1 Service of Worship Sixth Sunday after Pentecost June 26, 2016 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Endless Road, by Margret Hofheinz-Döring, ( ) This morning Jesus has challenging words to those who wish to follow him. In response to various people saying they will follow the Lord wherever he goes, Jesus tells them that the Son of Man has no place to lay his head, and that nothing else can take priority over the work of the Kingdom. The Apostle Paul describes the outworkings of a Jesuscentered life, both in the rejection of evil, and the cultivation of the fruit of the Spirit.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following Communion, a service of prayer for healing will be held in the same location. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. Sunday morning parking will continue to be free until 1:30 p.m. but will require each driver to take a ticket upon entry to the garage and to authenticate it at a pay station available on each pedestrian-entry floor (levels 2 and 3) prior to exiting the garage. Please plan to arrive early on upcoming Sundays as our community becomes acquainted with the new system. For those who worship regularly at the Chapel, free QR code cards will be available to allow Sunday morning entry and exit. Cards are available at the attendant s desk in the nave near the main entrance of the Chapel. If you plan to stay past 1:30 p.m. and do not have a Duke parking permit then please park on levels 4 and 5. Your ticket upon arrival/ QR code card will ensure free parking up until 1:30 p.m. You will then have to pay the difference after that time at the pay station on level 3 before you exit.

Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for an emergency fund for disaster and recovery support for communities in our world that are affected by unexpected and sudden disasters (natural or otherwise). Your generosity enables the Chapel to respond quickly with financial support in times of acute crisis. Choral Evensong Next Sunday, July 3, at 4 p.m., the Carolina Course of the Royal School of Church Music will present their closing Choral Evensong in Duke Chapel. Dr. Michael Velting from Christ Church Cathedral, Nashville, TN, will serve as music director, and Colin Lynch from Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston, MA, will serve as course organist. Seats will be available in the nave. Today s Guest Musician Timothy W. Holley is Associate Professor of Music at North Carolina Central University. He has collaborated with the Mallarmé Chamber Players and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra since His doctoral dissertation focused on the cello music of African American composers, and his activities have continued in the study and performance of African American concert music. New Album Chapel Organist Christopher Jacobson has released a new album The Aeolian Organ at Duke University Chapel, which features the Chapel s Kathleen Upton Byrns McClendon Organ. The recording, published by the Dutch classical music label Pentatone, includes symphonic compositions transcribed for organ, such as Jean Sibelius s Finlandia, as well as popular tunes including Londonderry Air, best known as the tune to Danny Boy. Archives Exhibit An exhibit focusing on the history and legacy of Duke University Chapel is on display in the Chappell Family Gallery near the entrance of Perkins Library. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Summer Classes Three Sunday morning classes are available from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Classes are held in the lowest level of Duke Divinity School, Westbrook Building. Bible Study on the Gospel of John: For youth and adults in 0013 Westbrook. Lectionary Bible Study A study of the lectionary readings is held on the first Friday of the month at The Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Rd. The study will next meet on Friday, July 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the library conference room, located near the main entrance. All are welcome to attend. Kindness with A Serving of Food Volunteers are needed to assist with the Loaves and Fishes ministry, which provides meals to members and friends during times of illness, grief, or the welcoming of a new baby. Meals, which may be either home-made or purchased, do not need to be elaborate; they need only to be served with love. The Duke University Class of 2020 Common Experience summer reading book, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, will be the focus. The book is a memoir centered on social justice, equality, and the quest for innocence. Two sessions will be available: one on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and the other on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Both will meet at Carol Gregg s home. Save the Date Please save the date of Sunday, July 17, for a picnic at Piney Wood Park in Durham. Back Pew Collection Sundays, July 10 and 17, the Mission Committee will be collecting clothing for the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry, which provides physical and spiritual support to North Carolina Farmworkers. The ministry currently needs new or used lightweight pants, lightweight long-sleeved shirts, hats, work gloves, sunscreen and small sizes of men s toiletries. Donations may be left in the bins on the back pew; financial contributions may be given to the Congregation at Duke Chapel with Farmworker Ministry noted on the memo line. FMF Shelter Dinner Families Moving Forward requests assistance providing meals for its residents. The Congregation, in partnership with two other congregations, will provide meals on a quarterly basis. Volunteers are needed to assist with dinners on Monday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 13.
