What Are We to Do with the Weeds? Matthew 13:24-30 Peace Lutheran Church 2090 Commerce Drive North Mankato, MN 56003
Peace Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Synod Built on the Rock Church Staff Pastor Hartwig: Pastor Moldstad: Church Office: Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschool Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Phone: Church website: Peacemankato.com Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM October 29, 2017 Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Peace! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Grant, O merciful Lord, to Your faithful people pardon and peace that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve You with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. 2
The Divine Service Rite 2, p. 60 Opening Hymn: #82, With the Lord Begin Thy Task The Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Confession of Sin P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; 3
P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O Most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlybegotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. The Introit P: The Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. Give glory to Your name, O Lord, and deal with Your servant according to Your mercy. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised In the city of our God, in His holy mountain. The Gloria Patri 4

The Salutation The Collect P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. The Lesson Isaiah 25:6-9 6 On this mountain the LORD of Armies will prepare for all peoples a feast of choice food, a feast of the best wines, with the best cuts of meat, and the finest of wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that covers all peoples, the burial cloth stretched over all nations. 8 He has swallowed up death forever! The LORD God will wipe away the tears from every face. He will take away the shame of his people throughout the earth. For the Lord has spoken. 9 On that day it will be said, Surely, this is our God! 8
We waited for him, and he saved us! This is the LORD! We waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation! The Epistle Philippians 4: Rejoice in the Lord always! I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if anything is excellent, and if anything is praiseworthy, think about these things. 9 The things that you learned, received, heard, and saw in me: Keep doing these things. And the God of peace will be with you. 10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord now that you have revived your concern for me once again. Actually, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I lack anything; in fact, I have learned to be content in any circumstances in which I find myself. 12 I know what it is to live in humble circumstances, and I know what it is to have more than enough. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, while being full or hungry, while having plenty or not enough. 13 I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. 10:45 Adult Choir, The Peace of God Let your gentleness be known, so all may know the Lord is near. Do not worry; reach out to God in prayer. Stay with all that you have learned, and all that you have heard and seen, and the peace of God will be with you. Whatever is true, whatever is just, all that is pure and pleasing and all that is worthy of praise; think on these things. The peace of God beyond all understanding will guard your hearts and guide your minds in Christ Jesus. by David Haas Reprinted under OneLicense.net A The Verse of the Day P: Alleluia. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Alleluia. (Isaiah 25:9b cf NIV) 9
The Alleluia The Holy Gospel P: The Holy Gospel for the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 22 nd chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, beginning at the 1 st verse. The Gospel Matthew 22: Jesus spoke to them again in parables. He said, 2 The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent out his servants to summon those who were invited to the wedding banquet, but they did not want to come. 4 Then he sent out other servants and said, Tell those who are invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and my fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet! 5 But those who were invited paid no attention and went off, one to his own farm, another to his business. 6 The rest seized the king s servants, mistreated them, and killed them. 7 As a result, the king was very angry. He sent his army and killed those murderers and burned their town. 8 Then he said to his servants, The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 So go to the main crossroads and invite as many as you find to the wedding banquet. 10 Those servants went out to the roads and gathered together everyone they found, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled 10
with guests. 11 But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He said to him, Friend, how did you get in here without wearing wedding clothes? The man was speechless. 13 Then the king told the servants, Tie him hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Creed P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. 11
The Chief Hymn: #429, Chief of Sinners Though I Be The Sermon: Matthew 13:24-30 What Are We to Do with the Weeds? 24 He presented another parable to them: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 When the plants sprouted and produced heads of grain, the weeds also appeared. 27 The servants of the owner came and said to him, Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where did the weeds come from? 28 He said to them, An enemy did this. The servants asked him, Do you want us to go and gather up the weeds? 29 No, he answered, because when you gather up the weeds, you might pull up the wheat along with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, First, gather up the weeds, bind them in bundles, and burn them. Then, gather the wheat into my barn. P: The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus unto everlasting life. Amen. The Offertory Verse 12

The Offering The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. II Corinthians 9:10-11 Please fill out the Friendship Register. The Prayer of the Church The Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Hymn #522, O Faithful God, Thanks Be to Thee The Collect P: Grant, we beseech You, Almighty God, unto Your Church Your Holy Spirit and the wisdom which comes down from above, that Your Word, as becomes it, may not be bound, but have free course and be preached to the joy and edifying of Christ s holy people, that in steadfast faith we may serve You and in the confession of Your name abide unto the end; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever. 14
The Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.
