1 Service of Worship Third Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Supper at Emmaus, by He Qi, 2001 In today s Gospel passage, the risen Jesus makes a mysterious appearance to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Jesus walks with the disciples, who do not recognize him. After recounting how the entire story of scripture points towards him as the risen Messiah, Jesus makes himself known to them in the breaking of bread before vanishing. As the psalmist extols God for meeting him in his place of brokenness, so too does the risen Christ long to meet us where we are broken.

2 The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. On this Communion Sunday, families with children are invited to sit up front, so they can better observe The Great Thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Nothing But Nets Drive The Congregation at Duke Chapel Youth are sponsoring a fund and awareness raising drive for Nothing But Nets, a UN Foundation campaign focused on preventing malaria cases by providing bed nets for children and families. Visit the table on the lawn following worship to learn more. Learning the Liturgy of the Chapel God s word has been proclaimed and the church has responded. We recognize the goodness and blessedness of Jesus presence with us, and we can t help but give thanks. At the Chapel, we give thanks through our offerings, which are acts of response and thanksgiving. We give praise through the doxology a sung prayer in adoration of our God. And we offer prayers of gratitude that conclude with the prayer Jesus taught his disciples. The prayer of thanksgiving is written thinking of God s glory and the gracious invitation to be joined with Christ through the Spirit. With God s abundance in view, we cannot help but see our lives in the light of grace and remember Jesus activity and presence among us. In this holy remembering, we reflect back to God what was God s all along: glory.
