3 Page 3 Connect the dots of faith. December 9-10, 2017 Prayer Intentions Please include any of these intentions at your daily 3 PM prayer: For a prayerful Advent season, For a renewal of our commitment to discipleship in Jesus Christ, That we may make our CMA goal this year, And for the intentions in our prayer jars. Let us be known by our praying for each other. Blessing of a Christmas Tree The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its origins are found in the Medieval mystery plays that depicted the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle that symbolized Christ, the Light of the world. According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing. In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas day. Prayer of Blessing Lord our God, we praise you for light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The lights of the tree are illuminated. The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying: May the God of glory fill our hearts with peace and joy, now and forever. Amen. (From the Magnificat Advent Companion) Calling all angels, shepherds, Mary & Joseph, too! We are looking for girls and boys, 1st - 5th grades, to join us for the annual Christmas Pageant to be held at the Christmas Eve 4 PM Mass. We will be having 1 practice on Thursday, December 21, from 6:30-8 PM in the Parish Center. At that time you will receive your costume. Parents, please me at: colettesouliere@yahoo.com. Let me know if your child is interested in being a part of the Christmas Pageant. Just a note: there are no speaking parts - no need to be nervous. 6 Let there be light Welcome Jesus ASAP (Reflection on Mark 1:1-8) As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. So important is the coming of the Messiah that God saw the need to prepare his way by the sending of a messenger in John the Baptist. Even his message seeks to nurture among its hearers the shortest possible way between them and the Messiah, a straight path. Living out our faith: Read the prophets of the Old Testament in view of God preparing a straight path between you and His Son, Jesus. John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The making of straight path points us to the re-establishment of our covenantal relationship with God and His People. We straighten the path through reconciliation, which is achieved through recognition of personal sins (repentance) and receiving God s forgiveness. Living out our faith: Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Advent as a way of preparing your heart for Jesus. One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist as forerunner points us to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. In his humility, he is only willing to recede into the background as Jesus takes center stage. Living out our faith: Ask Jesus to increase in you. Ask him to transform you in his image and likeness. Reading the Gospel of Mark In this liturgical year, we are following Jesus through the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel of Mark is the earliest of the gospels to be written, around 70 AD. Mark seems to respond to the reality of persecution faced by the Christian communities by sharing with them the Good News of Jesus Christ. His gospel would provide meaning to the faithful by living within the framework of the Kingdom of God, where disciples follow only the Christ. Compared to the other three gospels, Mark is the shortest. Mark frequently uses the conjunctive kai (and) and the adverb euthys (immediately, right away). Thus, he gives a sense of urgency in the way he conveys the Good News; it is as if he could not wait to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with its prospective hearers. In Mark, we hear Jesus initially forbidding his disciples to tell others about him. But his revelation comes finally when the centurion cried out at the crucifixion, This was truly the Son of God! (15:39). Mark challenges us to recognize the unity of the life of Jesus - his public ministry, his rejection, his suffering, his death on the cross and his resurrection. This Advent, find the time to encounter Jesus through the Gospel of Mark. - Father Edison Parish Office & Preschool Information Hours: Monday - Thursday: 8:30 AM - 4 PM (lunch time: 12:30 PM - 1 PM) Friday: 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Parish Office Phone: (585) Parish Office Fax: (585) Faith Formation & Preschool: (585) Stay Connected Parish Website: Follow regular updates through our website.
