1 December 8-9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent Saint Patrick s Catholic Church 115 Maple Avenue, Victor NY (585) Authentic faith, Welcoming and Engaging Introit: Second Sunday of Advent O people of Sion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart. - Isaiah 30:19, 30 During the reign of King Hezekiah ( BC), the northern kingdom of Israel had already fallen under the Assyrian empire (722 BC). Desiring to avoid similar fate and to preserve the southern kingdom of Judah, Hezekiah sent emissaries to Egypt seeking to forge an alliance with this other superpower against Assyria. The Lord, speaking through the prophet Isaiah, sought to dissuade the southern kingdom from seeking help either from Egypt or Assyria. Instead, God reminded Judah that she must place her trust and hope in Him alone. The first verses of Isaiah 30 contain searing words from God about the unfaithfulness of Judah for taking action to go to Egypt and seek Egypt s protection without first consulting Him. Speaking through the prophet, God made known to Judah her stubbornness her refusal to hear the truth, even begging prophets to withhold the truth of God from her. On the second half of the chapter, God reveals to Judah His plan. His grace and pardon always await the repentant. That on the last days, Egypt and Assyria will be no more but God and his faithful will remain. With the promise of the Messiah, God makes it clear that He comes to save not through political nor military means but by the restoration or right relationship between Him and His people through mercy and justice. For us, Christians we look up to Jesus to receive God s mercy, and having received God s mercy, we are restored to live in what God has established as justice, once more. Let us double our prayer to God by our singing. The music setting for the entrance antiphons we are currently using during the seasons of Advent and Christmas are found on YouTube, search: Introit CCWatershed playlist. These will also be posted weekly on our parish Facebook page. Saint Cecilia, patroness of musicians, pray for us! An Advent Festival Mark your calendars on Sunday, December 9 at 3 PM, in Church. 3 Page 3 Connect the dots of faith. December 8-9, 2018 Reading the Gospel of John This week, read the sixteenth chapter. Jesus is the revealer of the Trinity - One God in Three Persons. In Jesus, the One God of the Old Testament is made known as God who is Love because of the relationship between the Father (lover) and the Son (beloved), and from them proceeding, the Holy Spirit (shared love). The Father sent the Son, and now, the Son sends us the Holy Spirit. The second half of John is often referred to as the Book of the Hour, when we find Jesus freely undergoing through his passion, death and resurrection. His hour had been planned for eternity by the Father. All the miracles or signs (as John referred to them in his gospel) lead to the hour of Jesus. All miracles pale in comparison to the Paschal Mystery, through which all creation is renewed. Encounter Jesus through the gospels. The first feature film ever on the story of St. Joseph, who was a carpenter, the husband of Mary, and the foster father of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that St. Joseph was a just man and that God gave him the most daunting task ever asked of a man to be the husband of the woman who would give birth to the Messiah and the father and protector of this Holy Family. He would be the man closest to Christ. Starring Tobias Moretti in a manly, appealing performance, we are shown the human, noble, and deeply spiritual aspects of Joseph the carpenter, son of David, servant of God, and loving husband of Mary. He is presented as a man of faith who must grapple greatly with the profound mysteries of the miraculous conception, the Virgin Birth, the Incarnation of the Son of God, and the incredible challenges of protecting and raising Jesus amidst the threats on his life from the moment of his birth and beyond. As Joseph is informed by God's messengers about trusting and following his plan for Christ, the dangerous flight into Egypt to save his child, and finally returning to Nazareth to raise Jesus, this lovely film presents beautiful vignettes of these and other powerful scenes in the life of the young Christ and the Holy Family that are authentic and inspiring. All resources on Formed.org are available to you for free! 6 Let there be light... In Jesus, God will save us from ourselves. (Reflection on Baruch 5:1-9) Up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights; look to the east and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by God. - Baruch 5:5 The Prophet Baruch. The Prophet Baruch is known to be a disciple of and scribe to the Prophet Jeremiah (Jer 32:12, 36:4). In the end, he and Jeremiah were separated: Jeremiah went to exile in Egypt (a painful embodiment of the punishment incurred by Israel because of her infidelity to God), and Baruch joined the exiles in Babylon. His book narrates the pain and trauma of the exile in Babylon, and the Israelites coming to terms with their shortcomings in living their relationship with God. In his book, we encounter the themes of sin and punishment, repentance and deliverance, which takes shape in the promise of return to Jerusalem, the heart of the Promised Land. In the fifth chapter, the Prophet Baruch addresses Jerusalem. She is instructed to lift up her head that she may see her children returning from the east and the west, gathered by God. Jerusalem may have forgotten God but God will never forget Jerusalem. The return is swift, For God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and that the age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God. making it easy for the exiles to find and make their way back home. It is this imagery that we encounter also in this Sunday s Gospel reading from Luke, this time spoken through John the Baptist, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. God does not want to delay His coming into our hearts. He wants the shortest distance between us and Him. When we reflect on the reality of the Incarnation, we find that God will do everything to keep us near Him. God is willing to become a helpless baby boy so that He may experience the love of human arms and tenderness of human kisses. God is willing suffer and die and be buried so that we may experience His accompaniment even in our grave. This new liturgical year, it is good to take the time to reflect about the previous year. What personal habits do I have that tend to create a distance between God and me? Bring these to the Sacrament of Penance. Receive reconciliation with God. Make the distance between God and yourself the shortest. Make your way to God the smoothest. O come, O come, Emmanuel! The average head count of the weekend Masses was 872. This figure surpassed the 2016 October census by 16. Thank you to families in the Faith Formation Program who make it a point to actively participate at Sunday Mass. I thank parents who have had their children baptized and fulfill the promises they made to actively raise their children in the faith. I also acknowledge the teens in the Confirmation Program who make themselves present at Mass, as well as families preparing for First Penance and First Communion. And of course, I thank the mainstays who persevere in the good habit of being nourished in Word and in Sacrament weekly. This new liturgical year, may our desire to walk closer to Jesus, first and foremost, manifest in our recognition of his Real Presence at Mass. May we always desire in our hearts to truly encounter our Lord in the concrete ways that he makes himself present and available to each of us. God bless you! - Fr. Edison
