pictionary with multiple teams competing against each other. All are welcome to attend. Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschool will be having their annual Open House on Tuesday, March 12 th, 6-8 p.m. It will be an entertaining evening of crafts, facepainting, games, a sing-a-long, food and fun. If you would like to enroll your child in our Christ-centered preschool for next fall, this event is for you. If you would like to help, please let us know. Moms supporting Moms in raising godly children Moms On a Mission Spring Schedule: The Peace/Mt. Olive Moms On a Mission (M.O.M.s) bible study will resume in February and will meet through the month of April. Morning and evening groups will be studying different curriculums this session. Please see the table below for specifics. New and returning mothers, please register by ing the appropriate contact so we can have materials prepared for you! New mothers welcome to join any study at any time. Morning M.O.M.s Study: When: Thursdays, 8:30-10am (can drop children off in childcare at 8:15), beginning Feb. 7 Where: Peace Lutheran Church, North Mankato Study: Morning study will resume its study of the book, Boundaries, by Cloud and Townsend. Pastor Hartwig will join at the end of the study each week to provide biblical principles, answer questions, and give encouragement. 18 Let s start thinking about summer! Mark your calendars for this year s VBS. June 10 th 13 th, from 9 AM to noon. VBS is for children ages four through going into sixth grade. Please note, we are adding a fourth morning! Registration and volunteer opportunities will come in the near future. Lenten Meals Ash Wednesday is March 6 and during Lent Peace Lutheran Church members will be hosting a meal every Wednesday from 5:15 6:15 before the 6:30 p.m. worship service. Please come for the food, fellowship and enjoying time with your friends along with no worries about trying to feed your family at home and make it to church on time. The schedule of when your group is serving is listed below--please note, they are not in numerical order so check the schedule carefully. If you have wondered about being a Group Leader but don t know what it involves, being a Co-leader is a great way to find out. The leaders are responsible for organizing the meals by reminding the group members when it is their turn to serve. The leaders are responsible for reminding their group what month they are scheduled for serving Sunday refreshments, but the leaders are not responsible for making coffee or serving every Sunday. The church members of each group are reminded to volunteer their service, whether it be making food, serving, helping to set-up tables and chairs or putting their hands in the dishwater. Bethany Lutheran College Events Wed., Feb. 27 at 7 pm in Trinity Chapel - The Bethany Lutheran College Concert Band performs on tour in both February and March. Their program features a variety of selections that will entertain and educate audiences of all ages. Included are several beautiful, lyrical tunes: Be Thou My Vision, Salvation Is Created, and Nostalgia, while other selections will be both powerful and exciting: John Philip Sousa s The Thunderer, Hans Zimmer s Pirates of The Caribbean: At World s End, and John Powell s How to Train Your Dragon. The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill donation will be received to help offset tour expenses. 19
