1 October 6-7, 2018 The Precepts of the Catholic Church The context of our faith as Catholic Christians is the relationship that God offers us through His Son Jesus, and the same relationship that we enter into mediated through the One High Priest, Jesus. From the Catechism, paragraphs 2041ff, The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor: 1. You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor. To observe the Sabbath has two-fold effect: using our God-given freedom, we worship God and sanctify the world. In other words, Sunday reminds us of our task to recognize the holiness of God and sacred work that God has shared with us. From a relational perspective, we nurture your relationship with Jesus by regularly spending time with him. 2. You shall confess your sins at least once a year. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we recognize that our relationship with Jesus entails ongoing conversion and forgiveness - as disciples, we seek to continue making ourselves better. From a relational perspective, we recognize our faults and move on through reconciliation. 3. You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season. The Easter season is so important that it requires a minimum encounter with Jesus. His resurrection is a singular event that has brought defeat to sin and death. From a relational perspective, our life revolves around Jesus; we the Body celebrate the important milestones in the life of Jesus our Head. 4. You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. Our practice of fasting and abstinence shows our mastery over our instincts and desires, our capacity to see and value God the Giver over His gifts. From a relational perspective, we make self-sacrifices for loved ones - we forego some good so that we benefit from more good. 5. You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church. Jesus entrusted us his mission. This is why we exist as his Church: to do his work. From a relational perspective, our love for Jesus leads to love our neighbor. Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Patrick s Catholic Church 115 Maple Avenue, Victor NY (585) Authentic faith, Welcoming and Engaging Adsum! Or, present! in plain English. October is here once more, and so it is census time. Take this time to renew our commitment to our Sunday obligation. Set aside the first fruit of your weekend to God as time to worship, to be fed and be nourished. Help promote a trend of increase in our parish. Reading the Gospel of John This week, please read the eighth chapter. The eighth chapter opens with Jesus encounter with the scribes and Pharisees who brought to him a woman caught committing adultery. They were to stone the woman to death because of her sin. For Jesus, sin and death must not be the end but reconciliation and life that come from acknowledging sin and receiving forgiveness from God. In this chapter, we find Jesus telling us about who he is as the Son of the Father. As the Son, he only identifies with the Father what he says and does. May the family of Jesus guide our families to holiness what we say and do. Get to personally know Jesus through the gospels Be holier today than yesterday. The only and truly sad thing in life is not to become a saint Go, and Make Disciples... We all have had times during our lives of doubts, fear and frustration. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a wonderful opportunity to examine our life in the light of faith, and decide whether this is the time to embrace the Catholic Church. Who may participate in the RCIA? Those who have never been baptized. Those who have been baptized in another Christian denomination but would like to join the Roman Catholic Church. Those who were baptized Catholic but have received little or no instruction and now wish to prepare for Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If you re interested in finding out more, please contact Deacon John Payne at john.payne@dor.org, or call him directly at (585) Bring a friend to Jesus.

3 Page 3 Connect the dots of faith. October 6-7, 2018 Etiquette at Holy Mass You have heard that it was said to your ancestors... But I say to you - Matthew 5:21-22 In Matthew, Jesus used this formula, six times, referring to the Word of God in the Old Testament and superseding it with his own words. Prior to this section, Jesus reminded his disciples that he came not to abolish the law and the prophets but to bring them to fulfillment (Matthew 5:17). At the second part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, we recognize the importance of the Word of God as it is given to us both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Gospel, centered on Jesus, takes primacy among the readings and for this reason we stand at its proclamation. It is important that we have a growing knowledge of the Word of God, which should come from our openness to hear what God has to say to us a sign of ongoing friendship. To get ready for Sunday Mass, prepare yourself during the week. Take the time to read the four readings (a reading per day): the First Reading, the Responsorial Psalm, the Second Reading, and the Gospel. Begin with the Gospel, followed by the First Reading, which sheds light to it (as it prepares us for the Gospel). The Responsorial Psalm also follows the theme set by the Gospel. The Second Reading, because its selection employs continuous reading (picked up from the previous week), its theme may not be connected with the Gospel theme. Allow your prior reflection on the readings keep you focused at the Liturgy of the Word. If there is visual distraction, close your eyes. If there is auditory distraction, open the missalette and follow the readings. More practical tips coming. Thank you for your attention. 6 Let there be light It is not your love that sustains the marriage, but from now on, the marriage that sustains your love. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Reflection on Mark 10:2-16) The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife? They were testing him. He said to them in reply, What did Moses command you? They replied, Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her. But Jesus told them, Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment. With his response on the question concerning divorce, Jesus points us to the hardness of human heart as reason for why Moses wrote this commandment. The law, in biblical understanding, refers to the commandments given by God. Moses permission was due to the hardness of human heart and not given to him as a commandment from God. Living out our faith: Pray that we always have the willingness to allow God penetrate the depths of our heart. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate. Rightly so, Jesus points us to a greater reality, that is, the original plan of God for husband and wife. The inseparability of husband and wife does not depend on them, not even on their love for each other, but from the reality that God joined them. Husbands and wives must be open to marriage as an institution established by God. Anything less than this or deviates from this is not marriage. Jesus does not let his disciples in deception that can come of the hardness of human heart. Living out our faith: As a disciple of Jesus Christ, live according to his word. Allow your word to give way to his. Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. In matter of marriage and family, it is not just about the husband and wife, but also about them being father and mother because of their children. In the time of Jesus, children did not have rights. In insisting to have the children brought to him, Jesus is making us aware that he acknowledges children: they have the capacity to receive and take ownership of the kingdom of God. Children must be reminders to us of the kingdom of God. Living out our faith: When you hear babies and toddlers at Mass crying or making sounds, and when you find yourself distracted, think of Jesus as baby or toddler. Jesus Christ: the Goal and Guide This past Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Anthony offered the first of the monthly Parent Session during Children s Faith Formation. I would like to express my gratitude to parents who took the time to be present and to participate in these gatherings. It is important to recognize the end goal of Faith Formation, that is, the formation of disciples, who encounter Jesus and grow in their relationship with him, precisely as the Church of Jesus.
