Abraham is called father in faith by more people on earth than anybody else, numerous as the sands of the seashore or the stars of the heavens. Hebrews tells us it was this foundational faith that led Abraham to obey God s call when he heard it, though he was called to journey to a land he did not know and told he would father a mighty race through a marriage he thought was barren. But Abraham s faith, the author of Hebrews tells us, was his realization of what he hoped for, and the evidence of what he could not see. How often are we, in simple daily events of our own Christian vocation, called to an unfamiliar place or told we are to do something we do not believe we can? How fortunate we are to have Father Abraham as our guide and example! Abraham es llamado padre de la fe por más personas en el mundo que cualquier otro; numerosas como la arena de la playa o las estrellas del cielo. 3 Are You Talking to Me? In today's Gospel Jesus talks about being prepared, using the parable of the servants waiting for their master's return from a wedding. Parables usually have a surprise twist and this one is no exception. Jesus pictures the master coming back at a late hour and finding the servants ready for him. The master is so pleased that he begins to wait on the servants--he serves them a meal. (I can almost hear the disciples saying, "No way!") Peter is a man who is not afraid to speak up or ask a question. That may be one of the reasons Jesus made him the head of the apostles. Perhaps Peter was thinking, "Surely we will be prepared when Jesus comes again. He must be talking about the rest of the people." When he asks Jesus whom the parable is meant for, Jesus ignores him! At least it seems that way at first. Jesus expands on the theme of readiness by describing the servant who took advantage of the master's absence --he will be punished severely. To answer Peter's question, Jesus warns that the servant who knew his duties would be punished more than one who was ignorant of those expectations. Peter and the disciples should have seen themselves as the servants who knew what was expected. That warning is one for us to hear also. We may look down on non-christians or wonder if they will get to heaven. But the Lord doesn't expect as much from those who don't know God. Instead of judging them, we would be better off looking at ourselves. Am I serious about my faith, serious enough to show it in my actions? Has my good example ever brought a non-believer to the Church? If I can see Jesus in someone who doesn't know the Lord, the respect I show that person could draw them to believe. There are examples of this even in your own parish. If you have been in the parish for many years, you could be expected to notice a newcomer more readily. How do you welcome them? Do you get so comfortable with your friends that you don't think about reaching out to a visitor? I think Jesus would expect those of us who feel at home in our church to make an effort to bring new members into our circle. "So how much does Jesus expect of me?" LITURGY CORNER ESQUINA DE LITURGIA August 6-7, th Sunday Ordinary Time As we follow Christ on our faith journey, we reflect: On this journey of faith we are often times challenged to keep a standard of thought and behavior with Christ front and center in our lives. Today s gospel tells of the servants who act one way when the master is present and another when he is gone. This is the true test of us as Christians and Catholics do we behave the same in all circumstances? Do you realize that you are ALWAYS in the presence of God? Do you act the same in all circumstances of your life? Are you prepared to meet God face to face? The virtue of mercy is being highlighted, in a special way, in 2016 by Pope Francis. His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. 6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure noted that the official headgear of the pope, the tiara, has been set aside in favor of the miter. Although Pope Paul VI had a coronation in 1963 to begin his ministry as pope, he later gave his tiara away to the Catholics of the United States as a stimulus to end poverty. He took care to say that he was not abolishing the tradition of coronation, but his successor, Pope John Paul I, decided to have an inauguration to begin his tragically short term. His successors have chosen inauguration as well. Pope John Paul II felt that a return to the coronation custom would be inappropriate since the Church was mourning the sudden death of a man already nicknamed The Laughing Pope. So the end of coronations came about not because Paul VI gave the crown away. There are more than twenty tiaras on hand at the Vatican. One is used every year to crown the famous statue of St. Peter, whose sandaled foot has been eroded to a bright shine by the hands of millions of pilgrims. Today, it is left to the individual pope to decide whether he will begin his formal reign with a coronation or an inauguration. Pope Benedict chose an inauguration, as did Pope Francis. Rev. The Israelites knew when the Passover was coming, and so were not in fear, but had faith and courage, "putting into effect with one accord the divine institution." In this we can see a foretelling of the Eucharist that we celebrate according to Christ's command, "Do this in memory of me." We see that Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob died in faith, although they did not see fulfillment of the promise. We live in hope that our faith will be fulfilled every time we celebrate this sacrament. We too are not to be afraid, but to have hope that our faith will be fulfilled in the coming of Christ. FAITH AND HOPE Our faith consists in hoping for what we do not see. For if we knew what was coming, we would not be hoping, but living in knowledge. We hope in Christ for the coming of the reign of God, the restoration of all things good and wonderful, and our promised salvation. All anxiety can be dispelled in the simple words of Jesus, "Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom." What words could be more encouraging at those times when we wonder if we are being the diligent stewards or the bad stewards of what has been entrusted to us? BAD MANAGEMENT Anyone who has reached the age of work has probably experienced what it is like to work under a bad manager. Perhaps that person just does not know how to encourage productivity in a way that is kind and understanding and not abusive. Perhaps that person is just a bully, causing discouragement and poor morale among workers, so that many quit because they just can't stand it. Perhaps that manager does not know how to manage unproductive and disruptive people in the office, or others who are the office bullies. That steward "begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk." But every manager also has a boss. And here Christ is the Master who will come at an unexpected time, and if he finds the manager not working well and unworthy of trust, he will apply appropriate sanctions. Christ will come at a time when we do not know; we place our faith and our hope in his mercy. But when we doubt ourselves we have those words of Jesus, assuring us that the Father has already given us the kingdom. We need not be afraid. We need only be mindful of Christ's mercy, and conduct ourselves in a way that is kind, gentle, and generous to others. We can indeed have hope. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Hace casi 2000 años, Jesús declaró que los zorros tienen guaridas, y las aves del cielo sus nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde reclinar la cabeza. Lamentablemente en las calles y callejones del mundo este dicho se realiza diariamente en tantos abandonados por la sociedad que viven sin techo ni hogar. Por los años de 1940 el santo jesuita, Alberto Hurtado de Chile quiso darle al Hijo del hombre un lugar donde reclinar su cabeza recogiendo a los niños y a los adultos indigentes. Su ejemplo llamó la atención de otros cristianos que se unieron a sus esfuerzos y así en 1944 fundaron la asociación benéfica Hogar de Cristo. Este hogar se dedica aun todavía a acoger, educar y rehabilitar a los necesitados dándoles las herramientas necesarias para poder depender de si mismos. También vela por sus almas dándoles una formación total de cuerpo, alma y espíritu. En fin, el Hogar de Cristo se dedica a difundir la realidad de los pobres por medio de nuestro llamado bautismal a la responsabilidad que tenemos en darle al Hijo de hombre un lugar para reclinar su cabeza. Pues si sabemos lo que viene, no lo estaríamos esperando, sino sabiendo que es lo que viene. Esperamos en Cristo la llegada del reino de Dios, la restauración de todas las buenas y maravillosas cosas; y nuestra promesa de salvación. Toda la ansiedad puede desaparecer con las simples palabras de Jesús "No temas, rebañito mío, porque tu Padre ha tenido a bien darte el Reino". Que otras palabras podrían dar más ánimos en aquellos momentos cuando nos preguntamos si hemos sido administradores buenos o malos de lo que se nos ha confiado?
