1 Service of Worship Third Sunday in Lent February 28, 2016, Page Auditorium Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Ad manus (To the Hands), by Robyn Sand Anderson. Today s Scripture readings point to the necessity of repentance, and the promise of God s everlasting covenant. Isaiah calls us to abandon the scarcity of sin, and embrace the abundance of the Lord s righteousness. Paul teaches the Corinthian church and us to learn from Israel s history and trust in God s faithfulness, while in Luke s Gospel Jesus urges us to turn to him. The third piece in our Lenten Membra Jesu nostri series (pictured above) is entitled To the Hands. Jesus hands were cruelly pierced for our sins, and as he chose to be bound to the cross for us, so we are invited to be released through the asking of God s forgiveness.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in Page Auditorium by the seats at the front left of the stage, in front of the organ. Immediately following Communion, a service of prayer for healing will be held in the same location. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. During the prelude the congregation is asked to remain prayerfully or meditatively silent. The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please utilize the nursery in the Box Office on the second floor of Page. Yi Ying is a PathWays Chapel Scholar and has been part of Asian Intervarsity Christian Fellowship since entering Duke. She engages in interreligious dialogue as a co-president of Duke VIA (Voices for Interfaith Action) and enjoys dancing the Lindy hop with Duke Swing. After graduation, Yi Ying will return to Singapore to work in the public sector. She is immensely grateful for the kindness shown by family, friends, the Duke Chapel staff, and City Well Methodist Church. Chapel Announcements No Flowers in Lent Flowers (and Alleluias!) are removed from the liturgy during Lent; both will return with a burst of joy on Easter Day. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support human service organizations in the greater Durham area. These nonprofit organizations are identified to receive funds by a panel of Congregation members, Friends of Duke Chapel, and students. The grantmaking process not only benefits people in need but also seeks to introduce students to faithful stewardship and community development. Jazz Vespers This semester s Jazz Vespers worship service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, in the Nelson Music Room on Duke s East Campus. It combines the form of the traditional evening vespers service with the musical improvisation of jazz.

Swing a Hammer on Saturday Volunteers are needed to help build the Habitat house at 1113 Spruce Street in Durham on Saturday mornings, March 5 and April 16. Lectionary Bible Studies The Lectionary Bible Studies will next meet on Wednesday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregation office at Northgate and Friday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m. at The Forest at Duke, Serenity Place (the Chapel). The focus will be Joshua 5:9-12. New participants are welcome at either study. 42 nd Annual CROP Walk The CROP Walk, which raises money to fight hunger, will begin at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 20, on the Chapel Quad. The 4.8 mile walk is suitable for walking, jogging, or running. Please join or support the Congregation s team by way of www. crophungerwalk.org/durhamnc or by calling the Congregation office. Back Pew Collection Open Table Ministries, which serves homeless men and women in downtown Durham, is currently in need of new or used T-shirts, new underwear, and new socks. Donations of these items may be placed in the bin in the lower level lobby of Page Auditorium on Sundays, March 13 and 20. Young Adult Dinner Young adults are welcome to join a dinner fellowship on Friday, March 4, at 6:00 p.m. at Pop s Backdoor, 3710 Shannon Rd., Durham. All are welcome.
