PARENTS, RAISE A TIMOTHY; YOUNG PEOPLE, BE A TIMOTHY! Introduction: A. Biblical Heroes Provide Great Learning Lessons. B. Tonight We Study The Life Of Timothy. C. I Urge Parents To Learn Lessons About Spiritual Parenting From This Study; I Challenge Young People To Look At This Man As A GREAT Person To Imitate!!! I. (Slide #2) Facts About Timothy s Life. A. ( ) He Was Directed Spiritually By His Godly Grandmother And Mother! 1. His grandmother and mother were Christians; they taught him about God. a. II Tim. 1:5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. b. II Tim. 3:14,15 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. c. (Slide #3) They started early in his life. d. (Slide #4) They continued to teach as he matured and grew. 2. His father seems to have been an unbeliever. B. (Slide #5) Paul First Met Him At Lystra At The Beginning Of The Second Missionary Journey. 1
1. Ac. 16:1 Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. 2. Paul was quickly drawn to this young man. C. ( ) He Was WELL-RESPECTED By Christians Of All Ages! 1. Ac. 16:2 He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. 2. This speaks volumes about the faith he had and the life he lives. D. (Slide #6) He Was A Young Man Willing To Do Whatever He Could To Influence Others For Christ. 1. (Slide #7) Ac. 16:3 Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek. 2. This was undoubtedly a very uncomfortable procedure; however, Timothy was willing to endure circumcision as an adult because he wanted to be an accepted and influential proclaimer of the Gospel. E. (Slide #8) He Was Paul s Trusted And Loyal Son In The Faith. 1. Paul used this endearing phrase to describe him several times: a. I Cor. 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. b. I Tim. 1:1,2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. c. I Tim. 1:18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, d. II Tim. 1:1,2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 2. I Cor. 16:10 Now if Timothy comes, see that he may be with you without fear; for he does the work of the Lord, as I also do. 3. I Thess. 3:1,2 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, 2 and sent Timothy, our brother and 2
minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, 4. NO WONDER Paul trusted Timothy! Phil. 2:19-23 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. 20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. 23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. 5. Late in his life Paul again cited Timothy s faith. I Tim. 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 6. You see HOW MUCH Paul trusted him: a. Paul left him at Berea -- Ac. 17:14 Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. (They soon met him in Athens Ac. 17:15; 18:5) b. Paul later sent Timothy to Macedonia again. Ac. 19:22 So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time. c. Timothy and other brethren accompanied Paul to Asia. Ac. 20:1-4 After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia. 2 Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece 3 and stayed three months. And when the Jews plotted against him as he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia. 4 And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia--also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. d. He preached TO THE Corinthians: 1. I Cor. 4:17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. 2. II Cor. 1:19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us--by me, Silvanus, and Timothy--was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. e. Paul sent him to the Philippians: 1. Phil. 2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. 2. Phil. 2:23 Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. f. Paul sent him to the Thessalonians (in Macedonia): 1. I Thess. 3:1,2 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, 2 and sent Timothy, our 3
brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, 2. I Thess. 3:6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you. g. Left by Paul at Ephesus: I Tim. 1:3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 7. And when they were apart, Paul longed to have Timothy near him: II Tim. 1:2-4 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, E. ( ) Timothy Was Confined With Paul. 1. Philemon 1:1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, 2. Heb. 13:23 Know that our brother Timothy has been set free, with whom I shall see you if he comes shortly. F. (Slide #9) When Paul, By Inspiration Of The Holy Spirit Wrote Churches, He Addressed Them From Himself And Timothy! Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:1,2; I Thess. 1:1; II Thess. 2:1; Philemon 1:1 G. ( ) Timothy Was Blessed By A Miraculous Gift Received Through Paul s Hands! 1. I Tim. 4:14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership. 2. II Tim. 1:6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. II. (Slide #10) Charges Paul Gave Timothy. A. (Slide #11) He Taught Him Through The Years! B. (Slide #12) Paul Wrote Him Two Letters: 4
1. I Tim. 1:1,2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 2. II Tim. 1:1,2 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, 2 To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3. Observe those two precious statements -- a true son in the faith; a beloved son. C. ( ) Charges In I Timothy: 1. Urge people to love Truth, NOT fables (false doctrine)! I Tim. 1: You be genuine spiritually -- inside out!!! I Tim. 1:5 3. Oppose false doctrine; promote sound doctrine. I Tim. 1: Wage a good warfare; having faith and a good conscience. I Tim. 1: Pray for rulers so Christians may live a peaceable life! I Tim. 2: Men must be holy rulers; women must observe their roles of submission. I Tim. 2: Teach the qualifications of elders, deacons, and their wives. I Tim. 3: Behave like a young man whose conduct honors the Church, the pillar and ground of the Truth, and the Lord Jesus whom we serve! I Tim. 3: Realize that people will depart from the faith, teaching restrictions that Christ never taught! I Tim. 4: Instruct brethren in the faith; reject fables; and exercise yourself to godliness. I Tim. 4: Be an example of the believers! I Tim. 4: Be devout; use the gift God has given you; grow! I Tim. 4:13-16 Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all. 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. 15, Be respectful to all -- older men, older women, widows, and elders. I Tim. 5:1-19. At the same time, rebuke sinners! I Tim. 5:20 5
14. Do not be prejudiced; do not be hasty; take care of yourself; do good because man s good or evil will be revealed in the Judgment. I Tim. 5: Urge slaves to respect their masters and to live in a way that glorifies God. I Tim. 6:1,2 16. Seek godliness and a godly heart; avoid a proud, obstinate heart. I Tim. 6:3-6. Seek godliness instead of being consumed by the love of money and riches. I Tim. 6: Fight the good fight of faith! I Tim. 6: Life a blameless life until the Lord returns! I Tim. 6: Urge the rich to be rich in good works. I Tim. 6: Guard the Gospel that has been put in your trust; avoid contradiction that cause people to leave the faith! I Tim. 6:20-21 C. ( ) Charges In II Timothy: 1. Be revived; use the gift you received by my (Paul s) hands; never be ashamed of your faith and of your Lord! 1: Hold fast to the sound words (Truth), be loyal and dependable like Onesiphorus has been to me. 1: Be strong; be a mentor and trainer of others; endure hardship as a soldier or an athlete! 2: Be willing to suffer so you will receive the reward that awaits you. 2: Do not give yourself to fables and false teachings which produce strife; be determined to be a loyal worker for the Lord! 2: Be a vessel of honor in the Lord s house! 2: Avoid foolish disputes and quarrels; be gentle, but correct those who oppose the Truth in hopes that they will come to their senses and leave the snare of the Devil! 2: Realize that people are going to be in love with themselves and rebellious against God; amazingly at the same time they will convince themselves that they are godly! 3:1-9 6
9. Remain loyal to the Scriptures; as I have been and am now being persecuted, you will be persecuted too. Continue to be loyal to what you know! 3: Preach the Word whether it is accepted or not; do the work of an evangelist. 4: Paul mentions his eminent death and urges Timothy to come to him quickly. 4:7-22 III.
