Psalm Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me (Psalm 138). Second Reading Buried with Christ in baptism, we were also raised with him; all our transgressions are forgiven (Colossians 2:12-14). Gospel Jesus speaks of God s sure response to those who pray (Luke 11:1-13). She watched her oldest son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith. Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to Augustine about God. The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to become one of the Church s greatest scholars. Today s readings address the importance of persistent prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke s Gospel, tells his disciples to ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you (Luke 11:9). This is our charge: keep praying. LITURGY CORNER ESQUINA DE LITURGIA July 23/24, 2016, 16 th Sunday Ordinary Time As we follow Christ on our faith journey, we reflect: Prayer we are called to pray daily. We are called to pray, to have a more intimate relationship with God through our personal prayer. The bottom line is not if we get what we pray for or don t it is in the intimacy of the asking, the trust of a child to a parent. The Holy Spirit helps us in our prayer and changes us little by little. We are then transformed and seek only what God desires for us. Has your own prayer life grown beyond reciting memorized prayers and asking for things? Do you believe God hears you and loves you, even if your prayer seems to go unanswered? La oración - estamos llamados a orar diariamente. Estamos llamados a orar, para tener una relación más íntima con Dios a través de nuestra oración personal. El resultado final no es si "conseguimos lo que pedimos" o no... Es la intimidad de pedir, la confianza de un niño a un padre. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda en nuestra oración y nos cambia poco a poco. Y así, somos transforman y buscamos sólo lo que Dios desea para nosotros. Ha crecido tu propia vida de oración más allá de recitar oraciones memorizadas y pidiendo cosas? Crees tú que Dios te escucha y te ama, aunque tu oración parece no tener respuesta? SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT The parish has been blessed by a very generous anonymous donor to facilitate monitors throughout the main Sanctuary of the church. We will no longer need to use missalettes and music books, as all the responses, readings and music will now appear on monitors throughout the Sanctuary. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS FOR THE SICK NEEDED Call Jane in the parish office if you feel called to visit the sick and dying, bringing to them the consolation of the Eucharist. As more and more senior rest homes open in the southwest valley around us, we are receiving more calls for the ministry of communion to families loved ones. All that is needed is a compassionate heart; training will be provided. Tin Can Sunday July 31st Tin Can Sunday is coming up on July 31st. The food supplies you bring will greatly enhance our summer-time food shortages in our pantry for the needy. Remember to bring your canned goods every Sunday, but for Tin Can Sunday, we ask you to bring particularly canned tuna, meat products and peanut butter.

The virtue of mercy is being highlighted, in a special way, in 2016 by Pope Francis. His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. 6 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes when bishops are consecrated, they are not given the care of a diocese as an ordinary. A very old tradition, however, assures that they are invested with a see, a link with a local church. Many hundreds of places around the world were dioceses at one time, but are no longer. In England, for example, some of the historic dioceses such as London, Salisbury, and Manchester ceased to be Catholic at the Reformation and their cathedrals passed to the Church of England. The reestablishment of the Catholic Church in the nineteenth century meant that new dioceses had to be created, such as at Liverpool and Westminster. Similarly, in Scandinavia the ancient Catholic dioceses vanished under Lutheranism. In North Africa, tiny dioceses disappeared under the sands or were swept away by Islam. In the United States, some original dioceses never really developed as population centers, such as the old dioceses of Bardstown, Vincennes, Sault Ste. Marie, or Walla Walla. The tradition of titular sees assures that the ancient churches are always held in prayer, as the bishop celebrates Mass in its memory a few times a year. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today's readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul's letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don't deserve it. In Saint Luke's Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers. UNLESS WE BECOME LIKE CHILDREN Elsewhere in Luke's Gospel Jesus tells us we must become like children to enter the kingdom of God. Today's Gospel gives us a practical example of how to become childlike: ask questions, and expect answers. We need to ask as many questions as the neediest, most inquisitive children we know. Moreover, like babies, we need to expect to be cared for. Jesus models this for us, going so far as to let us call God our own Father. The Our Father prayer that Jesus teaches us asks God for many things: a divine plan for our world, daily sustenance, forgiveness, help, and protection. Jesus invites us to ask for these things over and over again. He promises that God will always listen and honor our prayers. Of course, sometimes babies and children ask for things that aren't in their best interest, like a third candy bar or a real sword. Like children, we can expect to feel disappointed from time to time when it seems that God has refused to answer our prayers. In those moments, we can remember, like Abraham, that we are but "dust and ashes." We can be confident that the "judge of all the world" will act with justice for the good of humanity. MERCY SHOCK It's true that God always answers our prayers, and sometimes in good and grand ways we don't expect. It's also true that God answers prayers we've never uttered. God gives us things we don't even know to ask for. Saint Paul meditates on the very best gift God ever offered us: salvation. Jesus suffered, died for us, and rose from the dead, and we had no idea what he was doing. Without our realizing it, our own sinful debt was bought and paid for by Jesus. That's the shocking thing about mercy: God offers it even when we don't know we need it. God works for our good even if we never say thank you. Sharing in the Eucharist today is the very best way to thank God now. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Por siglos, Latinoamérica ha desarrollado una larga tradición religiosa con mitología espléndida. La palabra religión del verbo latín religere significa atar o enlazar. Su función es unir seres humanos, los unos con los otros, con lazos de caridad y justicia. Una vez enlazados en comunidad, la religión los une al poder divino que rige el universo. Entre las culturas andinas se encuentran mitos religiosos que muestran la importancia de este enlazamiento. Según la mitología Inca el universo esta compuesto por tres mundos: el cielo (Janan pacha), la tierra (Cay pacha) y el bajo tierra (Ucu pacha). Estos tres mundos están unidos por dos grandes serpientes, Yacú-mama (ríos) y Sacha-mama (árboles), símbolos de la fecundidad. Muchos piensan que los mitos son leyendas cuya función es el entretenimiento. En realidad los mitos no son fábulas, son historias que explican la verdad profunda del universo. Nos muestran como unirnos y enlazarnos para vivir una vida fecunda.
