The Altar Rose, Candles and the Bread and Wine will also be available. These items may be requested for the intentions of Living or Deceased. A Teaching Series on the Faith and The Catechism of the Catholic Church by Fr. Ethel How deep is your knowledge of the Catholic Faith? How much of an Apologist are you with regard to the Church? Are you ready to grow in your knowledge and understanding of the Church and her ecclesiological principles? Here comes an opportunity at our parish to come grow in your knowledge of the Faith as we learn together and get re-educated on the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The instructor of this class is Fr. Ethel Anarado. Our main text is The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Class will begin Monday, October 22, 2018 and run for 6 weeks ending on Monday, November 26, Class dates are: October, 22, 29 & November 5, 12, 19, and 26 Time: 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM Place: Room 257 in the Parish Center at St. Joseph s Parish in Babylon. You are invited to register at the Parish Office or call (631) Ext. 100 A Free Will Offering will be taken. ADORATION CHAPEL NEWS St. Joseph s Nocturnal Adoration Members will be praying in the Chapel on the First Friday of each month from 9pm to 10pm. St. Joseph s Rosary Society will meet on Wednesdays from 5pm to 6pm, with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, offering special prayers as they sing, praise the Lord, meditate on readings and adore the Blessed Sacrament. St. Joseph s Adorers will meet in the Chapel every Friday at 3pm for a Holy Hour honoring the Divine Mercy. We will be praying the Chaplet along with other prayers and hymns. All are welcome! Spiritual Adoption Prayer Program Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Joseph s announces an adoption program for young and old alike. The members of our parish family will soon have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived this month. Not all babies make it to birth. Many parents tragically experience the loss of a child to miscarriage or premature birth. And more than 3,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. These are the babies you are being asked to adopt simply by praying for him or her each day. You may adopt a child individually or as a family by signing up during the weekend of October 6th, Respect Life Sunday. Prayer pledges will be collected during Mass. A selection of prayer cards with prayers will be available. It is suggested that you name the child for whom you will be praying, which will remind you that, although you may never meet the child in this life, you truly are praying for a specific child who needs your prayers. Watch the bulletin for monthly reports describing your baby s development. In June we will celebrate the births of our spiritually adopted babies by collecting baby items which will be given to mothers in need of assistance. There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God have given you? 3

The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register at the Parish Center. If you have any questions, please contact JoAnn Bello at joannbello@optonline.net. 6 Sunday, October 14, 2018 Deacon s Corner A DISCIPLE MUST CONFESS JESUS We cannot be disciples or disciple anyone unless we confess Jesus. That confession must be a bold confession that builds a confidence in us and in turn builds the confidence in the person being discipled, enabling them to more readily accept the gospel of Jesus Christ. (It must not be an arrogant or overpowering boldness.) True discipleship cannot succeed in the face of denial of Jesus. In fact it turns the whole situation into a cult status. Discipleship on occasions results in division and rejection especially by family, relatives, friends and at times other Christians. To be a disciple of Jesus requires loyalty to Him, a far greater loyalty than to any other person on this planet. We must be in total submission to Him and Him alone before we can be in submission to our pastor, church, leadership or anyone else. This gives us a far greater and positive affect on those around us and to those that we disciple. When we are full of Jesus Christ we never go empty. When we are submitted to Jesus we become representatives of Jesus and a representative to the people He sent us to, especially as Christ is in us, the hope of glory. So if they receive us and the message that Jesus sent, they are in fact receiving Jesus and His message. Reflections A TIMELY REMEMBRANCE My recent strolling adventures around two local communities caused me to wonder about the word sidewalk. While the side part is okay, I often have difficult with some of the walks I am compelled to take. Disrepair is becoming rampant, some paths end mysteriously in the middle of the block, and, at least in rural areas, these byways are being trod less often. One aspect of sidewalk-hood which remains, however, is the etching initials in the soft concrete when no one is around. Though those who work laboriously to ensure the original pour is even and painstakingly endeavor so no outside materials invade their work, quite often words, dates, initials, or any combination thereof become a lasting impression. Recently a couple, who enjoy yard sales, followed signs to an address suddenly familiar to the husband. He curiously asked the owner if he could take a quick peek at the detached garage in the backyard. Upon arrival he showed his wife where two sets of initials surrounded by a heart and the date were carved in what was new concrete at the time. One set of initials was his and the other his long-gone high school sweetheart. Ironically, the date inscribed proved to be very special to the couple and caused them to wonder anew of God s plan for them. God speaks to us in many ways: in our hearts and minds and through our external senses. Regardless of from whence we receive His words, we must be open to hear what He has to say and thank Him for always been with us. Deacon John Chrysanthemum Ball News!
