October 16, 2016: $6, October 15, 2017: $5, Food Pantry: $1, Thank you very much for your generosity. You always care for and support our Parish programs, ministries and plant maintenance. Readings for Sunday October 29, 2017 Ex 22:20-26/Ps 18:2-4, 47, 51/1 Thes 1:5c-10/Mt 22:34-40 In the Gospel today, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus by giving him a Roman coin, and asking, Should we pay taxes to Caesar or not? The Jews despised paying taxes to the Romans. Jesus knows their malice so he asks, Whose image is this, and whose title? The word image in Greek is eikon. In those days, when a king came to power he would stamp his own image and title on the coins to show that they all belonged to him. So, when the Pharisees say that it is Caesar s icon or image on the coin, Jesus has a clever reply. Then give back to Caesar what belongs to him and give back to God what belongs to God. Theologically, though, there is a deeper meaning. Jesus words do not mean that God and Caesar are equals. Humans bear God s image, and wherever they live and operate whether in the social, economic, political, or religious realm they belong to God. Their primary loyalties do not switch when they move out of church and into the voting booth. (W. Brueggemann, et al.) For years, people have tried to solve church and state issues by quoting Jesus, as if we have to choose between being good citizens or good Christians. But Jesus doesn t solve those issues. He gives us the sacred principle: all God s children are stamped with the Divine Icon. We must struggle with how our family relationship bears on our decisions. Do you feel joyful, knowing you are stamped with God s icon? We are graced in this parish with people who have so many skills to offer. We continue to plead for parishioners to come forward to share their God-given gifts of time and talent to use their skills around the parish with regard to maintenance and repair work which must be done, and to become active in some ministry of our Parish WORD, WORSHIP, SERVICE, COMMUNITY BUILDING. This is stewardship. Then give back to Caesar what belongs to him and give back to God what belongs to God. The regular use of Sunday envelopes or WeShare (ParishPay) our stewardship of treasure is so important!! In order to be married, to have a child baptized or to be a godparent or sponsor, to enroll your child in our Religious Education program, and to enroll your child in our sacramental preparation programs, you must be able to demonstrate that you are a practicing Catholic that you are participating at Mass and contributing to the support of Ascension Parish. Filling out a registration form alone does not accomplish this. USING ENVELOPES OR WESHARE EVERY SUNDAY DOES. It also enables us to thank you and provide you with a record of your contributions for tax purposes. This is stewardship. Then give back to Caesar what belongs to him and give back to God what belongs to God. Another part of good stewardship is how we participate in our Sunday worship. Are we giving our best thanks to God by our behavior (by our being on time for Mass and staying till the end); is our attire worthy of church; is our participation active in prayer and song, is our worship sensitivity to those who worship with us (cell phones ringing during Mass)? Then give back to Caesar what belongs to him and give back to God what belongs to God. Missionaries work in many fields including education, healthcare, orphanages, pastoral care, spiritual education, administration and formation of seminarians and novices. The work of missionaries is a vital element in protecting human rights and religious freedom in countries suffering oppression and injustice. Missionaries also work in projects that make the difference between life and death in many countries by providing basic necessities food, clothing, healthcare, shelter and education. Through our missionaries, we offer the precious gift of Jesus life to so many peoples throughout the entire world. On this World Mission Sunday may our prayers and our monetary offerings help our missionaries to be the gift of Jesus, the Good News, to the world. We will celebrate our annual Prayer of Remembrance on All Saints Day, Wednesday, Nov. 1 st during the 7:30pm Mass. It is a special time for us to remember our parishioners, family members and friends who have died during this past year. If you wish to remember someone at this Mass, please fill out and return the 2017 Prayer of Remembrance Response Form in the bulletin and return it to the Rectory Office by October 27 th.. All Souls envelopes are available at the doors of the church. We will remember these deceased loved ones throughout the month of November. Sunday we celebrate Father Tim s Birthday. We are so blessed to have him here at Ascension. Please join me in wishing him many more years of health and happiness! Know that I pray for you every day. Please pray for me, too. God Love You! 1
