The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Lord God, You call us to work in Your kingdom and leave not one standing idle. Help us to order our lives by Your wisdom and to serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is the first room on the left as you walk into the church building. The Confession of Sin P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. 10 The Alleluia The Holy Gospel P: The Holy Gospel for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 20 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the 1 st verse. The Gospel Matthew 20: "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard. 2 He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. 3 "About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4 He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' 5 So they went. "He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. 6 About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?' 7 "'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.' 8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.' 9 "The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. 10 So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive 10

But each one of them also received a denarius. 11 When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.' 13 "But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? 14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15 Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?' 16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On that day, the handbell choir from our sister congregation, King of Grace Lutheran (ELS) of Golden Valley, MN, will make a return visit to Peace. The group was last here to edify our worship services with their music in May of The group is led by Randy Gerdes and has been playing together for 25 years. The 11 ringers, playing 4- plus octaves of Malmark bells and 4 octaves of Malmark handchimes, visit churches of our fellowship 3-4 times each year to share their gift of music. They will play several numbers in both services. Don't miss this opportunity to hear this excellent group! Harvest Table Time! Do you have bonus garden or orchard produce? It's that time of year again! Bring it in to the harvest table at Peace, and watch your church friends reap the rewards of your green thumb! The harvest table is set up is located on the west wall of the main church entryway. If you can, bring containers such as cardboard boxes or plastic bags, depending on the produce you're sharing, to simplify the process. It's always exciting to see what ends up on the harvest table!
