We Worship. We Witness. We Celebrate the Sacraments Baptism Parents are requested to call the Parish Office at least two months before child s birth to make arrangements. New Parents Instruction Class will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 257. Baptism is celebrated every Sunday of the month at 1:45pm. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Anyone who wishes to join the Catholic Church should call the Parish Office. Reconciliation (Confession) Saturday 4:00 to 4:45pm in the Church or call the Parish Office for an appointment. Matrimony Couples are requested to call at least six months before the wedding for an appointment with a Priest or Deacon to set the date and make arrangements. No arrangements can be made by phone. Anointing of the Sick Fourth Saturday of the month at the 9:00am Mass or call the Parish Office. We Assemble for Prayer Rosary Every Monday at 8:20am we pray the Patriotic Rosary. Before the 9:00am Eucharist Tuesdays through Saturdays we pray the Rosary. Miraculous Medal Novena We pray this at the 7:45am & 9am Mass every Tuesday. Men s Spirituality Group: Witness and grow in Faith. Meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Church. Nocturnal Adoration A Holy Hour with the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the First Friday of each month, from 9:00pm to 10:00pm in the Church.

Thomas More Coogan, Administrator Dear Good Folks of Saint Joe s, In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus declares: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. (John 6:53-55) We understand His teaching to be on the critical importance of the Eucharist. I do not know if this parish gives itself enough credit for providing the celebration of Holy Mass more than 20 times in the course of each week. This is possible, of course, through the ministry of our good priests and deacons. But there are also scores of volunteers who serve in the various liturgical ministries of lectors, extraordinary ministers, servers, ushers and music. So many commit to faithful presence at an assigned liturgy that we could take them for granted. No small number have served with dedication for decades. Two in particular have been volunteering for and present to nearly EVERY liturgy these last months Nancy Conte and Linda Weinstock who serve as volunteer sacristans (among other positions) and set up for so many of our Masses throughout the entire week. If we take seriously Our Lord s words about the importance of receiving Holy Communion, we all have to be particularly grateful for so many in this wonderful parish, like Nancy and Linda and all the rest. Thank you all for your goodness. At your service and His, Fr Tom Little Rock Bible Study "James, Peter, and Jude: The Catholic Letters " The Little Rock Scripture Study has been a part of the St. Joseph s Adult Enrichment program for several years. The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register by September 10 th at the Parish Center. 5 Sunday, August 19, 2018 Deacon s Corner The Cost of Discipleship To be a disciple of Jesus there is a cost. The question is, are you willing to pay the cost? This is what Jesus is talking about in Mt 8: The answer to this question reveals the genuineness toward discipleship. The highest cost of all was paid by Jesus. He paid the cost throughout his earthly ministry and paid the ultimate cost at the end of it. However, there is still a cost for us; are we prepared to pay the price? Some of the costs to bear in mind are: time, money, effort, talents, stepping out of our comfort zone, embracing and or loving the unlovable, persecution, ridicule, rejection, frustration, attacks of the enemy and in some cases, like Jesus, our very lives. Our commitment must be instant, never wavering, not looking back but looking forward through the eyes and heart of Jesus who is within us. Will you willingly pay the price as you meet the cost as you reach out to the saved and the unsaved alike? This is not an ego trip. As you pay the price you will realize that God gives value for the money. Deacon John Gennesaret Retreat Gennesaret Retreat for those facing serious illness. A retreat especially designed for persons who live with a serious illness is planned for the weekend of September 21 st, 22 nd & 23 rd, 2018 at Montfort Spirituality Center in Bay Shore, NY. This retreat offers a respite, a quiet time, an oasis, to enable one to continue the journey. The retreat focuses on God s love, His forgiveness, and His faithfulness. Reflections ANSWERED PRAYERS Have you ever thought our prayers are not heard? At our monthly Ancient Order of Hibernians meeting, our closing prayer includes three Hail Marys for vocations. I often wonder if it is working, because this year only one man was ordained into the priesthood in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, and I am not sure how many are now in the seminary. We know the priestly population of our diocese is slowly declining, so I sometimes wonder if our AOH prayer is working. It is. Perhaps not locally, but I do know nine men were ordained as Dominican priests this year, and there are 29 new Jesuits. What surprised me more, however, was to learn Laura Makin, a lass with LI roots, will soon enter the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia of Nashville, TN. She will be one of 18 postulants in an order which has experienced tremendous growth in recent years. The median age of the community is 36 with 58% of the sisters being under the age of 40! I sense the traditional values of the order have appealed to these young women as they joyfully embrace a life of serving God in a consecrated life. This is just one example of how our prayers always work. We may not see immediate results or those we like, but this does not mean our prayers are not being heard. Faith in God is the cornerstone of being a Catholic. Our trust in Him must be deep rooted like the seeds of the Good Sower. This can be achieved by an active prayer life which will help us realize, indeed, God answers each and every prayer. Capital Campaign Gift Recognition LAST CALL FOR FORMS TO BE RETURNED St. Joseph s Church Centennial Campaign has ended. With the conclusion of the Campaign, a plan has commenced for the recognition of those donors who have completed their pledge of $3, or more. Guidelines for the five levels of Gift Recognition were given in the Centennial Campaign Booklet. If you were at one of those levels, a letter with an enclosed form was sent to you in May. Unfortunately, all forms were not returned by the deadline June 22. Please complete the form that was mailed to reflect the way in which you would like your donation to be acknowledged. We are waiting for the return of all forms so we can assemble the names under the designated Level of Pledge and send them to the engraver. They will in turn set them on the pages that will be displayed in a brass Memorial Book which will be mounted in the Church. You may find all the information in our handbook on the website. The Faith Formation Office will be closed for the summer beginning Monday, July 3 9th and will reopen on Monday, August 27 9am. There is a cart outside the Faith Formation Office with new registration and re-registration forms for those who still need to register and for any correspondence you may need to leave. Claire will be in at least once a week to return any messages and to update registrations. You may either leave a note on the pad in the hallway or leave a message on the FF answering machine. Donations of televisions and dvd players are needed for the faith formation classrooms. Catechetical Sunday is September 16 th and we will be having a second collection at all the Masses to help the Faith Formation Program. The annual registration fee is $145 for one child, $210 for two children and $265 for three or more.
