4 A Word from Fr. Ray Una Palabra de P. Ray It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of the first week of December. Pretty soon we will be making final preparations for the Solemnity of the Birth of Jesus. For many this is not so joyful a season considering the economy of our city and the country at large. In the Spirit of giving, as God gave us his only son, it would be wonderful for our parish to bring non-perishable food items for our needy families that depend on our donations. Our food pantry is running out of stock early in the week, and by the time we get to Thursday, we are mostly out of good to give for our outreach program. The 2014 CSA pledge ends on December 31 st. Please be sure to get your pledges in by this time, as any pledges received after that date will be applied to the 2015 pledge year for CSA. Also, if we do not meet our goal, we will be billed for the difference. Here s hoping that all have had a HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY and weekend and that all you sports fans have had your fill of games. Be sure to save some time for Sunday Worship and make attending Mass a priority. It is an obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and a serious offense against the 3 rd Commandant of God in honoring the Day of the Lord. Questions for Sunday December 14, 2014: How do we quench the Holy Spirit? 5: THES Who are the Levites descended from and what is their function in the Jewish Tradition? With much love and gratitude, Fr. Con mucho amor y gratitud, P. Ray ALTAR FLOWERS DONATED BY Guiseppe Lepore In Loving Memory of Edith M. Lepore

8 LITURGY CORNER Liturgy Corner: Nov. 29/30, 2014 Sharing Our Story Through the Seasons Having just focused on the celebration of the Feast of Christ the King last week, we once again find ourselves at the start of a new liturgical year beginning with this first Sunday of the Advent Season. As the cycle of Sundays and celebrations repeats each year we are challenged to grow in our personal and communal faith journeys. We are challenged to deepen our understanding of the what and why we celebrate each year. This is where the concept of story comes into play. Each of us has a personal story and that story begs to be told to others, to be shared. The same holds true for the story of Jesus Christ. It is through the sharing of our stories that true knowledge of self and others comes about. As creatures fascinated with the stories of our own families, family albums, stories of how our parents met and fell in love, how we were born, etc. we bring that fascination to our faith story. When we think of God and Jesus we think of the ultimate LOVE STORY which is the story of our salvation history. Salvation history is told to us through the bible, the scripture stories of the old and new testaments. These bible stories are our family album. This year we will be focusing on sharing the stories of salvation history each liturgical season. We will be inviting everyone, through various parish activities, classes and functions to share a bit more of who they are as individuals and as part of this parish family of Christ the King. We will delve deeper into the concept of story taking a look at a different aspect of Christ s own life story during each liturgical season: ADVENT 2014 STORY OF LONGING LOVE We will join the biblical figures in the Old and New Testaments in our longing for the Messiah through the use of the Jesse Tree and Jesse Tree symbols. CHRISTMAS 2014 STORY OF SELF-EMPTYING LOVE We will speak of the pure and self-emptying love of God who took on human form to become one of us, to ultimately save us. WINTER ORDINARY TIME 2015 STORY OF SERVANT LOVE We will enter into the continuing story of Christ s journey through his ministry and service to others. LENT 2015 STORY OF MERCIFUL LOVE We will move through the season of Lent emersing ourselves in God s merciful love through Jesus. HOLY WEEK 2015 STORY OF SACRIFICIAL LOVE We will enter into the great sacrificial love of Jesus for us through his suffering, death and burial. EASTER 2015 STORY OF REDEEMING-TRIUMPHANT LOVE We will enter into the gift of eternal life given us through the resurrection of Christ from the dead. PENTECOST 2015 through ORDINARY TIME 2015 STORY OF EMPOWERING LOVE Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we will go out into the world in mission, to proclaim the Good News of God s Kingdom and Jesus Christ. ADVENT SEASON 2014 Sharing the story of our faith history, we will trace the lineage of Christ through the Jesse Tree and the Jesse Tree symbols each week. The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1 A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots. It is a way by which to tell the love story of God in salvation history. We all share a common longing for Christ, who is the Light just as the biblical figures of the Old/New Testaments did. The symbols will be represented on the hangings inside the church on the east and west walls. Each week during the Advent season we invite you to read the story associated with the symbols given. By reading and reflecting upon these stories you can come to a better understanding of our faith history, the story of how we came to be. Taking this understanding to a deeper level can help you enter into the spirit of the Advent season and prepare you for the celebration of Christmas day. Perhaps you can read these stories throughout the week taking one each night, as God s own personal bedtime story for you and your family. November 29/30 Week 1: - Apple (Story of Adam & Eve) Genesis 2: 7-9, 15 and Genesis 3: Ark (Story of Noah) Genesis 6: 5-8, Lamb (Story of Abraham & Isaac) Genesis 12: 1-3 and 22: Coat (Story of Joseph) Genesis 37: Burning Bush (Story of Moses) Exodus 3: 1-15 HAPPY ADVENT and HAPPY READING!
