Certainly, this study looks at the basic teaching of the Church as to their meaning and origin. But it goes further. It investigates the deeper mystery of the sacraments as illuminated by Sacred Scripture. Examining the rich relationship between the Old and New Testaments, it reveals the sacraments as more than mere earthly rituals. They are incredible powers that come forth from the Body of Christ (CCC 1116). The goal of The Bible and the Sacraments is to understand where the sacraments come from, what they mean, and why they are so important and foundational to our Catholic Faith. Understanding and Encountering Persons with Same-Sex Attraction Have you ever struggled to understand and accompany your friends or family members with same-sex attraction? Come and hear Dr. Michael Horne, a nationally renowned speaker and clinical psychologist, explore the pastoral dimensions and demands of the Church s teaching and ministry regarding same-sex attraction. 5 Let there be light Invited, Present and Prepared (Reflection on Matthew 22:1-14) The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. Here is another glimpse into the beautiful mind of God. In this parable, we learn that God, given to us in the image of the king, delights, as concretely shown in his attitude towards his son and the wedding banquet that he prepared for him. Living out our faith: Identify stories in the Scriptures that show God taking delight in His Son Jesus. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. Moreover, the delight of the king was not something that was kept only between him and his son. His delight he intended to share with his servants whom he had invited to the banquet, which now is ready. And so the guests were summoned but they chose not to come. Living out our faith: Go through your day and week. When and how do you to spend time with God? The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' The invitation has its particular context that invitees need to be truly aware of and humbly acknowledge. The context of the invitation is the wedding. Therefore, the way they dress, the way they prepare should be guided by the reality of this wedding. Living out our faith: What good thoughts, words and actions did you have and do today (think of these as your non-fabric baptismal garment) that identify you as Christian Catholic? Continuing Our Reflection... In a new edition of his writings in Russian, Collected Works: Theology of the Liturgy, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI wrote its foreword. His words are powerful and to the point. They are observations on the behavior of people today, applicable even to the Gospel s invited guests who refused to come to the banquet, applicable even to us in Victor and Farmington, when we allow the voice of God get drowned out by the noise of the world, and when we allow spending time with Jesus at Mass gets the least priority among the things we do. Here are his words: In the consciousness of the people of today, the things of God and thus of the liturgy do not appear at all urgent. There is an urgency about every possible thing. But the matter of God does not seem to be urgent. And yet the priority of God whom we have forgotten holds true for everyone. If God is no longer important, the criteria for establishing what is important are displaced. Humans, in putting aside God, submit themselves to the constraints that make them the slave of material forces and thus at odds with their dignity. The words of the parable this Sunday and these words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI do not come to us as coincidence; the better expression is God-incidence. Both Jesus and Benedict invite us to a serious and timely reflection about how we place importance on God and on other things in life. May the choice we made concerning God at Baptism, and may the same choice that we renew every so often keep us from being busy with unnecessary things. May God teach us, His Church, to engage and do only what is essential and good. - Father Edison
