1 The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) March 29, 2015 ~ Palm Sunday of the Lord Come to the Triduum, April 2, 3, 4 The Three Days, this Easter Triduum, is the center, the core of the year for Christians. These are days to save and savor. Adults in the community are invited to plan ahead so that the whole time from Thursday night until the Easter Vigil is free of social engagements, free even of work, free of entertainment, free of meals except for the simplest nourishment. We are asked to fast during Good Friday and to continue fasting, if possible, all through Holy Saturday as strictly as we can, so that we come hungry and full of excitement to the Easter Vigil. We make Good Friday and Holy Saturday free for prayer and reflection and preparation and silence. The church is getting ready. Whether you are young or old, currently active in the parish or not, please set these days aside. All of us should know that our presence for the liturgies is not by invitation. We are all needed here. All of us need this whole community together on its greatest days. On these three days, we gather a number of times with each other. Together we hear some of the church's most beautiful prayers and scriptures and we make some of our finest music. We make plans to take part in the various liturgies and other gatherings of Holy Thursday night, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Above all, come on Saturday night for the Vigil. Special Reminder: Each evening of the Triduum the church doors will be open at 6:40 p.m. You are invited to gather for simple soup on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, served from 5:30 until 6:30 pm in the Community Center. You might prefer not to wear socks or hose on Holy Thursday to ease your participation in the foot washing, to which the whole community is invited. We ask that when entering the church and during our services these sacred days, a spirit of prayer and reverence be observed. 4 A Word from Fr. Ray Una Palabra de P. Ray HAPPY TRIDUUM TO ALL May this Holy Week be filled with inspiration and joy of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here s hoping that this Holy Week will allow you to fully appreciate the great sacrifice of our Lord Jesus through his passion and resurrection. Join us beginning with the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday as we come to a fuller understanding of what it means to be a servant to all. Be sure to attend one of our Good Friday services as well. With much love and gratitude, Fr. Con mucho amor y gratitud, P. Ray PROPHETIC ANOINTING The solemnity of today s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are acknowledged in her prophetic anointing. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 5 O U T R E A C H WHOM DID WE SERVE? March 15 to March Households 81 Adults and 53 Children Hours: Monday to Thursday 10:00 am until noon Located in the Parish Office COLLECTION FOR HOLY THURSDAY Homeless Helpers is a volunteer-based non-profit organization with nearly 20 years of experience working directly with those on the streets in our community. Maureen Morley and her team of volunteers make over 300 sandwiches every week here at Christ the King which the Homeless Helpers then distribute. The various feeding times of the shelters in the homeless corridor don t always serve the needs of the working poor who arrive by bus after those hours. The sandwiches provide that needed meal to them. Your monetary contributions will greatly bless this program. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN FOR ADULTS OFFERED You must go to to register for this workshop which is a mandate for all volunteers in the Roman Catholic Diocese: Christ the King Catholic Community 4925 So. Torrey Pines Drive Wednesday, April 22, :00 pm Estimated length is 3 hours This session will be conducted in English Wheelchair accessible: Yes Easter Surprises for Manna Cupboard! Thank you to all of you who were able to donate to our Outreach Easter program either by making monetary donations after Mass or by bringing foods and candies to our Masses for Manna Cupboard. We are handing out our supplies to the needy and will continue to do so throughout Holy Week, though we are closed on Good Friday.

6 GOOD FRIDAY 2015 Noon Service at CTK For ten plus years we have had the distinct honor of experiencing one of the best worship services of Holy Week: Born For This - A Dramatic Presentation of the Stations of the Cross. This presentation has been directed and produced by Don and Desiree Bowsher. Don and Desiree have asked to take a break from presenting this experience this year. So, on Good Friday April 3, 2015 we will be presenting something different: a worship service entitled Lovelight, A Tenebrae Service by Janet Litherland, produced by special arrangement with contemporary Drama Service, Colorado Springs, Colorado. What is a Tenebrae Service? Tenebrae is Latin for shadows or darkness. In a traditional Tenebrae Service there is a Tenebrae Hearse, a holder for several lit candles. Through scripture and psalms, or shadow readings,,i.e. The Agony in the Garden, Judas' Betrayal, Peter's Denial and so on, we remember Christ's suffering on his journey to the Cross. At the end of each reading a candle is extinguished, slowing diminishing the light within the room. As the light diminishes, the gloomier the room becomes symbolizing the pain and the suffering that lead to Christ's death. After all light is gone, the room is immersed in darkness, one last scripture is read then a loud crashing sound is created to represent the earthquake that took place when Jesus took his last breath or, in some circles, representing the tomb being closed shut. One lit candle, that has been hidden from view, is revealed and placed on the highest holder of the hearse to represent the resurrection of Christ. The congregation leaves in silence, contemplating on the suffering that Christ endured for our salvation. If you would like more information on Tenebrae Services, there's a couple of sources online. Ken Collins website question-39.htm or Catholic Encyclopedia at Our Good Friday Tenebrae Service at CTK will include most of the components that make up a Tenebrae Service, with a few alterations. There will be no formal veneration of the Cross but the church will remain open for an hour after the service for those that would like to venerate the cross. What we need: In order to present this Tenebrae Service to the community we are in need of Readers/Actors, Musicians for a choir, Hospitality Ministers, People to assist in moving chairs before the service and after veneration, and a few people to assist at the Cross during the veneration hour. If you can help in any way please the Director - Christine Kellar at: capricorn171972@yahoo.com or call the office for her cell phone number, as soon as possible. Christine is a member of our Liturgy Committee and has been a vital part of our Music Ministry for many years. She has graciously agreed to take on this project and is looking forward to offering this wonderful spiritual experience to our parish community. We truly thank her! LITURGY CORNER PALM SUNDAY 2015 The Story of God s MERCIFUL LOVE Where Do I Stand? This is the final Sunday before Easter. God s MERCIFUL LOVE is revealed in the account of the Passion of Christ in his suffering and death. That is the story of Jesus Christ. We also hear tidbits of the stories of other people in this Passion. One anoints Christ, another denies knowing him while others accuse Jesus of treason and breaking the Jewish laws. Christ is also proclaimed as the Son of God. Where do you stand in all of this? What is your story at this point in your spiritual journey? Will you deny Christ? Will you acknowledge him in the way you live your life? Will you condemn Christ through your condemnation of others? Will you live and proclaim Christ as the Son of God? Will you die in order to be risen with Christ? This is the time to kneel by the cross, to contemplate where your life is going and how you will be Christ s disciple, in the end. How will you be God s MERCIFUL LOVE in the world from here on out? Second Collection: As a Parish Community, in lieu of our extreme financial situation, we are going to take up a Second Collection after communion each week beginning the first Sunday of May. This collection is OPTIONAL and will go directly to help with the debt reduction. The collection is very important to not only paying down the debt but to the future running of the parish in regards to continuing with a full staff and the programs we currently offer. Good Friday Noon Service - April 3 Just a reminder that this year we will NOT be offering our Stations of the Cross at noon. We will be presenting a special Tenebrae service at church during the noon hour, followed by an optional Veneration of the cross. Please plan on attending and reflecting upon the Passion and Death of Christ. Holy Week Schedule: All services for each of the Holy Week evenings will begin at 7:00 pm. Holy Thursday April 2 This service will include the Washing of the Feet and Eucharistic Procession and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 11:00 pm in the Community Center. Good Friday April 3 The service will include the Liturgy of the Word with the Passion Gospel, Veneration of the Cross, special intercessory prayers and Communion. Easter Vigil April 4 This is a 3 hour service that will include the Vigil of Seven Readings, Baptism of the Elect along with their Confirmation and First Communion. Following the mass a simple reception of cake and punch will be held in the GYM as we celebrate with our Neophytes (Newly Baptized). For those who might not know, Salubong is an Easter ritual that reenacts the meeting of the Risen Christ with his Mother, Mary. Even though scripture does not tell us about this, it is believed that Jesus must have appeared first to his mother, to wipe away her tears and to share the joy of his Resurrection. We invite you to attend this special celebration and procession. It will be a joyous start to your Easter day! Holy Thursday Vigiling Before the Blessed Sacrament Please sign up to vigil before the Blessed Sacrament on Holy Thursday evening. Vigiling begins after the Holy Thursday evening service. Sign up sheets are at the Welcome Center in the Gathering Space.

Please make sure that the person you nominate is willing to accept your nomination. Please have nominations in by Friday, May 22 nd, new members will be chosen by Fr Ray and council in June. A Lenten thought from the Knights of Columbus Love for Lent We can turn our personal sacrifices during the Lenten season into a gift for others. Often we think of the Christmas season as a time for giving and Lent as a time for giving up. The practice of giving and giving up can become our way of shedding light on one another when done in the spirit of personal charity. A gift from the heart is to give up something of one s self while giving up something for Lent can become a form of a self-gift--to God and your neighbor. If you give up that candy bar, a donut with your coffee, or that fast food snack, consider dropping the money saved into the poor box on the wall in CTK s Gathering Area near the Welcome Center. All contributions support the Manna Cupboard Ministry to help feed the needy. Your acts of kindness can be summed up in six words-- Give and receive Love for Lent. Council Knights of Columbus FISH FRY EVERY FRIDAY DURING LENT 4:00 ~ 7:00 pm Community Center Menu: Fried Pollock or Baked Cod, French Fries or Mac n Cheese, Cole Slaw, Freshly Baked Rolls, Lemonade or Coffee and Dessert.
