1 Service of Worship Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost October 15, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning The Golden Calf, from The Nuremberg Chronicle, 1493 In this morning s Old Testament reading, Moses is upon the mountain talking with God. Meanwhile, the Israelites decide to construct and worship an idol of a golden calf. The Lord turns aside from fierce wrath against the people s idolatry only after Moses implores mercy. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the wedding banquet. The king casts a guest without a wedding robe into the outer darkness, and Jesus concludes, For many are called, but few are chosen.

6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers The flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God by the Erlenbach Family Trust. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and checks written to Duke University Chapel will be given to the Chapel s Mission of the Month: Senior PharmAssist. Founded in 1994, Senior PharmAssist (SPA) promotes healthier living for Durham seniors by helping them obtain and better manage needed medications, and by providing health education, Medicare insurance counseling, community referral, and advocacy. SPA s programs especially benefit older adults with limited income who struggle to access the medical care and social services needed to age well in place. SPA participants report significant reductions in hospital stays and emergency department visits, among many positive outcomes. Last year, SPA helped 2,317 neighbors. Blessing of the Animals The Blessing of the Animals worship service will be held this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn. The Rev. Meghan Benson will be preaching and the Durham Children s Choir will be singing. The rain date is October 22. Evensong Tonight This afternoon s service of Choral Evensong will take place at 4 p.m. in Goodson Chapel, Duke Divinity School. Organ Recital This evening at 5:00 p.m. is the first of this year s Organ Recitals. Dr. Kola Owolabi will present an eclectic program of music from the 17th through 20th centuries on the Brombaugh and Flentrop organs. Learn more at chapel.duke.edu/music. Duke Chapel Reads Students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to join the Chapel in reading Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America. The book s author, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, will be preaching at the Chapel in the 11:00 a.m. service on Sunday, January 14, Students interested in joining a reading group should contact the Rev. Joshua Lazard, the Chapel s C. Eric Lincoln Minister for Student Engagement. A discussion open to the public will be held in the Spring semester. Chapel Scholars Commissioning Join the Chapel community during next Sunday s 11:00 a.m. worship service in commissioning undergraduate students as Chapel Scholars. These students seek to hear and respond to God s call for their lives on campus, in Durham, and beyond, through study, counsel, service, artistic expression, and community. Vespers Ensemble Fall Concert In their fall concert, the Duke Vespers Ensemble is led by their new director, Dr. Philip Cave, in a program titled Ancient & Modern at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20. 7 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Christian Education Classes Classes for all ages are offered every Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the lowest level of the Westbrook building. Refreshments and fellowship begin at 9:30 a.m. Classes are: Wee Praise: For children ages 0 3 with parents or caregivers in 0011 Westbrook. Godly Play: For ages 4 through 5th graders in 0050 Langford. Youth Sunday School: For youth in 6 12th grade in 0013 WB. Bible Study on Judges: For adults in 0015 Westbrook. Adult Forum: Guests speakers present on a variety of topics in 0012 Westbrook. Back Pew Collection The Mission and Outreach committee is collecting five-gallon buckets today and next Sunday, October 22, to donate to the Society of St. Andrew. Buckets are used by volunteers to collect donated vegetables from local farms. Clean paint or cat litter buckets are welcome as well as new ones. Donations may be placed on the back pew. Children s Fall Fellowship Young children and their families are invited to enjoy a local farm, feeding animals, and sharing a wagon ride. The annual Children s Fall Fellowship event will be held on Saturday, October 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please contact phyllis.snyder@duke.edu for detailed information. Urban Ministry Dinners Ten volunteers and twenty cooked lasagnas are needed every month to serve our neighbors at Urban Ministries. Saturday Service Project Volunteers are needed on Saturday, October 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.to glean with the Society of Saint Andrew. Participants will gather sweet potatoes which will then be donated to food banks and shelters. All ages are welcome to participate. Please contact the Congregation office for detailed information. Holy Ghost Weenie Roast Youth in 6th 12th grade and their families are invited to a Youth Group classic: the Holy Ghost Weenie Roast, at the Wirzba-Ziegenhals home starting at 5:00 p.m on Sunday, October 29.
