Certainly, this study looks at the basic teaching of the Church as to their meaning and origin. But it goes further. It investigates the deeper mystery of the sacraments as illuminated by Sacred Scripture. Examining the rich relationship between the Old and New Testaments, it reveals the sacraments as more than mere earthly rituals. They are incredible powers that come forth from the Body of Christ (CCC 1116). The goal of The Bible and the Sacraments is to understand where the sacraments come from, what they mean, and why they are so important and foundational to our Catholic Faith. Enrichment Series for Adults Small Group Discussion Third Thursday, in the Alcove, 10 AM, We use Wild Goose: Discovering a Deeper Relationship with the Holy Spirit (Available for free through Formed.org) Call Sam Condo at Bible Study A video-guided Bible Study, on the Acts of the Apostles, being held from 10 AM until noon in the Parish Library. A Word of Gratitude to Our Parish On behalf of the volunteers of the Angel Care Ministry of St. Marianne Cope Parish (in Henrietta), I would like to extend our gratitude for your recent donations to our ministry of various baby items. Your generosity, this year was overwhelming, and will be shared with the many mothers referred to us, who are otherwise unable to provide these items on their own. These donations of new and gently used clothing, as well as diapers and other baby products, that we give out in the form of layettes, allows us to utilize 100% of the monetary donations we receive through yours and other generous parish tithes to purchase new portable baby beds to ensure a safe place for baby to sleep. It s a win, win for new moms and their babies. Thank you for once again supporting us! Please contact me if you would like more information regarding our ministry. 6 Let there be light The True Meaning of Love (Reflection on Matthew 22:34-40) Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Once more, Jesus is addressed as teacher, and he allows himself to be addressed as such. This time, the question posed on him, concerns the nature of the entire law and seeks to find one law that has primacy over others. Jesus response would also provide a common thread by which one could understand the meaning of 613 individual laws. Living out our faith: Read the Scriptures daily. In your reflection, address Jesus as teacher, and allow yourself to be taught by him. You shall love the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. The greatest law concerns love, and the primary object of love is God. This love entails the whole person. It is a love that teaches one to love God totally and undividedly. Living out our faith: Prioritize prayer each day. Spend time with God in prayer. Prioritize prayer during the weekend. Love God at Mass, and He will nourish you with His Word and Sacrament. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus responds to the question with an answer that is two-sided. The first side involves love of God, and the other side, the love of neighbor. More, the love of neighbor takes on the same intensity as one loves himself or herself. Thus, the neighbor becomes another self. Living out our faith: Love yourself as you are worthy of the love of God, and love others as God loves them. A Grave Concern After I saw the attendance at Mass on the first weekend of October lower than the average last October, I started to worry. I began asking myself, Where are the people of God? What happened? Why on the Year of the Eucharist that we see less people at Mass? What are people s reasons for missing Mass? Are we missing the intent of the fourth Mass in our parish, that is, to provide another service for those who are too busy during Sunday mornings? and most importantly, for those without valid reason for missing Mass, What could be more important than God out there? I hope my worrying is grounded. After all, is it not natural for parents to be concerned when their children stop eating and do not eat for a long period of time? Is it not the case when this happens that some resort to intravenous feeding just so death is averted? When the soul is not nourished with God s Word and Sacrament, are there other food of substance that it could be fed with? In missing Mass, are we not toying with the soul s possible spiritual death? This year, pray that we get to properly diagnose what is happening, at different levels. A lot of listening and conversation has to happen. Pray that we see the essentials and not be distracted by anything secondary. Let our love for God be the kind of love that He actually demands from us (e.g., Honor the Sabbath. Eat my body; drink my blood.), and not of any make believe love that might be grounded only on false presumptions. Saint Patrick, pray for us. - Father Edison Parish Office & Preschool Information Hours: Monday - Thursday: 8:30 AM - 4 PM (lunch time: 12:30 PM - 1 PM) Friday: 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Parish Office Phone: (585) Parish Office Fax: (585) Faith Formation & Preschool: (585) Stay Connected Parish Website: Follow regular updates through our website.
