Are you ready to grow in your knowledge and understanding of the Church and her ecclesiological principles? Here comes an opportunity at our parish to come grow in your knowledge of the Faith as we learn together and get re-educated on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The instructor of this class is Fr. Ethel Anarado. Our main text is The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Please call Annette Wexler to sign up at Spiritual Adoption Prayer Program Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Joseph s announces an adoption program for young and old alike. The members of our parish family will soon have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived this month. Not all babies make it to birth. Many parents tragically experience the loss of a child to miscarriage or premature birth. And more than 3,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. These are the babies you are being asked to adopt simply by praying for him or her each day. You may adopt a child individually or as a family by signing up during the weekend of October 6th, Respect Life Sunday. Prayer pledges will be collected during Mass. A selection of prayer cards with prayers will be available. It is suggested that you name the child for whom you will be praying, which will remind you that, although you may never meet the child in this life, you truly are praying for a specific child who needs your prayers. Watch the bulletin for monthly reports describing your baby s development. In June we will celebrate the births of our spiritually adopted babies by collecting baby items which will be given to mothers in need of assistance. There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God have given you? 3

Little Rock Bible Study "James, Peter, and Jude: The Catholic Letters " The Little Rock Scripture Study has been a part of the St. Joseph s Adult Enrichment program for several years. The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register at the Parish Center. If you have any questions, please contact JoAnn Bello at joannbello@optonline.net. 6 Sunday, October 7, 2018 Deacon s Corner A CHILD WILL SHOW THE WAY (MK 1O:13-16) In part of our Gospel reading today, Jesus says that some of the traits of childhood should become a permanent part of life. Specifically, he says, Anyone who refuses to come to God as a little child can never become a part of his kingdom. Look at the curiosity in the faces of children; listen to their thousand one questions as excitedly they seek to uncover the mysteries of their world. This is one of the beautiful things of childhood and should be retained as a permanent part of life. The closed heart and the closed mind are inventions of the adult world and have no place in God s Kingdom. It is not without reason that those first followers of Jesus were called Disciples. The word means student, learner. To become a follower of Christ is to enroll in a school from which we will never graduate. There is always more beyond, something new to be experienced, some new grace to be lived. We have a proverb that says, You can t teach an old dog new tricks. It seems to me that that proverb is a convenient excuse for mentally and spiritually lazy adults. Those of us who may fall in the category of old dogs, who should be constantly learning new tricks. There is so much to know that we have never learned, so much to be in life that we have not yet become with regards to open hearts and minds. Our prayer to God should be: Make me a child again. I remember a few lines from a poem I learned many moons past which says: I remember, I remember the fur trees dark and high, I used to think their slender tops must brush against the sky, It was just a childish fantasy, but now it s not much joy To think I m further off from God than when I was a boy LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME Reflections IT IS WHAT IT IS BUT IT S NOT WHAT IT WAS For example Growing up in Sea Cliff I played both Little League baseball and CYO basketball. Rarely a starter, I usually found myself playing right field because that was the position the weakest players were sent. I also played PAL baseball and often started, mainly because only nine guys showed up for away games. Basketball was no different. I spent most of the games on the end of the bench, getting in when scores were lopsided. I think I scored four points all season when St. Boniface won the CYO championship in 7 th Grade. Some might say that I was born in the wrong era. Now there are rules in place where everyone on the team must play in every game. This point was dramatically emphasized in this year s Little League World Series. In the first round, the coach for Australia had his son in the on-deck circle in the bottom of the 5 th inning. The batter made an out, and the Australian team won after the sixth inning, so the son did not get a chance to bat. As a result, the coach was suspended for the entire World Series. He had to watch the team he guided for years from the stands. Do you think the son would feel worse for not getting into a game or because he was the reason his team lost its coach? Looking back, I know Little League, PAL, and CYO taught me there were people better than me in some areas, and that was a good lesson learned early. About the same time, the good Sisters of Mercy and my parents taught me about the gift of Grace and how God loves us all whether we get up to bat in the 5 th inning or not.
