1 Service of Worship Fifth Sunday of Lent April 2, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Jesus Raises Lazarus to Life, by the Jesus MAFA Community, Cameroon In today s Gospel passage, Jesus displays the depths of his human compassion as he weeps for his dead friend Lazarus. He commands the dead man to be raised to life, prefiguring his own death and resurrection. Centuries earlier the prophet Ezekiel was taken to a valley of dry bones and was commanded to prophesy life over what was dead in the house of Israel. Jesus weeps for our human brokenness too, and invites us to allow him to raise what is dead in us to life.

On this Communion Sunday, families with children are invited to sit up front, so they can better observe The Great Thanksgiving. Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive Communion. Wine is used for Communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Today s Guest Preacher Today we are pleased to welcome the Chapel s 2017 Student Preacher, Katie Becker. Hailing from Bellevue, Washington, Katie is a senior studying psychology with a minor in history. She plans to attend law school and practice as an immigration attorney. Katie is a Duke PathWays Chapel Scholar and the moderator of Duke Presbyterian Campus Ministry (PCM+). She also works as a teaching assistant for Psychology 101, is a proud alumna of DukeEngage New York City, and loves singing soprano in the Duke Chorale. Katie is grateful for her mentors, friends, and family, who supported her both during her sermon-writing process and throughout her entire time at Duke. Today s Guest Choir The Duke Amandla Chorus is an African music group that performs traditional music from various countries in Africa in their respective languages. Amandla is a Zulu and Xhosa word that means Power. The chorus seeks to share the rich, diverse and empowering culture of Africa through its music. It uses music as an avenue to teach the Duke community about the multiplexity of African culture, history, and values. Organ Recitals This afternoon at 5:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Parkins will give a recital entitled German Organ Music of Four Centuries. Next Sunday, April 9, at 5:00 p.m., Mr. Christopher Jacobson will continue the Complete Bach Organ Works series with Clavierübung III: The German Organ Mass. Holy Week The Chapel will host daily midday services during Holy Week, including the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday. The Maundy Thursday Eucharist will be at 7:00 p.m. and the Good Friday Tenebrae service at 7:30 p.m. Green and Fair Chapel Day Details of the inaugural Green and Fair Chapel Day are below, and include a free movie screening of Before the Flood, at 8:00 p.m. on April 5, and a Bridge Panel on faith and environmental action at 12:30 p.m. on April 6.
