1 Salem Lutheran Church P O B O X H I T T E R D A L, M N M A Y Getting to know Tom Olson, Interim Pastor Pr. Tom was born on Dec. 7, 1947 in Fergus Falls, MN and was educated at both Fergus Falls High school (class of 66) and Fergus Falls Community College (class of 68). He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, earning a Bachelors of Science in English Education, in 1970, and a Masters of Divinity from Luther Seminary in 1977, with a year of military service, from 1970 to 1971, in between. He also took an additional year of training at Luther Seminary in Social Change and Marriage and Family Counseling, from 1977 until During his seminary training, he served his yearlong internship at Faith Lutheran Church in Madison, WI, under the supervision of Pr. E. Astrup, and was ordained on July 16, Since his ordination, Pr. Tom has served several calls in Minnesota, starting with Revere Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran of Johnsonville Township in Southwestern Minnesota from 1978 until He then served three continuous calls to Trinity Lutheran in Pelican Rapids, MN from 1981 until 2000; while at Trinity, he served first as the Associate Pastor, then a Partner in Ministry, and finally the Senior Pastor. His final settled call was Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Minnesota from 2000 until 2014, when he retired on July 1. Since retiring, he has served two interim pastorates, one at the Halstad and Hendrum Parish from January to June 2015, and on in Ashby, MN from November 2015 until January 1, On a more personal level, he is married to Claudia Olson, who is a retired elementary school teacher, and together they have five children (Hans, Leif, Britta, Ingrid, and Karin), and three grandchildren (Ryker, Elin, and new baby Benjamin). In 2014, Claudia and Tom moved to Hawley, to settle down for retirement. Pr. Tom s hobbies include walking and reading. Pr. Tom will be available 24/7 by telephone, and he will be working in the parish mornings and afternoons, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Since some of that time will be spent in visitation at the nursing homes and hospitals, you should make an appointment if you want to talk with him in his office, OR feel free to stop in if you see his car at the church. If you are aware of someone who would like a visit from Pastor Tom, please alert him to that fact and do not assume that he will know that you or a loved one is in the hospital if you don t tell him. 2 Regular Council Meeting Carolyn Juell, Council Secretary Salem Lutheran Church Council Minutes, Sunday April 22, 2018 at 11 a.m. Council members present: Raynelle Anderson, Jeff Bettels, Susan Dunham, Warren Dunham, Carolyn Juell, Roger Mattson, Pastor Tom Olson, and Gary Peterson. The secretary s report was read. Roger made a motion to accept the report. The motion was seconded by Jeff. Motion carried. Treasurer s report was read. Roger made a motion to accept the report as read. The motion was seconded by Raynelle. Motion carried. Motion to pay the bills was made by Gary. It was seconded by Jeff. Motion carried. Pastor s Report: Pastor Tom has made visits to those member on the visitation list he was provided. If you would like a visit or know of someone who would like a visit please contact him. Pastor Tom baptized Tina Vissor, Bobby Lee Halvorson, and William Halvorson. Raynelle made a motion that were accept Tina Vissor, Bobby Lee Halvorson, and William Halvorson as baptized and confirmed members of Salem. Roger seconded the motion. Motion carried. Craig Mattson talked about technology issues Live streaming of the church service was complete for both services Easter Sunday services, Sunday April 8 and Sunday April 22. When the service is lived streamed it can be viewed during the service and then will be available approximately 1 hour after the service. There was a positive reaction to the lived streaming of services and some have expressed disappointment when it was not streamed. To continue live streaming the services, we need individuals willing to come in about 20 minutes before service and monitor the streaming during service. Craig is willing to train anyone who is willing to volunteer. We need an individual(s) to act as an administrator to update the Salem website and Facebook sites on a regular basis. Bible Study done together. 7pm - Evening Circle: Circle will meet at church. Helly is hostess. Bible Study together. SLW News: Fair Hills Women s Retreat is June 11 & 12, overnight or just Tuesday. Salem paid 45% of her salary, and Bethlehem paid 55%. The suggestion was made to move services to 9:30 instead of 9:00. It was decided to leave them at 9:00. Salem bought Atlanta s portion of the parsonage for $1.
