The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and everlasting God, You are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour upon us the abundance of Your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. 4 P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. 8 THE LESSON 1 KINGS 19:3-8 3 Elijah was afraid, and he ran for his life. He went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and he left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day s journey into the wilderness. There he sat down under a broom tree, where he prayed that he would die. He said, I ve had enough, LORD. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. 5 Then he lay down and went to sleep under the broom tree. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. 6 Then he looked around, and near his head there was a loaf of bread baking on coals and a jar of water, so he ate and drank, and then he lay down again. 7 Then the angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, because the journey is too much for you. 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Then, with the strength gained from that food he walked for forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God. THE EPISTLE EPHESIANS 4:30 5:2 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of every kind of bitterness, rage, anger, quarreling, and slander, along with every kind of malice. 32 Instead, be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one other, just as God in Christ has forgiven us. 5:1 Therefore, be imitators of God as his dearly loved children. 2 And walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 9 THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 6 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. John, beginning at the 41 st verse. THE GOSPEL JOHN 6: So the Jews started grumbling about him, because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 42 They asked, Isn t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? So how can he say, I have come down from heaven? 43 Jesus answered them, Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the Last Day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46 I am not saying that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He is the one who has seen the Father. 47 Amen, Amen, I tell you: The one who believes in me has eternal life. 48 I am the Bread of Life. 49 Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 9

12 THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops. We will be offering only one service on Sunday mornings, at 9am, and Wednesday evening services at 6:30pm. All Ages Summer Bible Study - School ended in May, but your study of the Bible doesn t have to. This summer Peace is offering an All Ages Bible Study before our service, from 8:15 to 8:45am, beginning on June 3 rd. Each lesson will cover a familiar Bible Story and relate it to a section of the Catechism. All are welcome to attend. Members - The new church pictorial directory is ready to be picked up! Please stop by the office and get your copy. Green Thumb Needed - The Board for Maintenance is looking for individuals in the congregation who would be willing to help care for landscaping around church. This would include weeding, pruning, watering, and in general caring for the shrubbery around the church during the summer and early fall. 23 Calling All Writers! The writers' group meeting will be held Saturday, August 18, at 10 AM here at Peace. Critique writings, share resources, overcome writer's block, have fun, and commiserate with your fellow writers! Come and go as you please. All genres welcome, fiction and nonfiction. If you are interested in joining the writers' group, please contact Jessie Fries at Outdoor service and potluck brunch on August 19 th. Please bring chairs to sit on and food to share. All are encouraged to attend this annual fellowship event. Jesus Lambs at Peace Preschool s Back-To-School Picnic is Tuesday, August p.m. and we need your help! Would you like to volunteer to help with registration, cook, serve food, gather children s supplies, visit with parents, or bring a dessert or a salad, set up tables or clean-up? Member Needs - Merry Puol and her family recently moved to a new apartment and are in need of beds for three of her children. She would prefer one bunk bed and one single twin bed but would be happy with anything. 24 Proclaim the Wonders God Has Done: In the 1980s the focus for home missions shifted from offering aid to established churches to that of supporting exploratory missions. Former President Orvick observed, Where would we be today if it were not for the dedicated efforts of our members and our mission boards who, with limited resources, boldly took steps to organize mission churches? SUDANESE OUTREACH PICNIC WHAT: A Potluck Picnic with soccer, games, and other activities WHEN: Sunday, August 12 12:00 p.m. WHERE: Erlandson Park 101 N Belmont Dr. Mankato, MN Join area ELS and WELS congregations as we get to know members of the Sudanese community here in Mankato. Many of our churches have members who are Sudanese, and this picnic is being planned to build connections with even more people in this closeknit community of ~500 here in Mankato! Please bring a dish to share. Hot lunch servers are needed for the school year for Mt. Olive Lutheran School's hot lunch program. MVL Food Service Assistant Opening - Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School has a part-time position open in the food service at MVL. This position is for about 6 to 6 1/2 hours per day during the school year. Tasks include food preparation and service, washing dishes and clean up. Director of Mission Advancement Position Open at MVL - Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School is looking for a male member of a ELS/WELS church to serve as a full time Director of Mission Advancement. MVL Opening Service & Installation marks MVL's 40th year of training students for Christian lives.
