1 October 20-21, 2018 Mass Is Boring. If we are honest to ourselves, we all must have said this statement at least once in our journey of faith. Probably, the first time would be as a child who was taken away from playtime in order to go to Church. It is important that we reflect on this statement and what we mean by it. We need to set our sight on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus which gives the Mass its holy and unique significance. Mass is boring. Probably the Roman soldiers on Calvary felt the same. They themselves wanted to hasten the death of Jesus by breaking his legs. I do not know though if Mary, John and Mary Magdalene felt the same. I cannot even imagine the pain in their hearts because I do not know if I have loved Jesus as much as they have. I hope I never feel bored being with a loved one who is dying. Think of it the death of Jesus is rather unique: he died not for himself, but for our sake. Mass is boring. The world strives to keep offering us something new, claiming its most recent offer is the best. But usually after a year, another new and another best is offered. This is how the world gets our attention, it keeps us waiting for the next. The Mass, on the other hand, offers us the same Word of God, the same Body of Jesus, the same Blood of Jesus. God have made up His mind - to give us whom we ultimately need once and for all. Think of it probably, the world does not really know what to offer us, or worst, the world cannot offer us whom we ultimately need. Mass is boring. In the world of I, me and myself, there is strong tendency to focus on what I actively do, even to show my best, and hopefully, to the point of gaining recognition and praise, or winning a title. But in the face of death, my best is not enough, will never be enough. In the face of death, all I can do is to actively surrender surrender to the love of God. It is this love that offers me words that lead to eternal life. It is this love that prepared the meal where divine life is sacrificed that I may eat of it and drink of it. The Mass reveals this love - unchanging, constant, so subtle. At Mass, I receive love and life again and again. If this is boredom, I want more of it. Mass is boring. Can a child truly detest having a meal with his parents? Probably. It takes wisdom from life experience to value sharing a meal with one s parents, especially a meal that one s mother and father could only prepare. God, help me to grow up in your wisdom. Amen. Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Patrick s Catholic Church 115 Maple Avenue, Victor NY (585) Authentic faith, Welcoming and Engaging Adsum! Or, present! in plain English. October is here once more, and so it is census time. Take this time to renew our commitment to our Sunday obligation. Set aside the first fruit of your weekend to God as time to worship, to be fed and be nourished. Help promote a trend of increase in our parish. Our New Director of Music We warmly welcome Mr. Carl Galland as he joins our parish staff as our new director of music. Carl hails from Texas and has been in the area since 2012 when he started graduate studies at Eastman School of Music, where he is completing Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance and Literature. Carl served as organist and music director at Saint Mary and Saint Mark Roman Catholic Parishes in Holley and Kendall, NY prior to accepting his new post here at Saint Patrick s. He devotes some of his time teaching as instructor and mentor at Eastman Community Music School. He will begin his ministry with us on October 24, Wednesday. Do take the time to welcome him next weekend. Keep him in your prayers, and thank you for accompanying the hiring process with your prayers. Reading the Gospel of John This week, please read the tenth chapter. By Jesus identifying and offering himself as the good shepherd, he makes us aware of our need for good guidance. As the good shepherd, he even was willing to offer his life for the sheep. In faith alone does man is able to truly see his true worth. The relationship between the shepherd and the sheep is manifested in mutual recognition. Jesus knows each of us. And each of us must be able to recognize the voice of Jesus. A sheep discerns the voice of Jesus to navigate the challenges of the world. The voice of Jesus leads us to safety, and ultimately, life eternal. Get to personally know Jesus through the gospels Be holier today than yesterday. The only and truly sad thing in life is not to become a saint

6 Let there be light A disciple is the one who serves like Jesus. (Reflection on Mark 10:35-45) James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.... Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. The way to Jerusalem became a much-needed opportunity for the disciples to learn from Jesus what discipleship truly means. They themselves had initial notions about what following Jesus the Messiah might mean. They thought discipleship was synonymous to prestige, at least, from a worldly perspective. Living out our faith: Having followed Jesus all these years, identify your own misconceptions concerning discipleship. How has Jesus helped you better understand true discipleship? The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared. Jesus radically identifies his disciples with himself. A disciple suffers with Jesus. A disciple is washed and purified in Jesus. To suffer and to be purified are enough for disciples to occupy ourselves with. Living out our faith: Find ultimate prestige in Jesus invitation to be identified with him. To be like Jesus is any Christian s highest honor. You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. To become a true disciple, like Jesus, our Master, we must serve. Serving others means giving one s life for others. Serving others opens and frees ourselves from self-confinement. Living out our faith: Do not wait to be invited to serve. Get involved through our various parish ministries - parish ministries exist as schools where disciples learn and actually serve others. My son claims that, because of science, he does not believe in God anymore. It has become a serious concern for parents in our parish to hear their teens claiming disbelief in God because of science. And parents are seeking ways to help understand their teens who find themselves in this situation. It is helpful for teens to feel that parents listen during this time, and for parents to help teens unpack such claim. When surveys reveal that as early as 12 year old, some kids abandon their faith in God, it is really important to accompany children in this part of their journey. At this age, they could really benefit from hearing from parents their own story of faith, their own struggles and why their conviction to believe in God, in the end. In other words, it would benefit children to hear wisdom, the kind that could only be gained from years of life experience. I encourage parents to check out resources on Formed.org. These resources are available to you for free. Create your personal account using 3KRJJK as access code. Under the tab Study, you will find two series, Hope Undimmed and From Nothing to Cosmos: God and Science each with several videos on the subject matter. And lastly, you may listen to the talks: Science, the Origin of the Universe, and God, Chance or Purpose, and Reaching Out to Today s Culture. I pray that this part of our journey of faith and reason help us grow in our conviction that with these two wings we can get closer to the Truth, and in the process, rediscover how Catholics radically contributed to the advancement of science and the scientific method. - Father Edison
