Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. O, Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Let our families look up to you for guidance and protection. Saint Joseph, intercede for our fathers so that under their fatherly care we may be led to the love of God the Father. Blessed Virgin Mary, you are the Mother of God and our Mother too. Mary of Nazareth is an epic motion picture on the life of Mary, Mother of Christ, from her childhood through the Resurrection of Jesus. Shot in high definition, it was filmed in Europe with outstanding cinematography, a strong cast, and a majestic music score. Actress Alissa Jung gives a beautiful, compelling, and inspiring portrayal of Mary. The film vividly captures the essence of Mary s profound faith and trust in God amidst the great mysteries that she lived with as the Mother of the Messiah, as well as her compassionate humanity and concern for others, and the deep love that she and Jesus shared for one another. The movie underscores her special role in God s plan for our redemption, her unique relationship with Christ, and the tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his Passion and Death, as well as her serene joy at his Resurrection. This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. It may contain violence indicative of the life and times of the saint or character portrayed. We would recommend Parental Guidance and that parents preview it before watching with children. All resources on Formed.org are available to you for free! Make use of these resources. Grow in faith. Reading the Gospel of John This week, read the eighteenth chapter. In this chapter, we see a development in the initial question of Jesus to would be disciples, What are you looking for? to the soldiers, Whom are you looking for? The soldiers were looking for him. To them, Jesus presents himself as I AM - the divine name. Jesus is God, who is about to suffer, be killed and then rise to new life! It is part of the disciple s journey to give witness to Jesus, the Teacher and Master, in serene times and in times of persecution. Peter failed to give witness to Jesus during the time Jesus was being tried. Peter denied Jesus three times. And so did Judas. The only difference between Peter and Judas is the former allowed himself to be redeemed by the love of Jesus after his resurrection. Let the very words of Jesus introduce you to him. Social Ministry & Outreach because Jesus called us to serve Community Dinner Our parish serves the Community Dinner at the Presbyterian Church every third Saturday of the month. We served over 100 people a warm and nourishing breakfast on December 15. The menu for January 19 is beef stew. The sign up sheet is on the table by the children's alcove. We need food preparers, help with set-up, serving, and clean-up. Donations of personal hygiene products are appreciated. Let us, like Jesus, be bread for the hungry. Stewardship because Jesus gave us gifts to share 2018 Building Fund Update We have made our 2018 goal! 167 donors have raised $80,000. Please know that any donation made to the Building Fund will only be used for this designated purpose. 6 Let there be light... The Family in the History of Salvation. (Reflection on I Samuel 1:20-22) In those days Hannah conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel, since she had asked the LORD for him. The next time her husband Elkanah was going up with the rest of his household to offer the customary sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vows, Hannah did not go, explaining to her husband, Once the child is weaned, I will take him to appear before the LORD and to remain there forever; I will offer him as a perpetual nazirite. Reflecting on the history of salvation, one can say that God has the power and definitely uses His power to make a straight line out of crooked ones. For through a line of earthly kings would come the divine Messiah. The First and the Second Books of Samuel tell of the beginning of the monarchy. We see a movement from the time Israel was overseen by judges (see the Book of Judges) to the time she was ruled by kings. The Israelites asked God through the prophet Samuel for a king (I Sam 8:1-22). The reason? To be like the other nations who were ruled, not by God, but by kings! The Israelites could have reflected more on their demand because God had clearly read their hearts: they have rejected me from ruling over them they have deserted me and served other gods. Thus the two Books of Samuel narrate the establishment of the monarchy, first with Saul and then with David, and the two Books of Kings tell about their successors. In the First Reading, we hear the story of Samuel who would play the important role of the prophet as mediator between God and His people, between God and the king. The birth of Samuel is an extraordinary story. His mother Hannah was a barren woman, like Sarah and Elizabeth. A synchronous look at the stories of these women readies us for something remarkable about the child that they were to bear in their wombs. Isaac would become the grandfather of twelve tribes. Samuel would provide the voice of God as he accompanied Saul and David. And John the Baptist would prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus. In all three stories, the family became the special setting for the unfolding of the history of salvation. It is important to note that Abraham was open to the will of God; he and Sarah were gracious to God. Elkanah and Hannah found themselves offering sacrifice to God, and prayed to God. Zechariah served as priest of the Temple during his time. In these parents, we see not only an openness to God but the willingness to be in relationship with God, persisting even in old age, even when Sarah and Elizabeth have passed their childbearing years. Through their respective sons - Isaac, Samuel and John - God had created dots in time by which the history of salvation would unfold through generations. One commonality among the three sons is that their parents nurtured them to be open to God so that when the time came their divinely delegated task to be fulfilled, they were ready and willing. It is the parents sacred duty to raise children who know about the God who speaks and who know how to listen to Him. It is the children s sacred duty to speak with God in prayer and to listen to God in discernment. The family is made by God for good! Husbands and wives, the love you have for each other not only in good times but also through tough times in your relationship is the most important witness you could give your children. Through you, your children will learn and experience the greater power of God s love and goodness. Be prayerful. Let your children see how you communicate with God every day. Children, listen and learn from your parents. Recognize that through their humanity, God is using them to bring about good for you. Take and keep the good you learn from them, and make that good better. Everyday, take the time to say, I love you, Thank you, and How can I help you? Do not wait for the good to happen. Make the good happen. God bless all fathers, all mothers, and all children with the call to be holy families. - Fr. Edison
