This YDisciple course takes a meaningful and relevant approach to the essence of prayer, including discussion of how to pray, how to listen, and how to use the wisdom of the Church to help us along. 6 Let there be light... Called to Belong (Reflection on Isaiah 6:1-2a, 3-8) Seraphim were stationed above. They cried one to the other, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory! At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke. Then I said, Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts! Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with it, and said, See, now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Here I am, I said; send me! As previously noted in the stories regarding the call of the prophets, their initial response to God is rejection. In the presence of God, they become aware of their unworthiness, of their sinfulness, in addition of the immensity of the task at hand. God heals this initial rejection by the prophets. God cleanses them. God makes them worthy. In Isaiah, this was beautifully done with the purging of his sins by the angel who touched his tongue with an ember. After the cleansing of his sins, the conversation between God and Isaiah began. God asked whom he could send, and Isaiah offered himself to be sent. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. In the story of the call of the first disciples in Luke, we do not see the theme of rejection as part of the initial encounter, but see the theme of unworthiness played out in the first encounter between Jesus and Peter. Peter, simply as a matter of fact, shared with Jesus the fruitless fishing attempts, but he was willing to cast the nets at Jesus prompting. And it was at the sight of the miraculous catch, that Peter called Jesus, not as Master but as Lord, the latter having usually used in relation to God. To Peter, he is more than just Master, Jesus is God. In the presence of divine, Peter admitted to his sinfulness, of his unworthiness before Jesus, before God. Do not be afraid! Jesus assured Peter. And Jesus gave Peter a share in his mission. From catching fish, Peter would be catching men and women for Jesus, for God. And Peter left his occupation, his boat and nets, and his family to follow Jesus. The call of God, the call of Jesus demand radical response. The radical response appears to sever all ties to one s previous way of life - occupation and family. The radical response binds the one called with God, with Jesus, first and foremost. To let go of one s occupation and one s family means to embrace the mission and the bigger family of God. But all can spiritually sever their ties with occupation and family. The latter is called spiritual poverty or spiritual detachment. The latter allows one to see everything we receive from God as gift, cherished and cared for but not to be own, for after all they belong to God alone. In this short reflection on the call of the prophets and the call of the disciples, important lessons are learned: The call reminds the called that they belong to God who Calls. The called, as they share in the work of the One who Calls, end up reminding others, including their own family, that they too belong to God who Calls. In our parish, pray and work to promote vocations. This means we pray for each other to listen to God. This means we encourage each other to respond to God. Let the important work of promoting vocation, in the end, remind us all that we belong to God. - Father Edison
