New Parents Instruction Class will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 7:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 257. Baptism is celebrated every Sunday of the month at 1:45pm. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Anyone who wishes to join the Catholic Church should call the Parish Office. Reconciliation (Confession) Saturday 4:00 to 4:45pm in the Church or call the Parish Office for an appointment. Matrimony Couples are requested to call at least six months before the wedding for an appointment with a Priest or Deacon to set the date and make arrangements. No arrangements can be made by phone. Anointing of the Sick Fourth Saturday of the month at the 9:00am Mass or call the Parish Office. We Assemble for Prayer Rosary Every Monday at 8:20am we pray the Patriotic Rosary. Before the 9:00am Eucharist Tuesdays through Saturdays we pray the Rosary. Miraculous Medal Novena We pray this at the 7:45am & 9am Mass every Tuesday. Men s Spirituality Group: Witness and grow in Faith. Meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Church. Nocturnal Adoration A Holy Hour with the Blessed Sacrament is offered on the First Friday of each month, from 9:00pm to 10:00pm in the Church.

3 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time MASS BOOK OPENING The 2019 Mass Book will be opened for the full 2019 year on Monday, October 15th in the O Connell Room from 10am - 2pm. The Altar Rose, Candles and the Bread and Wine will also be available. These items may be requested for the intentions of the living or deceased. There will be a Holy Hour with Rosary for Life and Adoration in the Adoration Chapel on Wednesday, October 3rd, from 5 to 6pm. All are invited to participate. 4 Sunday, September 23, 2018 VIRTUS TRAINING Tuesday, September 25th There will be two classes: 9:30 am 7:00 pm In the O Connell Room. For more information contact: Kathy Knott Our first meeting for the season will be Saturday, October 6th, after the 9am Mass. The meeting will be held in the O Connell Room and refreshments will be served. It is a wonderful time to meet our new ministers, renew our friendships, and get to know ministers who serve at other Masses. Whether you serve at weekday Masses, funeral Masses, Sunday Masses or visit the nursing homes and homebound, all EM s are invited to attend. At the meeting updated guidelines will be presented and you will be given a packet of information including the updated Mass schedule and updated telephone contact list. This information will NOT be mailed to you, therefore, we strongly urge you to come to the meeting. Little Rock Bible Study "James, Peter, and Jude: The Catholic Letters " The Little Rock Scripture Study has been a part of the St. Joseph s Adult Enrichment program for several years. The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register at the Parish Center. 6 Sunday, September 23, 2018 Deacon s Corner BE SERVANTS TO ONE ANOTHER When they got back home to Capernaum, Jesus began to ask them what they had been discussing along the way. At this point, an awkward silence fell on the group. No one wanted to answer. They were embarrassed, because they had been arguing about who was the most important. Isn t that incredible? During the time when Jesus was preparing himself and trying to prepare them for his death on the cross, they were arguing over the top job in the kingdom. This is a clear example of competitive instincts gone wrong. You recall how Jesus responded. He might have gotten angry, but he did not. Instead, he sat down, gathered them all around him and taught them a lesson on Christian competition. He said, If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the last of all and the servant of all. Then he pulled a little boy over to himself, put his arms around him and said: Whoever welcomes a child such as this, welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me, welcomes him that sent me. What a wonderful lesson in humility. The way to God is through Christ, and the way to Christ is through a helpless child. So the real field of rivalry for a Christian is not power, not prestige, not money, not fame. It is a competition of service. We are to strive for excellence in usefulness. And the competition is not so much with each other as it is with ourselves. We should not be content with mediocre Christianity. Every one of us should seek to become the best servant, the best helper of humanity, that we can possibly be. Our role model, of course, is Christ. He is the Incarnation of God s standard for ordinary people like you and me. His primary claim to greatness is usefulness. He was the willing servant of anyone who needed him. That kind of greatness is within reach of all of us. And over the long haul, It is the only kind that really matters. RECEIVE ME AND THE ONEWHO SENT ME Reflections PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER Interesting things happen when one is on vacation and torrential rains limit activities. Though I am in a family which is quite fond of and astute in the province of jig saw puzzles, my impatience, lack of dexterity, and my general disinterest in such a pursuit made me very reluctant to participate when the rains were at their heaviest. Being a team player at heart, however, I found myself at the table in the recreation room sorting these unusually shaped pieces by color. At least, I thought, I could do that. Soon the 500-piece picture of a shoreline at dusk began to take shape. The others obviously knew what they were doing as pieces start to fit together. There was an adage within the puzzle, so I concentrated on getting the words to fit, since, conceptionally, this would be the least challenging for me. With roughly a quarter of the puzzle completed, the group called it a day all except me. I would not leave until I had all the words together. The weather was great the next day, so family members found different outdoor activities to pursue. Not me. Suddenly I found a new talent (though a very small one) to develop. How often do we find ourselves in situations that call on us to do something in which we have no interest? Such Grace-filled moments are God s way of inviting us to cultivate a capacity within us. The more skills we have, the more we will be able to help ourselves and to help others. We might not see an immediate connection immediately, but we should know God will ask us to use all our skills at some point in our lives. Let s be ready.
