We Worship. We Witness. We Celebrate the Sacraments Baptism Parents are requested to call the Parish Office at least two months before child s birth to make arrangements. New Parents Instruction Class will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 257. Baptism is celebrated every Sunday of the month at 1:45pm. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Anyone who wishes to join the Catholic Church should call the Parish Office. Reconciliation (Confession) Saturday 4:00 to 4:45pm in the Church or call the Parish Office for an appointment. Matrimony Couples are requested to call at least six months before the wedding for an appointment with a Priest or Deacon to set the date and make arrangements. No arrangements can be made by phone. Anointing of the Sick Fourth Saturday of the month at the 9:00am Mass or call the Parish Office. We Assemble for Prayer Rosary Every Monday at 8:20am we pray the Patriotic Rosary. Before the 9:00am Eucharist Tuesdays through Saturdays we pray the Rosary. Miraculous Medal Novena We pray this at the 7:45am & 9am Mass every Tuesday. Men s Spirituality Group: Witness and grow in Faith. Meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Church. Nocturnal Adoration A Holy Hour with the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the First Friday of each month, from 9:00pm to 10:00pm in the Church.

Thomas More Coogan, Administrator Dear Good Folks of St. Joseph s, Every day here I am discovering wonderful things about this parish and meeting the many great people who make it so. For example - last week I accompanied Fr. Augustine (who has come from Awka, Nigeria to help us for the summer) to West Gilgo Beach for a 9:00 AM Mass that we celebrate in the tiny chapel there during the season. Also this week, some great soul made an anonymous gift of $3,000 to the parish. When Jesus sends out the disciples in this Sunday s Gospel, He instructs them not to take along anything with them, but to trust that God s people will provide. When it comes to inspiration, God s people here in Babylon are great at supplying it to those who minister here with and for you. At your service and His, Fr Tom Fr. Tom with Anne Tuffin and Claire Moule. Capital Campaign Gift Recognition St. Joseph s Church Centennial Campaign has ended. With the conclusion of the Campaign, a plan has commenced for the recognition of those donors who have completed their pledge of $3, or more. Guidelines for the five levels of Gift Recognition were given in the Centennial Campaign Booklet. If you were at one of those levels, a letter with an enclosed form was sent to you in May. Unfortunately, all forms were not returned by the deadline June 22. Please complete the form that was enclosed to reflect the way in which you would like the donation to be acknowledged. As soon as all the forms are returned, we will assemble the names under the designated Level of Pledge and send them to the engraver. They will in turn set them on the pages that will be displayed in a brass Memorial Book which will be mounted in the Church. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the 12 disciples. St. Paul reminds us that we too, are chosen. To whom have I been sent? For what have I been chosen? 5 Sunday, July 15, 2018 Deacon s Corner Reflections REJECTION TODAYS GOSPEL, MARK 6:7-13 Hang on to your friends. I think that is the reason Jesus sent them out two by two. That way, no matter how tough the going got, they could always hang on to each other. The worst thing a person can do in a time of rejection is give in to the cynical suggestion that no one can be trusted. Don t ever allow that thought to stain the fabric of your soul, because my friend, it is simply not true. God can be trusted: He cares about you. What is more, there are some people with the love of God in their hearts, and they care about you. In hours of rejection, don t close up your heart and close out your friends. Hang on to them, believe in them; that s the time you need them most. Life is a team sport, no one can play by himself. God has decreed companionship. It is part of His plan; so He sent them out two by two. And I know that s easier to say than to do; so I do not say it flippantly. But that in effect is what Jesus told his disciples to do: If any place will not receive you, shake its dust from your feet.as you leave. They were leaving that rejection behind and not carrying it with them to the next place. That is a fundamental lesson of life; we all need to learn it. The most dangerous thing about rejection is that it can accumulate, become a habit, and eventually turn into self rejection. When that happens, the human spirit is in desperate straits. God loves you. Christ died for you. That makes you very important. Believe that. Accept yourself, and get on with the business of living FULTON SHEEN SAID IT WELL, MANY YEARS AGO LIFE IS WORTH LIVING Deacon Mike THE WRONG MESSAGE AGAIN The Fourth of July was in the middle of the week this year, which put a dent in some of the usual plans people make to extend the holiday celebration. Of course, it had no effect on the estimated 30,000 people who braved the 90-degree heat to witness the spectacle a word I purposely use of the now annual Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest. I will not embarrass readers by announcing the winners or the amount consumed, but such a spectacle seems to be in stark contrast with the plight of hunger that exists in so many places. Do you know over 65,000 Long Islanders receive emergency food assistance in a given week? Our parish has long been in the forefront in providing food to those in need in the Babylon area. St. Joseph s is clearly not alone in this effort as other local churches, service organizations like Rotary, soup kitchens, and other volunteers who serve food to others make extraordinary efforts to address this critical need. In comparison to the population, however, those who are involved represent a small fraction of those who can. So, while the media focuses on the extravagance, we should look for the call of others who are responding to this need. Feed the hungry and Give drink to the thirsty are Corporal Works of Mercy we readily recognize. Mindful of our responsibility of those less fortunate, let us answer the call the next time we go to a supermarket when representatives are asking for donations or simply write a check to an agency helping the hungry. Such Grace-filled actions are what we are called to do. Let us send the right message. well. Religion and Rock Tune into Religion and Rock with Msgr. Baptism Ministry Baptism Hospitality Ministry The Baptism Hospitality Ministry is looking for volunteers. Be the first person to help welcome the babies to our faith. The responsibilities are: 1. Setting up the Baptismal area for the Priest/Deacon. 2. Assisting parents and guests to their seats. 3. Assisting Priest/Deacon during the Sacrament. 4. Handing out Baptismal Certificate. The obligation will be approximately one Sunday per month from 1:30-2:30PM. We are happy to provide them with small emergency kits of ready-to-eat food, that is, food that doesn t need to be heated or refrigerated. Unfortunately, our stock is running low. Please help us. Outreach is urgently in need of the following items in small or traveler size: Adult Backpacks (New or used in good condition) Toothbrushes Soap Shampoo Toothpaste Cleansing wipes Razors You pray for the hungry, then you feed them. This is how prayer works Pope Francis We also always can use Men underwear (S, M, L, XL) Women underwear (S, M, L) Bottled water Canned soda or juice Granola or cereal bars Tuna packets Liquid Instant Breakfast Snack size fruit cups Small bags chips, trail mix, pretzels, cookies, etc. Cheese and cracker packages Outreach also needs: We could always use Grocery/Store Gift Cards (ShopRite, Stop & Shop, Aldi, Kmart, Target, etc.) Target and ShopRite gift cards are not only used to help families with food, but they are also used by our clients to pay for their medications in the Pharmaceutical Department. Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age and older. Did You Know? In 2017, the Knights of Columbus charitable donations were more than $185 million. The Knights of Columbus provided over 75.6 million hours of charitable service in The Knights of Columbus provides scholarships and grants to children of its members who attend Catholic high schools, colleges and universities. You may find all the information in our handbook on the website. The Faith Formation Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9 am-4 pm. If you come between the hours of 9 am 9:30 am, you will need to call the office to enter the building: Please note: the Faith Formation Office will close for the summer beginning July 9 th. Please register your children before the break if you want your child to be in a specific class or if you want to request a certain day and/or time. We place the children on a first come, first serve basis and each year we get a number of new families registering. Catechists and Hall Monitors are needed for next year please contact the Faith Formation Office if you are interested in volunteering: All volunteers who work with children must undergo a background check and take a Virtus Training course. New Family Registration if you would like to register a new student in the Faith Formation Program, please come to the office and bring the original baptismal certificate for each child you plan to register (even if your child was baptized here at St. Joseph) and a check or cash for the registration fee. The annual registration fee is $145 for one child, $210 for two children and $265 for three or more.
