3 SACRAMENTS & WORSHIP SACRAMENTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Sacrament of Baptism Baptisms are held on the First Sunday during the 10am Mass at HR Third Sunday during the11:30am Mass at SJ Please call the parish office for further information. Sacrament of First Communion Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or the parish school. This is a two-year program. Sacrament of Confirmation A two-year program for high school teens. Apply through the Life Teen office: hrsjlifeteen@gmail.com Sacrament of Matrimony Please contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament! Holy Orders/Religious Orders Anyone interested in a religious life as a priest, deacon, or sister please contact Father Ed: fred@hr-sjcatholic.org. Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. 4 WORSHIP & CELEBRATING TRADITIONS Environment Ministry Volunteer Opportunities This ministry has the pleasure of decorating and adorning both churches (inside and outside) for all of the special Liturgies throughout the Church Calendar Year. This is our busy season coming up with All Souls Requiem Mass, Advent and Christmas; in 2018, our busy time will be Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. These are just the big ones! With two churches to adorn in a very short time span, it is critical that we have a staff of volunteers who will commit to helping. These opportunities are: Seamstress Love to sew? This is the ministry for you. We need to have new covers made for some of the statues; some current coverings are in need of repair as well as various items used in the celebration of the Mass. You will be supplied with the necessary fabrics for new projects you just need a sewing machine and some free time. Handyman We have several wooden items that are in need of an uplift. Assist in setting up the Christmas and Easter scenes as well as assisting in the hanging of banners and other decorations. Two-Day Assistance is especially needed, at both churches, before and after Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter week. St James requires the taking down and putting up of the Crucifix as it is changed out depending upon the Liturgy; assembly of several very large Christmas trees and lots more. Creative Assistance is needed in setting up and placing of flowers and other decorations. If you would like to learn how to make bows, we can teach you! Stay tuned for more on this! CLW is an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word offered for ages 5 through 3rd grade at the 8:30am Mass. No pre-registration is necessary. All children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Just before the Liturgy of the Word begins for the assembly, these children are invited to go with the catechist to the Church Sacristy, located behind the altar at St James. During this special time, the volunteer teacher leads the children through prayers, songs and readings that are simplified for children. Fr. Catholic Traditions Explained Why do we celebrate Mary in both the months of May and October? Pope Pius XII solidified May as a particularly Marian month when he instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary (May 31) as part of the Marian Year he proclaimed in May 31 is now the feast of the Visitation of Mary. The month of May as a Marian month was further affirmed by Mary s first apparition at Fatima (May 13, 1917). The decision to designate October as the month of the Rosary stems from the Church s desire to extend its thanksgiving to Our Lady for victory in the Battle of Lepanto from one Sunday to a whole month. In addition, when Our Lady appeared in Fatima in May 1917, she identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary. Get your recipes out and heat up that stove! Make sure children are using height-appropriate swings, slides and ladders. Equipment should be mounted on shock-absorbent materials and not hard surfaces, and children should be able to move easily between equipment. 6 OUR COMMUNITY PRAY FOR A CURE MASS The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will host the Pray for a Cure Mass during Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer survivors and those affected by cancer are invited to gather at the Cathedral on October 7th at 12:30pm to pray for a cure. Deacon Mark Race and his wife Vickie Race of St. Bernadette Church in South Los Angeles started the Mass after Vickie was diagnosed with breast cancer about 12 years ago and underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Together with the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, they launched the annual Mass and formed the Faith, Hope and Charity cancer ministry, which offers support groups, retreats and individual counseling. Our nation is in great need of public prayer, repentance and conversion. In the historic year of the Fatima Centennial ( ), we ask God to save America through the Rosary of His Most Holy Mother.
