1 The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) December 7, 2014 ~ 2nd Sunday of Advent "SIMBANG GABI" ~ December 14-23, 2014 BACKGROUND: In the Philippines, "Simbang Gabi" is a daily mass/novena just before Christmas, celebrated early in the morning, 4-5am or in the evening 6-7pm. It is also called Misa de Gallo (mass when the cock crows) or Misa de Aguinaldo. This is a very much desired Filipino religious tradition. Back home, families wake up early, attend mass and fill up many churches. After the liturgy, delicious Filipino food and delicacies are served and shared by families. Thus this becomes both a religious and social gathering. ACTIVITIES: In the Las Vegas valley, Simbang Gabi is celebrated in ten different parishes at their regular mass time. The schedule is published in parish bulletins and all parishioners, especially Filipino Catholics, are invited to attend, participate & complete the novena. It is recommended that the Pastor/Associate at the assigned parish presides the liturgy. Other priests are welcome to concelebrate. The readings of the day are read and proclaimed. A simple reception/fellowship takes place after mass. SCHEDULE of Mass/Novena: Dates, Time and Places: 1. Sunday. 4 A Word from Fr. Ray Una Palabra de P. Ray Many thanks go out to the countless volunteers for our annual auction. There are so many names that I would like to include but it would be impossible to name all the names here. You know who you are and we are so fortunate to have you working so hard to make this a success. I d also like to thank our parishioners and friends of Christ the King for supporting this event with their donations of items for baskets auction gifts, and especially for purchasing raffle tickets as well. We will be looking forward to an exciting auction this year with many affordable items and the new surprise, the Chinese Auction. I would like to encourage our parishioners to get involved with our ongoing adult formation through the small church groups. This is a terrific opportunity to Open the Word on a regular basis using the Lectionary Base (the Sunday readings). The small church group offers a safe meeting experience to deepen one s faith and to create an intimate atmosphere for fellowship and sense of belonging to the CTK community. Be sure to consult the bulletin for meeting times and contact information. Please be sure to make your CSA pledges good for We are still behind on our goal, and if we don t reach our goal we will have to make up the difference from our regular collection. Needless to say, we are still behind in our payments to the diocese and adding the CSA shortfall to our present debt would be a tremendous financial burden. Thank you for your continued support of the CSA, and let s try to make our pledges good. Questions for Sunday December 14, 2014: What does St. Paul mean in quenching the Spirit? 1 THES 5:16-24 The Jews sent Priests and Levites to ask St. John the Baptist questions. Who were the Jews that are mentioned St. John s Gospel? JN 1:6-8, With much love and gratitude, Fr. JN 1: 6-8, Con mucho amor y gratitud, P. Ray Small Church Communities; a way of being church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community! Please call Chris at (702)

8 LITURGY CORNER ADVENT Week 2 Jesse Tree Symbols As we continue to share the story of our faith history, this week we trace the lineage of Christ through the Jesse Tree and the Jesse Tree symbols using the following: Harp King David 1Samuel 16: 1-13 Crown King Solomon 1 Kings 3: 1-15 Whale Story of Jonah Jonah 1: 1 3:10 Dove Story of Elisha the Prophet 2 Kings 2: 1-25 Rose Story of Isaiah the Prophet Isaiah 6: 1-13 We encourage you to read one or more of these scriptures during this coming week to get a better understanding not only of the history of our Jewish ancestors but to understand the longing each of these biblical figures had in their own faith lives. Each in their own way sought to live in Godly ways, always longing for the deliverance of Israel and the birth of the promised Messiah. Happy Advent! Treasures from our Traditions Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Have you seen Antiques Roadshow on television? People bring attic treasures to experts for appraisal and possible cash. Catholic attics, or maybe Grandma s wall, often hold a sick call crucifix. It is a curiously bulky crucifix hiding a sliding panel and a secret compartment. Two tiny candles, a squeeze bottle of holy water, a stringy purple mini stole, a tube of prayers, and some cotton balls are all hidden inside. The cross folds up to form a mini altar that can be propped up by a sick person s bed. All that is needed is a priest with the oil of the sick and Holy Communion. Forty years ago, when these crosses enjoyed great popularity, the sacrament of the sick was often an encounter between priest and sick person alone, and often only in a last crisis of illness. Gradually, we are reclaiming the sacrament of anointing from this minimal, hidden expression. It is celebrated more richly and more often, even in the Sunday assembly, at every stage of illness and across a wide range of human suffering. The sick call crucifix is not a tradition, it is a curiosity from another time, but it reminds us of true tradition: we are a people who care for our sick, who accompany them in faith, and who sustain them with an experience of Christ s presence. Rev. Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
