The selected study for this Fall covers four New Testament letters traditionally known as the Catholic Letters because each is written to strengthen Christian communities scattered across a wide region of the Roman Empire rather than a specific Christian community. Participants will discover that they contain profound differences as well as intriguing similarities. James is a work of wisdom literature, expounding on the themes of faith and good works, true wisdom, and the need for the rich to care for the poor. First Peter resembles a sermon on baptism. It is filled with moral exhortations about living out one's baptismal promises in a properly upright, faith-filled manner, especially in the face of suffering and persecution. Second Peter contains strong warnings and exhortations to avoid false teachings to maintain proper ethical conduct while awaiting the second coming of Jesus Christ. It shares much of its content with Jude, because of which, Jude is studied in conjunction with Second Peter. This study has 7 sessions, incorporating an introductory session and 6 lessons, beginning on Thursday October 4 th in the O Connell Room at 7:30 pm 9:00 pm. Session dates are Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8, & 15. The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of the study guide and CD wrap-up lecture. Please register at the Parish Center. If you have any questions, please contact JoAnn Bello at joannbello@optonline.net. 6 Sunday, October 21, 2018 Deacon s Corner TAKE UP YOUR CROSS (MARK 10:35-45) How totally insensitive even Christian people can be. Jesus is walking ahead alone struggling with the Messianic reality of what it means to be The Suffering Servant. Misreading his struggling solitude, for plans of the victory celebration, James and John decide it is time to make their request. At the most inopportune moment, they reveal that they have totally misunderstood the meaning of the mission. They have not yet caught the truth about the nature of Messiahship. They are so wrapped up in their own need to be somebody, they are not listening as Jesus explains their mission. It s a common mistake. Anyone who has never made such a blunder would be welcome to throw the first stone. All of us have this need to be seen as someone important. The problem is not in having the need. The problem occurs in trying to fill the need in an invalid way. This passage makes clear that Jesus accepts their quest for identity. Then he seeks to redirect it: Whoever would be great among you, must be your servant.the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom. He helps us to focus our quest to be somebody where it needs focusing. Had they realized that the places at his left and right when he came into his glory were crosses, not honored seats on a dais, would they have been so eager to share his pilgrimage? The kind of greatness God wants for us is to be passionately involved, genuinely invested in caring about people, and doing our best to serve them. LOVE ONE ANOTHER Reflections NO ONE EVER BECAME POOR BY GIVING Anne Frank When I enter any Catholic Church for whatever reason, the first thing I usually do is find the parish bulletin. I turn the pages until I see the place where the prior week s offerings is listed. Over the years, I have seen staggering figures ranging from $427 in a small parish in Vermont to over $ 45,000 in a church in Florida. There is a relatively large range among the 132 parishes on Long Island. My amateur detective work found an eastern parish with a weekly amount of $4,790 and one close to the western border with $34,240. I got the sense from perusing each bulletin that each parish even the ones with the highest weekly collections are still facing some difficult financial times. We often forget the many things parishes do for people. Some of us think of primarily Sunday and weekday Mass, an occasional funeral, and weddings mostly in the summer. We forget the many temporal and spiritual ministries which serve a variety of needs. When Stewardship was introduced to the parish nearly 25 years ago, I attended a workshop on Treasure. I remember distinctly the presenter informing us how Catholics traditionally are the least generous donors to their faith. A recent study determined the Catholic household weekly offering is $10. That would be fine for St. Joseph Parish if every household attended Mass. We know this is not the case. We also know that 75% of what is given each week comes from less than 30% of those who donate. We must do better. Let us ask for God s Grace as we ponder the words of Anne Frank. Deacon Mike Please join us for An Informative Evening with Father Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, DCSW Founder of Hope House Ministries & Director of Hope Academy, A Long Term Residential Treatment Center for Addiction Tuesday, November 13 th At 7:00 pm In Nolan Hall Father Francis will discuss the struggles and challenges that our kids are facing today, and the growing Opiod crisis.
