1 Service of Worship Baptism of Our Lord Sunday January 11, 2015 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Baptism, by He Qi, Today we remember the Baptism of Jesus. The Epiphany season celebrates the revealing of Christ. Traditionally, it marks three events: the visit of the magi, the baptism of Christ, and his first miracle Jesus transforming water into wine at Cana. In response to the baptism of Jesus, we renew our own baptismal covenants with our Lord. We recall three elements of our baptism the stripping of all that stands between us and God, the washing in the water that cleanses us and drowns our sin, and being clothed in the garments of righteousness, the new vocation of discipleship. Therefore, today is a call to holiness of life and renewed vocation.

6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship are given to the glory of God by the Nan and Taylor Cole Chapel Endowment. Today s Mission of the Month Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support the Duke chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Duke Habitat is one of the largest and most active student organizations on campus. Habitat s mission is derived from key theological concepts: the necessity of putting faith into action, the economics of Jesus, and the theology of the hammer. Families selected by Habitat work closely with volunteers, investing hours of their own labor, or sweatequity, in building their homes. Because partner families and Duke students do nearly 80% of the work on Habitat homes, a Duke Chapter house fosters close connections between the students of Duke University and the people of Durham. Service of Remembrance for Haiti Earthquake Monday, January 12, marks the five-year anniversary of the Haiti earthquake. Together with the Duke Haiti Lab, Duke Chapel will be hosting a worship service that Monday at 4:30 p.m. Dean Luke Powery will preach and members of the Chapel Choir will sing. In addition, a remembrance book will be in the Chapel begining on Friday where people may write words of solace and condolence to the people of Haiti. Chapel Staff Announcement Andrew Klumpp, the Chapel s visitor relation sspecialist, has returned to his alma mater, Northwestern College in Iowa, for an adjunct teaching opportunity. This semester, we are pleased to have Taylor Knight, Trinity 14 and former Chapel Scholar, serving as visitor relations specialist until the Chapel nave s closure in May. Martin Luther King, Jr., Service of Celebration Next Sunday at 3:00 p.m., the University is hosting the 2014 Service of Celebration in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in Duke Chapel. The Rev. Dr. William Barber II, President of the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP, will be the keynote speaker. The service will also include the Duke University Jazz Ambassadors and the Collage Dance Company. All are invited to attend. Sounds of Justice and Inclusion The Durham Symphony along with the John Brown Little Big Band, Yolanda Rabun, and the 100 Men in Black Choir will present Sounds of Justice and Inclusion, a concert honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Saturday, January 17, at 8:00 p.m. in Baldwin Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students. Purchase your tickets at tickets.duke.edu. Back Pew Collection Today and January 18, donations of new or gently-used tents, blankets, tarps, hooded sweatshirts, long underwear, socks, and warm gloves will be collected in the back pew. Donations will be distributed by Open Table Ministries to the homeless who live in various wooded areas of Durham. Youth Ski Retreat Youth in grades 6 12 are invited to participate in a ski weekend February at Lake Junaluska Conference Center. Saturday Service Project On Saturday, January 24, volunteers are invited to support Open Table Ministries by participating in the Winter Walk at Solite Park, 4870 Fayetteville Rd., Durham. The walk is intended to increase understanding and support of those who live in the woods in Durham. The 2.5 mile walk begins at 1:00 p.m., while music, food trucks, and a bonfire begin at noon. Women s Ministry Lunch Women are invite to lunch on January 25 at the home of Gretchen Ziegenhals. We will gather at 1:00 p.m. (after church) to enjoy a potluck lunch and fellowship.
