Peace Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Synod Serving Christ with united hearts and hands and voices Pastor Timothy Hartwig Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschool Church Office: Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Cell Phone: Phone: April 20, 2014, 9:00 AM Easter Sunday Welcome to Peace! Thank you for being with us today to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord. We left church on Friday in silence, contemplating the death of Jesus in our place and for our sins. Just as the earthquake broke the silence early on that first Easter morning, our voices are raised to sing our thanks and praise to our resurrected Lord. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? 1 Christ is risen. He is risen indeed! If you are a guest or visitor with us this morning, we are glad that you are here and we hope you will join us again soon. The ushers are available to help if you need assistance. Today, April 20 th : 6:30 AM Easter Sunrise Service 7:30 AM Easter Breakfast 9:00 AM Easter Festival Service 10:00 AM Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, April 27 th : 8:30 AM Worship Service 9:45 AM Sunday School and Adult Bible Class 10:45 AM Worship Service 1 1 Corinthians 15:55 2
Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you conquered death and opened the gate to eternal life. Grant that we, who have been raised with him through baptism, may walk in newness of life and ever rejoice in the hope of sharing his glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be dominion and praise now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped to the room to let you hear and see the service. Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. 3
The Resurrection of Our Lord P: Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again. P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed. 2 P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed. Choir Come ye Faithful Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness; God hath brought his Israel into joy from sadness; 'Tis the spring of souls today, Christ hath burst his prison, And from three days sleep in death as a sun hath risen. Now the queen of seasons bright with the day of splendour, With the royal feast of feasts, comes its joy to render; Comes to glad Jerusalem, who with true affection Welcomes in unwearied strains Jesus' resurrection. Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb's dark portal, Nor the watchers, nor the seal, hold thee as a mortal; But today amidst thine own thou didst stand, bestowing That thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing. (Public Domain) P: In the name of the Father, who created us, And of the Son, who died for us, And of the Holy Spirit, who makes us holy. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sins, knowing that our risen Savior has defeated death and won the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. 2 This is known as the paschal greeting. For centuries, Christians have used this greeting during the 50 days of Easter. When the Pastor says, in the service or sermon, Christ is risen, the congregation responds, He is risen indeed! Please follow this tradition during the service this morning. 4
C: O Father in heaven, your word proclaims, the wages of sin is death. 3 I confess that I have sinned against you by my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart. I have not loved my neighbor as I ought. Because of my sins, I deserve temporal and eternal death. But Your word also proclaims, For God so loved the world that He gave is only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 4 You raised Jesus from the dead, so that I could be certain of my salvation. Therefore, I plead for your mercy and humbly ask you to forgive my sins and grant me eternal life for Jesus sake. P: Lift up your hearts! Our Lord Jesus has paid for all your sins by His innocent suffering and death. His triumphant resurrection proves that God the Father has accepted His perfect life and death on your behalf. Our resurrected Lord said, If you forgive anyone His sins, they are forgiven. 5 Therefore, as a called servant of the living Christ and by His authority, I forgive all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Congregation & Choir I Know that My Redeemer Lives Congregation & Choir, verses 1 & 3, Choir, v. 7; Congregation & Choir, v I know that my Redeemer lives; What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, He lives, who once was dead; He lives, my ever-living Head. 3. He lives to bless me with His love; He lives to plead for me above. He lives my hungry soul to feed; He lives to help in time of need. 7. He lives and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death. He lives my mansion to prepare; He live to bring me safely there. 8. He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same. O the sweet joy this sentence gives; I know that my Redeemer lives! P: Let us pray. C: Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of Your Son, You conquered death and opened the gates to eternal life. Strengthen us by our Savior s victory to put away sin and lead a holy life. We ask this in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3 Romans 6:23 4 John 3:16 5 John 20:23 5
First Lesson Jonah 2:2-9 2 He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry. 3 You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. 4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' 5 The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God. 7 "When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. 8 "Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. 9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD." Psalm of the Day Psalm 118 (selected verses) P: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; C: His love endures forever. P: Let Israel say: C: His love endures forever. P: In my anguish I cried to the Lord, and he answered by setting me free. 6
C: The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. P: What can man do to me? C: The Lord is with me; P: He is my helper. C: I will look in triumph on my enemies. P: The Lord is my strength and my song; C: He has become my salvation. P: Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: C: The Lord s right hand has done mighty things! P: I will not die but live, C: and will proclaim what the Lord has done. P: The stone the builders rejected C: has become the capstone; P: the Lord has done this, C: and it is marvelous in our eyes. P: This is the day the Lord has made; C: let us rejoice and be glad in it. Second Lesson Colossians 3:1-4 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Women s Chorus Sing We with a Merry Heart Gospel Lesson Matthew 28: After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." 7
8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." Hymn: #353, Jesus Lives! The Victory s Won Exordium 6 Exordium Hymn: #348, He Is Arisen! Glorious Word! Sermon Romans 4:25 Christ is Risen; We are Forgiven! 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. The Offering The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32 Please fill out the Friendship Register. The Prayer of the Church P: O Lord God, our strength, our song, and our salvation, you fulfilled your promises by the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, from the dead. C: Thanks be to God! You give us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. P: In your compassion you sent Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down his life to rescue the lost. C: Drive out all doubt and gloom that we may delight in your glorious triumph. P: Lift our eyes heavenward to see him who lives to make intercession for the saints, and grant us confidence in the greatness of his power. Keep before us the vision of your redeemed people standing before your throne and singing the song of victory: 6 The Exordium is an introduction for the festival day. This is a tradition of Norwegian Lutherans that dates to the 16 th century. After the Exordium, the congregation stands to sing the festival hymn. 8
C: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive wisdom and power and honor and glory and praise. P: Make us instruments of your peace as we bring the good news of hope and new life to those around us. Guide us in the use of all that you have entrusted to us: our time, our talents, and our treasures. C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for you. P: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. P: Gracious Father, you have restored to us the joy of your salvation. With happy hearts, we come before you and say: C: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Blessing P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift us His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen. P: Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed. Hymn: #352, Jesus Christ is Risen Today 9
