1 Service of Worship Fifth Sunday of Easter April 24, 2016, Page Auditorium Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning St. Peter Preaching, by Masaccio, ca In today s Scripture readings, we see the Apostle Peter reporting to the church in Jerusalem his extraordinary vision from the Lord and the command to lay down distinctions between Jews and Gentiles. Through this Peter points to the reconciling love of Christ and shows how Christians can disagree lovingly. In John s Gospel, Jesus says that those who follow him must be known for their love for one another. This love is unafraid to follow wherever the Lord goes and is a love that encompasses all of creation to the praise and glory of God.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in Page Auditorium by the seats at the front left of the stage, in front of the organ. Immediately following Communion, a service of prayer for healing will be held in the same location. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness with anointing and laying on of hands. All are invited. During the prelude the congregation is asked to remain prayerfully or meditatively silent. The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please utilize the nursery in the Box Office on the second floor of Page. 6 Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God in loving memory of Claudia Moore, by her son, Joshua Bond. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used for the Chapel Development Fund. The Chapel s current focus is to upgrade the Chapel cameras and video capabilities to digital and high definition in order to better serve the thousands of worshipers locally, in Duke Hospital, and around the globe. Today s Guest Preacher Dr. Ellen Davis is Interim Dean of Duke Divinity School and Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and Practical Theology. She is the author of ten books and many articles, and her research interests focus on how biblical interpretation bears on the life of faith communities and their response to urgent public issues, particularly the environmental crisis and interfaith relations. Preaching the Luminous Word, a collection of her sermons and essays, will be published in A lay Episcopalian, she is active as a theological consultant within the Anglican Communion and since 2004 has worked with the Episcopal Church of Sudan to develop theological education, community health, and sustainable agriculture. Chapel Choir Today is the last Sunday for the Chapel Choir before finals and the end of the academic term. If you are a student who is interested in joining the Chapel Choir next semester, please call Vespers Ensemble s New Album The Duke Vespers Ensemble has released a world premiere recording of a grand, 17th century musical setting of the Catholic mass. The recording is part of the group s new album Viva Italia, which was recorded live in concert last spring in the Chapel. Ministry with Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated People For any who, after hearing Rev. Sarah Jobe s sermon on April 10, sensed a calling to ministry with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, there will be a meeting after worship at 12:45 p.m. in the Griffith meeting room in the Bryan Center to explore potential opportunities. 8 The Congregation at Duke University Chapel The following Congregation opportunities are open to all. Sunday Christian Education Classes All Sunday morning classes meet in the lowest level of Duke Divinity School from 9:45 10:45 a.m. New participants are welcome at any time: Wee Praise: Ages 0 3 with parents or caregivers in 0011 Westbrook. Godly Play: Ages 4 through 5th graders in 0050 Langford. Youth Sunday School: For 6th 12th graders in 0013 Westbrook. Adult Forum: Adults will meet for an informative presentation in 0012 Westbrook. Provide A Family Meal Volunteers are needed Tuesday, April 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to provide an evening meal for 4-5 formerly homeless families (17-20 people) at Families Moving Forward. Various volunteers will bring the food, set up for supper, and clean up. Some volunteers will then stay to supervise children s activities (ages 0-5) while the parents attend a mentoring or educational session. To assist with this event, please contact the Congregation office. Women in the Garden All women are invited to celebrate Earth Day by joining the Women s Ministry group for breakfast and a walk in Duke Gardens on Saturday, April 30, at 8:00 a.m. The group will meet at Roney fountain, the large fountain just down the broad path from the parking areas by the Doris Duke Center. Young Adults Dinner All young adults and their families are invited to an evening of fellowship on the first Friday of the month. On Friday, May 6, young adults will gather at Motorco s Parts and Labor, 723 Rigsbee Ave. All are welcome. Book Groups Planned The Congregation is offering two book groups. From May 4 through June 16, discussions will focus on Richard Rohr s Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, and July 13 through August 17 Bryan Stevenson s Just Mercy will be the focus. Two sessions of each book group will be available: one on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and the other on Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Both will meet at Carol Gregg s home.participants are asked to purchase their own books. We celebrate its commitment to provide to the university and the larger community a place for selfeducation and discovery, preserve in perpetuity the accumulated knowledge of people of all cultures and viewpoints, and promote scholarship and the creation of new ideas. In Durham we pray for the people who bring food to us, especially for farmworkers, food service workers, and the people within local ministries who seek to be mindful of the principles of sustainable agriculture.
