1 October 13-14, 2018 Mass Is Boring. If we are honest to ourselves, we all must have said this statement at least once in our journey of faith. Probably, the first time would be as a child who was taken away from playtime in order to go to Church. It is important that we reflect on this statement and what we mean by it. We need to set our sight on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus which gives the Mass its holy and unique significance. Mass is boring. Probably the Roman soldiers on Calvary felt the same. They themselves wanted to hasten the death of Jesus by breaking his legs. I do not know though if Mary, John and Mary Magdalene felt the same. I cannot even imagine the pain in their hearts because I do not know if I have loved Jesus as much as they have. I hope I never feel bored being with a loved one who is dying. Think of it the death of Jesus is rather unique: he died not for himself, but for our sake. Mass is boring. The world strives to keep offering us something new, claiming its most recent offer is the best. But usually after a year, another new and another best is offered. This is how the world gets our attention, it keeps us waiting for the next. The Mass, on the other hand, offers us the same Word of God, the same Body of Jesus, the same Blood of Jesus. God have made up His mind - to give us whom we ultimately need once and for all. Think of it probably, the world does not really know what to offer us, or worst, the world cannot offer us whom we ultimately need. Mass is boring. In the world of I, me and myself, there is strong tendency to focus on what I actively do, even to show my best, and hopefully, to the point of gaining recognition and praise, or winning a title. But in the face of death, my best is not enough, will never be enough. In the face of death, all I can do is to actively surrender surrender to the love of God. It is this love that offers me words that lead to eternal life. It is this love that prepared the meal where divine life is sacrificed that I may eat of it and drink of it. The Mass reveals this love - unchanging, constant, so subtle. At Mass, I receive love and life again and again. If this is boredom, I want more of it. Mass is boring. Can a child truly detest having a meal with his parents? Probably. It takes wisdom from life experience to value sharing a meal with one s parents, especially a meal that one s mother and father could only prepare. God, help me to grow up in your wisdom. Amen. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Patrick s Catholic Church 115 Maple Avenue, Victor NY (585) Authentic faith, Welcoming and Engaging Adsum! Or, present! in plain English. October is here once more, and so it is census time. Take this time to renew our commitment to our Sunday obligation. Set aside the first fruit of your weekend to God as time to worship, to be fed and be nourished. Help promote a trend of increase in our parish. Reading the Gospel of John This week, please read the ninth chapter. The relevance of the ninth chapter of John shines in its importance when we find ourselves struggling with the reality of innocent suffering. In situations like this, it is easy to blame God or it is tempting to forego one s faith in God. Jesus reminds us this situation as any human situation can be the stage for the glory of God to be made manifest. In as much as you physically see, do you consider yourself able to see spiritually? Let the light who is Jesus Christ guide you and show you the way. Let your spiritual sight guide your physical sight. Get to personally know Jesus through the gospels Be holier today than yesterday. The only and truly sad thing in life is not to become a saint Go, and Make Disciples... We all have had times during our lives of doubts, fear and frustration. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a wonderful opportunity to examine our life in the light of faith, and decide whether this is the time to embrace the Catholic Church. Who may participate in the RCIA? Those who have never been baptized. Those who have been baptized in another Christian denomination but would like to join the Roman Catholic Church. Those who were baptized Catholic but have received little or no instruction and now wish to prepare for Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If you re interested in finding out more, please contact Deacon John Payne at john.payne@dor.org, or call him directly at (585) Bring a friend to Jesus.

3 Page 3 Connect the dots of faith. October 13-14, 2018 Etiquette at Holy Mass You have heard that it was said to your ancestors... But I say to you - Matthew 5:21-22 In Matthew, Jesus used this formula, six times, referring to the Word of God in the Old Testament and superseding it with his own words. Prior to this section, Jesus reminded his disciples that he came not to abolish the law and the prophets but to bring them to fulfillment (Matthew 5:17). At the second part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, we recognize the importance of the Word of God as it is given to us both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Gospel, centered on Jesus, takes primacy among the readings and for this reason we stand at its proclamation. It is important that we have a growing knowledge of the Word of God, which should come from our openness to hear what God has to say to us a sign of ongoing friendship. To get ready for Sunday Mass, prepare yourself during the week. Take the time to read the four readings (a reading per day): the First Reading, the Responsorial Psalm, the Second Reading, and the Gospel. Begin with the Gospel, followed by the First Reading, which sheds light to it (as it prepares us for the Gospel). The Responsorial Psalm also follows the theme set by the Gospel. The Second Reading, because its selection employs continuous reading (picked up from the previous week), its theme may not be connected with the Gospel theme. Allow your prior reflection on the readings keep you focused at the Liturgy of the Word. If there is visual distraction, close your eyes. If there is auditory distraction, open the missalette and follow the readings. More practical tips coming. Thank you for your attention. 6 Let there be light The Heart that Belongs to God Is A Generous Heart (Reflection on Mark 10:17-30) Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? To ask for eternal life, one must have seriously pondered on the senselessness of death. To have truly experienced life and love, one must conclude that death simply could not be part of God s original plan. Here, the question as posed reflect the realization that man alone cannot arrive at the answer, and more so, attain the answer for himself and by himself alone. Living out our faith: In journey of faith, pray that you may come to complete disgust with death, and as a consequence, also with godlessness and sin. Jesus answered him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother. He replied and said to him, Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth. Jesus first response is to point the man to the source of all goodness, God! God establishes what is good and what is evil. And not only this, God also establishes the proper attitude towards good to do it, towards evil to avoid it. In Jesus reminding the man of the commandments, he makes known to the man that he can participate in God s goodness in very concrete ways, everyday. Living out our faith: Keep the goodness of God connected with His commandments. Honor God by keeping His commandments. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Can mere observance of the commandments mean that one has genuine and unconditional love for God? No! Observance of the commandments would only make sense when founded on one s relationship with God. To keep the observance of the commandments from being reduced to external show, one s heart must already and completely belong to God. Living out our faith: Nurture a poverty of spirit in you. However much or little you have, always be ready to give it up. Store up the treasure that matters the most - a heart that is generous towards God. Why must I support our 2018 Building Campaign? 1. To acknowledge your discipleship with profound sense of mission. We continue the mission of Jesus and the work of the disciples before us. Our church facilities continue to offer the space needed that we may worship God, build our community, and serve others and one another. 2. To express good stewardship. Each of us is gifted by God. In the measure that we are gifted, we give back to God. However big or small the help you provide, it is help, and it is an expression of our sense of unity and common responsibility. 3. To recognize that our facilities are almost 100 years old. And that they need our tender loving care. The attention we give to our buildings we do also as a gift to future generations of Catholics in the Victor and Farmington areas.
