Landscapers say that this knits the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he knit himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News. LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse constantemente. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser bautizado, se teje a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en las aguas del vientre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y recibimos la promesa de la gracia. 4 A Word from Fr. Ray Una Palabra de P. Ray Please be advised that the 2014 CSA pledges were not paid up for the 31 st of December Unfortunately the parish will have to make up the difference from our operating account to the Diocese for $ Also be advised that we are currently in debt to the Diocese for over $300, with interest, and continue to fall deeper in debt by $20, a month. I will be meeting with the Bishop soon to discuss this shortfall in our finances. I am very concerned for the future operation of our ministries and staff if we cannot find other resources besides our regular collection and fundraisers. I am always open to suggestions as to how we can increase revenue, so please don t hesitate to let me or anyone from our Pastoral Council or Finance Committees know if you have ideas. I appreciate any input you may have. I would like to thank the staff and ministries and volunteers for their outstanding participation in making our Holiday preparations for Advent and Christmas. We received many compliments for the new Manger Scene in the Gathering Space, and even more compliments on the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel. Many thanks from the bottom of my heart go out to all of you for your wonderful greeting cards and gifts over the Holidays, and also many thanks go out to you from our supply Priests for your gifts to them as well. It s always nice to be remembered this way during the Holidays, and we are all so humbled by your love and support. This is a good opportunity to gain additional skills and get questions answered concerning their issues. 10 Christian Formation Beth Thompson If you think you would like to become Catholic, or if you would just like to learn about Catholicism, we offer weekly opportunities to learn about the Catholic faith. These informal gatherings for coffee and conversation are held 7:00 pm each Thursday (except major holidays) in Room 5 of the Activity Center. Elementary Registration for 2014/15 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office M-TH 8-4:00 pm - Closed from 12-1:00 pm A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for each child being registered. REQUIREMENTS: Family must be registered at Christ the King Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering When are classes held? Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 6:00 pm SACRAMENTS REQUIREMENTS: (1st Communion, Baptism) Same as for Religious Education Registration plus: Child is in second grade or above Child is enrolled in and attending weekly age-level Religious Education classes on a regular basis Unbaptized children must attend one full year of Religious Education first Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation process that requires the participation of the child and a parent or guardian in monthly sessions. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!
