1 The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) November 6, 2016 ~ Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Readings A WORD FROM FR. RAY UNA PALABRA DE PADRE RAY First Reading The King of the world will raise us up to live again forever (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14). Psalm Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full (Psalm 17). Second Reading May the Lord encourage and strengthen your hearts (2 Thessalonians 2:16 3:5). Gospel Those who are deemed worthy of the coming age can no longer die (Luke 20:27-38 [27, 34-38]). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 3:30 pm (New Time) WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am and 7:00 pm An Election Season Prayer Fr. James Martin, SJ, with Michael D'Amico God, I know that I don't have to get angry. I don't have to get worked up. I don't have to get depressed. And I don't have to throw anything at the TV. I just have to use my conscience and vote. So help me remember what Jesus taught in the Gospels, and what our church teaches, especially about the poor, the refugee, the migrant, the sick, the homeless, the unborn, the disabled, the hungry, the elderly and the lonely. Help me remember the "least" among us, and help me ponder in my heart how to cast my vote for the good of all. God, I know that no candidate is perfect, because I'm not perfect either, the last time I checked. So free me of the burden of having to vote for someone who satisfies all my desires for a candidate. My candidate will be imperfect, like me. Help me to be grateful for the ability to vote, because not everyone has that privilege. And when I meet people voting for someone else, help me to take a deep breath and give them the benefit of the doubt, because they are following their consciences, too. Help me remember that even though they sometimes drive me nuts, I don't have to argue with them, I don't have to convince them, I don't have to hate them, And I don't have to demonize them. Then, after the election, help me work for unity. Because I know that's what you want. Amen. My steps have been steadfast in your paths, my feet have not faltered. I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God. -- Psalm 17:5-6a

3 LITURGY CORNER/ESQUINA DE LITURGIA November 5/6, nd Sunday Ordinary Time Today the Sadducees question Jesus about life after death. Stuck in their own beliefs of the afterlife they create an extreme and ridiculous story. We can t argue about eternal life because it is beyond our experience. We must walk by FAITH, in HOPE. This hope will not disappoint. Through our life choices we are in everlasting relationship with God beginning here on earth, into eternity. Do I truly believe in eternal life? Does my life reflect my belief? Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Let Jesus be the Lord and Savior of your life and marriage. Strengthen, renew, and rekindle your marriage sacrament by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on October 7-9 in Tucson AZ. Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today's readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us--both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: "I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God." That same confidence appears in Saint Paul's letter to the Thessalonians. "The Lord is faithful," he testifies; "he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one." In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God's protection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels. ALL TOO REAL Some thinkers laugh at religion, accusing believers of making up the idea of an all-powerful God in heaven just to comfort themselves. The Maccabees story turns that argument to dust. One after another, seven brothers and their mother accept torture and death because of their faith in God. Their religious belief brings not sugary comfort, but excessive cruelty. All the king asks them to do is to eat "forbidden" meat. If the Maccabees could agree that their religious laws are based on made-up fairy tales, then how easy it would be to ignore the Mosaic prohibition against eating pork! The king promises to make the last son rich and happy if he gives in. Instead, the faithful young Israelite holds firm to his religion and endures unspeakable torture. Religious belief, for the Maccabees, is no "opiate," no painkiller. No, they testify to the truth that God is real, and that following the Lord in discipleship can be difficult. CONFIDENCE God is real. With complete faith in God's intimate love and mercy, believers face both joyful and tragic circumstances with confidence. Saint Paul prays for us to know this confidence: "May our Lord... encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word." We join Saint Paul in this prayer, asking the Lord to give us the strength to speak and act rightly. Jesus encourages us at all times. He gives us hope that God's strength in us will grow, making us worthy to live forever in heaven. There, in paradise, we will no longer know death. As Jesus says in our Gospel today, we will be "like angels." Even though our lives on this earth must end, we live in hope. We may not be asked to die as martyrs, like the Maccabees, but every moment of every day, God offers us the very same hope and strength that helped the martyrs remain faithful to the end.

In Ireland, the socalled penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding mixed marriage or sending children beyond the seas for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens. Rev.
