1 Service of Worship Fifth Sunday after Epiphany February 5, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Homeless Man of 12 Years in Krakow, by Lukasz Dunikowski This morning s Scripture readings describe the moral mandate given to followers of Jesus. The Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah to condemn moral hypocrisy and to teach the true fasting that comes from a repentant heart. True fasting leads to feeding the hungry and caring for the vulnerable, while allowing the living waters of God s grace to repair what has been broken. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus urges us to righteousness that gives glory to our heavenly Father. He makes the astonishing claim that he has come to fulfill God s moral law, calling us to faithful obedience to his word.

Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive Communion. Wine is used for Communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Samuel Hammond Learning the Liturgy of the Chapel Each Sunday, we are offered the great grace of gathering around the banquet table of our Lord. Whether in the main sanctuary or in Memorial Chapel, our church shares in the feast of thanksgiving the Eucharist. We meet at the table to remember Jesus death for us, to receive grace anew, and to encounter Jesus in the ordinary stuff of life: bread and wine. In this meal by the Holy Spirit, the Father re-members us and makes us one with Christ and with the saints of the past, present, and future. What we consume at the table consumes us, so we become what we eat and are joined into the communion of the Triune God.

Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be given to the Chapel s Annual Fund for Mission and Ministry. Interfaith Art Exhibit The Beyond Bridges interfaith, visual art exhibition is on display in the Chapel s nave this February. All are invited to attend a public discussion on the exhibit and reception with the curator this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel. The exhibit showcases 21 works by Arab, Persian, and Jewish contemporary artists from countries of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish backgrounds. Its theme is what bridges people to one another, as well as what the three faiths of the artists hold in common across their different creeds and cultures. Finding Sanctuary Speaker Series Dr. Diya Abdo, chair of the English and Creative Writing Department at Guilford College, believes private colleges and universities can play a pivotal role in housing and resettling refugees. On Tuesday, February 7, at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Abdo will speak at the Chapel about Every Campus a Refuge, an initiative which calls on colleges and universities around the world to assist in resettlement by hosting one refugee family on campus. The talk is the first in the Chapel s semester-long Finding Sanctuary speaker series. Jazz Vespers with Cory Henry A Jazz Vespers worship service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, combines the form of traditional evening vespers with a time of open prayer and the music of Grammy Award-winning keyboardist Cory Henry. Henry s musical roots are in gospel, jazz and soul, and his instrument of choice is the Hammond B-3 organ. The service will be led by Chapel Dean Luke A. Powery and includes Scripture, a literary reading, and three prayer stations. The Chapel s C. Eric Lincoln Minister, Joshua Lazard, is the service s liturgist. This year there will be a diverse program of music as part of the Chapel s Year of Celebration. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Christian Education Classes Classes for all are offered every Sunday at 9:45 a.m. and will conclude in time for worship. All classes are held in the lowest level of the Westbrook (WB) building with refreshments and fellowship beginning at 9:30 a.m. Classes are: Wee Praise: For ages 0 3 with parents or caregivers in 0011 WB. Godly Play: For ages 4 through 5th graders in 0050 Langford. Youth Sunday School: For youth in 6th 12th grade in 0013 WB. Corinthians Bible Study: For adults in 0015 WB. Adult Forum: On Feb 12, The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, Dean of Duke Chapel will present A Conversation about Preaching and Politics in 0012 WB. Fellowship Lunch Today Worshipers are invited to gather for lunch in the West Union, which is a short walk from the Chapel and features many food vendors. Participants will select and purchase their own food, then congregate for fellowship. Members of the Fellowship Committee will be on hand to direct people to and within the West Union. Second Wednesday Lunch An informal get-to-know-you-better lunch group will be at Parizade, 2200 West Main Street, Durham, at noon on Wednesday, February 8. This is an agenda-free chance to visit and get to know others. Contact the Congregation office or if you plan to attend. The End of the World A half-day winter retreat, addressing the question of Does Apocalyptic Thought Tell Us About the End of the World?, will be led by Dr. James Efird, professor emeritus of Duke Divinity School. The retreat will be held on Saturday, February 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Durham. The fee of $10 covers the cost of a catered lunch. All youth and adults are welcome to attend. Please register by contacting the Congregation office by February 6. Back Pew Collection Meals on Wheels welcomes donations of individual portions of canned goods for use in their weekend meals program. Please bring products such as Ensure, unsweetened fruit cups, tuna, peanut butter crackers, low sodium soups with pop tops, or canned meals with pop tops on Sunday, February 12 or 19. Saturday Service Project On Saturday, February 25, at 10:00 a.m., volunteers are needed to make sandwiches for homebound adults. Donations of sandwich-making supplies are needed, including whole wheat and white breads, turkey lunchmeat, yellow mustard, creamy peanut butter, and grape or strawberry jelly. Volunteers will meet at Meals on Wheels of Durham, 2522 Ross Rd. Donations may be brought to the Chapel or to Meals on Wheels. Please contact the Congregation office for more information.
