We Worship. We Witness. We Celebrate the Sacraments Baptism Parents are requested to call the Parish Office at least two months before child s birth to make arrangements. New Parents Instruction Class will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 257. Baptism is celebrated every Sunday of the month at 1:45pm. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Anyone who wishes to join the Catholic Church should call the Parish Office. Reconciliation (Confession) Saturday 4:00 to 4:45pm in the Church or call the Parish Office for an appointment. Matrimony Couples are requested to call at least six months before the wedding for an appointment with a Priest or Deacon to set the date and make arrangements. No arrangements can be made by phone. Anointing of the Sick Fourth Saturday of the month at the 9:00am Mass or call the Parish Office. We Assemble for Prayer Rosary Every Monday at 8:20am we pray the Patriotic Rosary. Before the 9:00am Eucharist Tuesdays through Saturdays we pray the Rosary. Miraculous Medal Novena We pray this at the 7:45am & 9am Mass every Tuesday. Men s Spirituality Group: Witness and grow in Faith. Meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Church. Nocturnal Adoration A Holy Hour with the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the First Friday of each month, from 9:00pm to 10:00pm in the Church.

Thomas More Coogan, Administrator Dear Good Folks of St. Joe s, In this Sunday s Gospel the Lord s heart is seized with compassion for the people as they seem to Him to be like sheep without a shepherd. (Mk. 6:33) His concern for His flock has not lessened over the centuries and to this day He sends us shepherds in the form of our clergy. Bishops are in a unique way shepherds. In fact, part of the ordination ceremony for a bishop includes him being given a crozier - a hooked staff - that is not accidentally reminiscent of a shepherd s crook. If you have never actually witnessed the ordination of a bishop, this coming Tuesday (July 24th) at 2:00 PM you have a chance as our own vicar Bishop-elect Richard Henning will be elevated at Saint Agnes Cathedral. It will be televised on Telecare. In this Sunday s first reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, God promises to send His people good shepherds who will keep his people safe. In soon-to-be Bishop Henning, we see the Almighty doing just that. At your service and His, Fr. Tom Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Capital Campaign Gift Recognition St. Joseph s Church Centennial Campaign has ended. With the conclusion of the Campaign, a plan has commenced for the recognition of those donors who have completed their pledge of $3, or more. Guidelines for the five levels of Gift Recognition were given in the Centennial Campaign Booklet. If you were at one of those levels, a letter with an enclosed form was sent to you in May. Unfortunately, all forms were not returned by the deadline June 22. Please complete the form that was enclosed to reflect the way in which you would like the donation to be acknowledged. As soon as all the forms are returned, we will assemble the names under the designated Level of Pledge and send them to the engraver. They will in turn set them on the pages that will be displayed in a brass Memorial Book which will be mounted in the Church. 5 Sunday, July 22, 2018 Deacon s Corner ABRAHAM Old Testament Story of Faith Abraham is mentioned several times in the Bible for some of the great things he accomplished; but Romans 4 says that he was saved because of his faith and not because of his works. Hebrews 11, says that he followed God even though he was not sure where he was going. Abraham is known as a man of faith who faithfully followed the Lord. God gave Abraham the promise that the Redeemer would come through his family. Abraham and his wife, Sarah, were past child-bearing age when God gave them a child named Isaac. Even though God promised that Abraham s descendants would one day be a great nation, He asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son in Genesis 22. God told Abraham to take Isaac to a mountain to sacrifice him to the Lord. God never intended for Abraham to kill Isaac. This was merely a test to show to us the type of faith Abraham had. As we read the story of Abraham and Isaac, we are reminded that God is faithful and that we can place our trust in Him. With Barbara and John leaving Massachusetts to return permanently to Ireland, it would be a bittersweet few days. The original arrival date had to be changed when the Carly s grandfather, the last of his generation, passed away in New Mexico. Eventually they arrived with their two children, and all were set to have a great time on Long Island. The couples had been neighbors for years, and Tim and Carly were very supportive when Barbara and John lost their son after a long illness. In fact, last year when they came to Long Island, I wrote about an orange butterfly that suddenly appeared when the four adults were in the backyard. Barbara commented she often saw an orange butterfly back home and believed it was indeed the spirit of their departed son, Evan, a redhead. She explained how comforting it was to her to know that her son was still with them. On the evening before their company left for home, Carly mentioned that her grandfather left his great granddaughter, Molly, his wife s pearls and great granddaughter, Grace, the Bible that had been in the family since Families often use Bibles to record events and detail how it was passed from one family member to another. Barbara seemed very interested in the what might be written and asked Grace if she could see it. Among other things, Barbara read Dinah Hamilton gave the book to Isabella Gannan when she left England for America on April 16, But Barbara was more excited with what she found between the pages of II Chronicles. Sending a child to school with new and needed supplies instills a sense of pride along with the message that school is important. New school supplies can be expensive and unaffordable to a family with limited income. St Joseph s Back to School Program helps with supplies that families are unable to afford. If you are able to help a child, you can either donate supplies or buy a gift card from Target, CVS, or Walmart. Also, you can sponsor a child in need by calling Sigrid at ext School supplies can be dropped off at the Outreach Center on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm. You may also drop off your supplies at the Parish Center office. If you come between the hours of 9 am 9:30 am, you will need to call the office to enter the building: Please note: the Faith Formation Office will close for the summer beginning July 9 th. We place the children on a first come, first serve basis and each year we get a number of new families registering. Catechists and Hall Monitors are needed for next year please contact the Faith Formation Office if you are interested in volunteering: All volunteers who work with children must undergo a background check and take a Virtus Training course. New Family Registration if you would like to register a new student in the Faith Formation Program, please come to the office and bring the original baptismal certificate for each child you plan to register (even if your child was baptized here at St. Joseph) and a check or cash for the registration fee.
